Remember the Titans, directed by Boaz Yakin and produced by Jerry Bruckheimer, centers around the American football team of the newly integrated T.C Williams High School in Alexandria (Virginia), in the early 1970s. The Caucasian head coach of the football team (the Titans) is replaced by an African American coach from North Carolina. Tensions arise when players of different races are forced together on the same football team. Many of these tensions however, are somewhat eased during the two-week training camp. When all the players return, they find the city in turmoil due to the forced de-segregation of schools. As the season progresses, the team’s successes causes the community to accept the changes and become much closer than ever. This film is based on a true story, although events in the film are largely exaggerated, some of these examples being the initiating racial tensions within the team as well as the level of opposition that the team faced.…

Set in 1971 Alexandria, Virginia; High school football is the town's most popular sport. The school board is under a court order to integrate the public schools. In the process of integration, tension amongst individual in school becomes high. This film is a perfect concoction of two elements: a coup of an underdog sports team and a successful assimilation of high school football team in general. The interaction of two coaches, a black and a white, is quite a challenging part. Both Coach Boone and Coach Yoast had struggle to overcome their personal dilemma and worked for the betterment of their team. Although reluctant at first, Yoast accepted the demotion and conspired with Boone to produce a winning team! The sub-story between Gerry Bertier, Titan's white team captain, and Julius Campbell, an aptitude black player is also remarkable. It confirms that strong friendship can be forged despite the racial hatred plaguing the community.…

Many strong speeches are given in the movie Remember the Titans. Two of the best speeches in the whole movie are given by Coach Boone to his football team composed of both black and white players. As the coach, it is his responsibility to do everything in his power to make his team look past this and come together to make the most of their difficult situation. One of the major reasons for this is that diversity is not conceived as an organizational priority. The story of the Titans reminds us about the benefits that diversity can bring to an organization (creativity, innovation, added problem solving etc.). Even though managing diversity and cultural change in general is a painful process to any organization, the benefits it brings usually exceeds the efforts it requires. In order for organizational leaders and managers not to have inaccurate stereotypes and prejudice, a deep knowledge and respect of different cultures is essential. Even though diversity is still an issue today, it is less of a problem than it was before and society is more aware of the importance of treating diverse people fairly. However, the word “fairly” is sometimes misunderstood in our modern society. One of the most important points made in this movie in my opinion is coach Boone explaining coach Yoast the true meaning of treating diversity fairly when coach Yoast supports African American players with special attention: “I may be a mean cuss, but I am the same mean cuss with everybody out there on that football team field. The world don’t give a damn about how sensitive these kids are – especially the young black kids. You ain’t doing these kids a favor by patronizing them. You’re crippling them. You’re crippling them for life.” By this quote, coach Boone explains that treating diverse employees (people in general) fairly doesn’t mean treating them with special attention or support, it means considering them full-time members of the community/organization and equating them to other non-diverse members at all…

In the movie "Remember the Titans," there were major racial difficulties between black and white students. This was during a time when the school had just been integrated to allow blacks into the school and the high school football team. These challenges helped the Titans grow as a team and made them more co-operative and successful. The difficulties of a multiracial team were overcome with the assistance of democratic and authoritarian coaching styles, motivational skills, self-fulfilling prophecy, and the perception of the athletes and coaches. Because of these actions, the Titans were able to defeat the challenges they were faced with as a team and come out superior.…

    Racial Stacking in Football

An explanation as to why racial stacking occurs is the existence of stereotypes in football. A stereotype is an exaggerated generalization of a group that can be both positive and negative. Unfortunately, even in today’s society stereotypes are still prevalent parts of institutions, especially sports. The stereotypes that affect sports can be both positive and negative, and in most cases can be a significant determinant in who excels in their particular sport. In football, African Americans are thought be to be both aggressive and athletic, as Caucasians are viewed as intelligent and hard working individuals. These are some examples of positive stereotypes in football. Some negative stereotypes that can relate to football include African Americans being unintelligent and lazy, as well as Asians being too small to play the game. Although stereotypes are not true statements about groups of people,…

‘Remember the Titans’ is set in Virginia, 1971. It explores numerous forms of racial prejudice and discrimination. The opening scenes, particularly the information regarding a white shopkeeper murdering a black man and not being found guilty, emphasizes one of the main themes of this film- racial discrimination. Another incident in the film that supports this theme is the reactions of the T.C Williams High School football team to the news of a new black coach, receiving the position of head coach of their team. One of the players remarked that he wouldn’t play with those ‘black animals.’ His attitude represents the general attitude within the white members of the town, and the belief that the schools should not be integrated.…

Character development is both films plays a vital role. In Remember the Titans, the relationship formed between Gary and Boone and Julius and Yost symbolizes the White/Black differences coming together and actually forming strong bonds rather of two of the same races. There were also the small supporting roles of characters that helped mix the team like Louie, Rev, and Blue who were the very first players who were able to set color aside as it has nothing to do with neither football nor the quality of a man. In The Great Debaters, the growth of Henry Lowe and the relationship between James Farmer Jr. and his father are crucial to watch. Henry Lowe starts off as a misguided young man who responds to conflicts with walking away and surrounds himself with alcohol and women. By the end of the film Lowe has matured, taken control of his life, and becomes a leader for Henry Farmer Jr. and Samantha Booke. James Farmer Sr. is a…

In the film, Remember the Titans, introduces many different lessons that every individual should learn in their life. One of the most important lessons is racism. In today’s society, some people believe that racism is over, considering that, slaves no longer exist, however, some people believe that racism is still around today. Throughout the entire film, the Conflict Theory played an enormous factor. It is evident that there are two separate groups, blacks against whites, fighting over positions on the team. As Coach Boone is hired as head coach, replacing Bill Yoast, the Caucasian football players become further fearful of losing their positions, while the African Americans become more confident about the ability to gain theirs. Also, in…
