Reliving The Past In The Great Gatsby

Reliving the past almost reflects how grandparents talk about how things were better, easier, and more fun when they were younger. F. Scott Fitzgerald shows how some characters will do almost anything to get what they have desired for so long, even though in some cases, they can no longer have it. In the 1920s people went out and had a lot of fun, and in The Great Gatsby characters enjoyed the fun they once had and try to relive it. F. Scott Fitzgerald expresses characters who are still trying to relive what they once had, even though some of them cannot have their pasts back, love and money are happiness to them. There is a lot about love throughout the entire novel but, Fitzgerald mainly focuses on Jay Gatsby’s love for Daisy Buchanan.
Daisy is a good example of this, because when she visits Gatsby and sees his house, and all of the luxurious things he has, she starts to cry when she sees what nice shirts he has because she starts to realize that she could have had love and money instead of just money. On the night before her wedding, she was drunk, and holding a pearl necklace from Tom in one hand, and a love note from Gatsby in the other, and could have chosen to have love over money, and almost chose love until she sobered up and realized that she cared a bit more about money, “…pulled out the string of pearls. ‘Take ’em down-stairs and give ’em back to whoever they belong to. Tell ’em all Daisy’s changed her mind.’ …we locked the door and got her into a cold bath. She wouldn’t let go of the letter. She took it into the tub with her and squeezed it up into a wet ball, and only let me leave it in the soap-dish when she saw that it was coming to pieces like snow. …hooked her back into her dress, and half an hour later, when we walked out of the room, the pearls were around her neck and the incident was over” (Fitzgerald 59-60). F. Scott Fitzgerald shows how there are some people who try their hardest to try reliving their past, even though, they cannot. There are people who know they cannot have what they once had, yet they still continue to try and get back what they once use to have.
