LIVING THINGS AND NON-LIVING THINGS

LIVING THINGS-it is a system capable of eating, excreting, growing , reproducing and responding to external stimuli. While this is a good definition, it encompasses things that are not alive, for instance a car. LIFE-is that property possesed by living things. Life is usually easier to recognize than to define, a living things possesses certain properties that help define what life is.

CHARACTERISTICS OF LIVING AND NON-LIVING THINGS 1. COMPLEX DEFINITION- Living things is composed of one or more cells. 2 KINDS OF CELL 1. UNICELLULAR- It is one celled organisms. 2. MULTI-CELLULAR- organisms composed of many cell. 2.METABOLISM- the sum of all different chemical activities carried out by living things. 2 SETS OF METABOLIC REACTIONS 1. CATABOLISM- all reactions that break own substances. 2. ANABOLISM-all reactions that build up substances 3.RESPONSIVENESS-all living things are able to respond to stimuli in the external environment. STIMULI-it is the change that can cause reactions. 4. GROWTH - during growth a living organism transforms material that is unlike itself into materials that are like it. For example: a persons digests a meal of meat and vegetables and transforms a chemical material into more of himself or herself. 5. REPRODUCTION - living things has the ability to produce copies of itself by the process. 2 KINDS OF REPRODUCTION 1. ASEXUAL REPRODUCTIONS- involves only one parent and the resulting cells are generally to the parent cell. 2. SEXUAL REPRODUCTIONS –Two parents cell contribute to the formulation of a new individual. 6. EVOLUTION – living organisms have the ability to adapt to their environment. 7. ECOLOGY- the study of relationships between organisms and with their environment.

8. GENETIC DEFFINITION- the blue print of life is stored magnetic code written

How can we tell if an organism is alive or not? Is a virus , prion, virod, or a rock a living organism? What is life? Biologist have studied what makes organism alive for many years and have come to the conclusion the there are nine characteristics of life. Each characteristic has a property which applies to how and organism is alive. Life characteristics are as follows: order, metabolism, motility, responsiveness, reproduction, development, heredity, evolution, and adaptation. Life is defined as a characteristic that distinguishes that have signaling and self sustaining processes from those that don’t. If an organism can perform certain functions such as movement, respiration, sensitivity, growth, reproduction, excretion, and nutrition, it is classified as a living organism. Life began from the basic building block of all living things, called cells. All organisms derived from single celled organisms. Cells are the basic building blocks of life and are found in all living things. For example, a group of cells would form a tissue, a group of tissues would form an organ, a group of organs would form an organ system an a group of organ systems would form an organism.…

Scientists offer a list of criteria for a conventional definition of "life". Living things have one or more cells, which are the basic units of life. Living things require energy to maintain homeostasis (internal organization) and to produce other phenomena associated with life. Living things will exhibit growth; in a growing organism, this will be an increase in size in all its parts. Living things will also show adaptation, which is the accommodation of a living organism to its environment. Adaptation is fundamental to evolution, and is determined by heredity. Response to stimuli is also a characteristic of living things, and this response can take many forms. This may be observed by the contraction of a unicellular organism, to more complex reactions involving more or all the senses of higher animals. Finally, reproduction is the last requirement for a…
