Imagine if everyone around you considered you a hero, but in order to become a hero, you had to murder somebody. Not just anybody either, but Captain Torres. A murderer, who has killed many of your people. Given the option, would you kill them? This is the same scenario a Barber faces. In the story “Later and Nothing Else” by Hernando Téllez, the protagonist faces a moral dilemma in which he must decide to either kill, or not kill, Captain Torres. He must weigh the pros and cons of his reputation as a barber, or whether he is willing to commit murder to become a hero. Téllez develops the barber’s character and reveals that his sense of moral integrity, his ability to logically rationalize his dilemma, and his realistic outlook on what can be considered justifiable, are traits that enable him to determine that the use of violence to bring about change is futile.…

The goal of this project was to make, and test four soaps, and two detergents. The purpose of making four different soaps and two detergents was needed in order to decide which one would be best for the environmental group to use in the future that would allow for the safest cleanup of an oil spill while not harming the animals or the environment in the process. It was necessary to test the impact of the four soaps and two detergents by analyzing their different properties based off of their specific characteristics and the wastewater left over from the vacuum filtration procedure. This procedure had to be undertaken in order to confirm which of the soaps and detergents synthesized is most environmentally suitable, and which one would result in the most minimal environmental damage as possible after clean up. Other test that were essential in determining the characteristic and properties of each individual soap and detergent included testing for lather ability, cleaning ability, and solubility. Each soap and detergent was tested for lather ability, solubility and clean- ability, by cleaning dirty lab glass wear by means of mixing a small amount of each soap and detergent in a beaker with water, and creating a lather by the use of a scrub brush. The individual results can be seen in Table 4. The greater the lather, more cleaning ability the soap or detergent was capable of. The test of lather ability was done first by using tap water. The soap will make more bubbles with the soft water than with the hard water, because it reacts with the calcium and magnesium salts to form 'scum', which is insoluble in water when mixed with hard water. This means there is less soap for making bubbles, or for cleaning. The tap water used to test the properties of the soap would most likely be considered hard water more than it would be considered soft which is why the conclusion of the least lather ability meant more cleaning ability. After the…

The definition of a coward is one to show fear, the barber shows he is a coward by being afraid, seconding guessing himself, and showing weakness. When the captain walks into the barber shop he begins to quiver on the spot, therefore showing how fearful his is of the captain. For example “When I recognized him I started to tremble.” The barber without a doubt is showing terror. When you’re brave and courageous you never doubt yourself and stick to your guns, however the barber does not. In other words, when you plan on doing something you should never back down. On the other hand the barber does back down. For instance, “But what would I do with the body? Where would I hide it? I would have to flee…” Here he begins to think about what would happen if he did kill the captain and therefore leading him to not kill. In addition, the barber says “No one deserves to have someone else make the sacrifice of becoming a murderer.” In other words he is trying to say he doesn’t deserve to be the one to kill him and be called a murderer. Finally, the barber gives off vulnerability by thinking of reducing the amount of pain and suffering to the captain. For example, the barber thinks to himself “I'm sure that one solid stroke, one deep incision, would prevent any pain. He wouldn't suffer.” Caring for the enemy and trying to minimize the amount of pain they will have is true acts of a coward. In conclusion being fearful, doubting oneself, and giving off weakness is a sure fire sign of a coward.…

Captain Torres and the barber are both hardworking and considered heroes, however, they have very different beliefs. The two men are both dubbed as heroes in their own perspective. The barber is noted as so to many rebels because, (as said on page 15), he passes on information on the enemy, Captain Torres and the government, in order to gain the upper hand. On the other hand, Captain Torres murders and mutilates many rebels. This in turn, gives him the respect and admiration of many government supporters and officials. Another characteristic they share is that they are very hardworking, especially when it comes to their job. They exhibit this determination in different ways. The barber is precise with the way he shaves a customer’s beard. He consistently sharpens his razor - not only when he does not have a customer, but also during the shave to make sure no pearl of blood is allowed to seep from its pore. (page 15) Just as the barber does, Torres carries out his job as an executioner with the best of his ability. He plays his role as a military officer well, as proven through his actions. Torres went on a long, four day expedition in search of rebels deep in the woods where he caught, and killed multiple people. (page 13) Despite the fact killing was against his morals, he still did his job without any hesitation. Though these two men may be the alike, they still have their differences. One is against the government while the other is for the government. One may go against their government for their own beliefs, which is what the barber did. The barber states his side when saying, “Yes I was secretly a rebel.” (page 14). Captain Torres, however, supports the government fully. He was a well known executioner amongst the rebels as stated on page . The barber and the executioner are zealous and courageous but they each have their own unique outlook.…

When one encounters a crossroads in the journey of life, choosing which way to go is never a simple decision. Often times seeking the correct path encompasses commitment, self-preservation, and free will. In order to seek the suitable path, sometimes these notions must be reflected upon. In the short stories, “The Guest”, by Albert Camus, and “Just Lather, That’s All”, by Hernando Téllez, the aforementioned apprehensions are illustrated by the similar internal dilemma and convictions made by both protagonists, Daru and the Barber. Although Daru and the barber have different sentiments concerning their guest, as hosts, they share the key concurrence of obeying their ethical and moral code.…
