Lois and Ron Retton are the proud and supportive parents of America’s former sweetheart (Moritz 462). Mary’s parent’s support of athletics began with her first dance class in 1974, a day that would change history forever. A year later, she found her passion; a passion that would change her life. She went to West Virginia University to start her first day of gymnastics. During her first gymnastics class everybody realized that Mary was fit for a gymnast’s life (Moritz 462). A couple years later as Mary progressed up to harder levels because of her talent; Bela Karolyi, who was a Gymnastics coach from Romania, spotted Mary and knew as soon as he saw her that she was going to go far.
