B. Technical Description
1. Background of the Study/ Rationale
Mathematics is a very challenging subject but many find it difficult. It is an important component of the school curriculum; hence math skills are necessary in everyday life. Daily routines such as measuring, telling time and counting money are all based on mathematics. Important as it is, there is a turn-over of high-performing students in math that causes anxiety on the part of educators. Cabatay (2011) attested that mathematics has become a big concern of the educators because of the low understanding level accompanied by discouraging achievements of the students in mathematics. It cannot be denied that most of the prospective college students are unprepared for learning higher mathematics. He further stressed that mathematics is learned because of many reasons. Firstly, the mastery of basic mathematics skills is needed in order to cope with the demands in life. Such demands include being numerically literate, gaining tools for future employment, developing the pre-requisites for further education, and appreciating the relationship between mathematics and technology. Secondly, mathematics is the language of the sciences, and many disciplines depend on this subject as a symbolic means of communication. Thirdly, mathematics education can play an important part in developing student’s general decision-making and problem -solving skills. Fong (2009) opined that students take a multiyear sequence of courses leading to calculus and they often drop out after failing the first course in math. One of the most common weaknesses found in students is in solving word problems or thinking and speaking critically about mathematics concepts. Along with mathematics literacy, mathematics computation fluency has been shown to be an important skill that many students are lacking. According to Jones (2002), Geometry is a wonderful area of mathematics to teach. It is full of interesting problems and surprising theorems. It is open to many different approaches. It has a long history, intimately connected with the development of mathematics. It is an integral part of the cultural experience being a vital component of numerous aspects of life from architecture to design (in all its manifestations). What is more, geometry appeals to the visual, aesthetic and intuitive senses. As a result it can be a topic that captures the interest of students, often those students who may find other areas of mathematics, such as number and algebra, a source of bewilderment and failure rather than excitement and creativity. Teaching geometry well can mean enabling more students to find success in mathematics. These aspects and considerations also tend to make geometry a demanding topic to teach. Teaching geometry well involves knowing how to recognise interesting geometrical problems and theorems, appreciating the history and cultural context of geometry, and understanding the many and varied uses to which geometry is put. It means appreciating what a full and rich geometry education can offer to students when the mathematics curriculum is often dominated by other considerations (the demands of numeracy and algebra in particular).
