Religoulous( Documentary)
Religulous (documentary)
The 2008 documentary Religulous by Bill Maher, is about religion, of course, but most of it’s about how religion is seen by other people around the world. Bill Maher states his views on religion, although he makes fun of it, we have to understand that everyone has a different opinion and perspective about what religion is to them. I am a catholic and I can’t say I’m devoted to my religion and go to church every Sunday, because I don’t. I was baptized as a baby, went to CCD on Sundays and had my first communion and my confirmation where I accepted the religion I was choosing when I was baptized. After that I been a handful of times to church, but I don’t do it every Sunday as many people do. This documentary opened my eyes to what other people thought about religion, it didn’t change my mind about my religion choice, but it did make me think about why others chose their religion.
The things I found interesting about this documentary are that I got to learn some of the ideas that other cultures and religions go by, I learned that the US is considered a Christian nation which I didn’t know until I saw this, and I heard answer to questions that I never actually paid attention to. There were many topics discussed with people of different religions and each had a different view and response to them that it made me think if what I think about is actually right or wrong. Some topics that were brought out were about the world ending, does God exist, was the Virgin Mary a virgin or not, is there a devil, are gays accepted by god and others more. There were a few questions that were answered that bothered me, not because I found them misappropriate, but because the responses were a bit out of reason. For example, the man who used to be gay is against gay people and thinks they are inappropriate now that he is straight. Everyone is free to be who they are and be who they want to be with, but I just found this to be a bit hypocrite from his part

Louis Theroux did a fantastic job on this documentary; I would not change a thing to his presentation of the Phelps family. His approach of staying and interacting with the family created an unspoken aspect of what the family is like and how they regularly act. By tagging along with them in everyday tasks and going to their protests with them it gives the viewers…

Overall, I thought the documentary was very informational and entertaining. It gave me a good look at how apes and humans are so closely related, and after watching it, I realized we are not so different at all. I enjoyed watching this and observing the ways in which they gathered food, went swimming, and interacted with each other; and doing so in similar ways as we humans would do. I’m glad I got a chance to watch this movie, and am glad that I picked this specific one because it gave me a totally new insight on these animals and makes me appreciate them more now, now that I know they are more like humans that I originally…

Overall, I found this film very surprising. I never realized how many Native American achievements that have been overlooked in today’s society. Native Americans have done so much to affect the formation of today’s country that it is astonishing. They have made so many contributions that I had never realized prior to this film. I thought that some of the most important contributions were irrigation techniques and medical procedures. Religion also played a vital role in shaping America today. Native Americans literally were involved in the development of nearly all aspects of America including sports and food. This film is an important one because it shines light on the long forgotten Native Americans. They made contributions in architecture, fishing, schools, industry materials, and government to name a few. I enjoyed the film because it is a celebration of Native Americans cultural contributions. I never realized how much has been overlooked. The film is also effective in disproving countless stereotypes that depict the typical Native American as some sort of savage warrior who is illiterate and misinformed. This could not be more far from the truth and must be corrected. Most of these stereotypes have been shaped by Hollywood television. It’s important to eliminate these stereotypes of Native Americans. Today, I believe that when most people think of an Indian they think of a crazy half naked man screaming through the forest with bows and arrows. This is contrary to the truth that many Indian societies were incredibly civilized and organized. This occurred in many different ways many of which have been incorporated into American life today. In the end, this film was very effective in shining light upon the issue. I think it’s great that this video has become so widespread and I hope that this trend will continue. That way, more people can understand the issue at hand. I cannot believe that some individuals can be so naïve and that…

Is it the actions we take? The fact that we are a different species? This documentary is about formalizing humanity, with all its flaws and virtues. Getting to know what we can achieve, either great or awful. It tries to display the human diversity, one which we rarely interact with, but should learn to accept and be accustomed living with. It criticizes the perception and internal interactions of human beings. Summarizes what there is of humanity and teaches tragedy in an unimaginable manner. Takes you through a heart touching journey that evokes objectivity and an open mind. After watching the film all prejudices are long gone, because suddenly you realize the vastness of identities and ideologies. Confusion is the first thing you encounter at the end, why are we cruel or despicable with each other. Our future really leans to self-destruction, the extinction of humanity? Only time will tell, hoping it will incline to human transcendence. The documentary should be shared and viewed by everyone. It favors the acceptance of one…

Before watching the documentary I didn’t know much about the Koch brothers and how much a couple individuals can impact the rest of us within the United States in such a tremendous way. They are rich people that want to make sure that they are as happy as possible. Not worrying or caring about any other individual, but themselves and their own beliefs. So the Koch brothers will do anything and everything that they are capable of doing to make sure that what they want is the outcome of what we get. This movie gave me a different perspective on those with money and how they’re willing to affect everyone else for their own personal beliefs and profit. The documentary had many strengths from how they adjusted from idea to idea showing all the impacts of each belief the Koch brothers have and all the different impact their beliefs have on us due to the amount of money they process. The film, overall, made me pretty angry that someone with as much money as the Koch brothers have, would care so little about the rest of the population. Polluting other people’s neighborhoods, killing other people’s families, ruining cities, and numerous other aspects of life that have been destroyed by the Koch brothers are all characteristic that affect a tremendous amount of people. It proved to me how false someone could be about what is being said and exactly what they mean by what they are saying. After watching this documentary it forced me to feel like I need to get more involved and speak my beliefs more so the near future is not ran by bias opinions towards a group of people especially the working…

I believe the first question that was asked from the director was how they identified themselves racially. There were so many different responses, but most of the minority did not identify themselves as "Americans." What was surprising to me was that most of the men there were born in the United States so they are American Citizens. Yet, they still felt alienated from this country. I believe that the minority in this country will always be viewed as a foreigner because White Americans are the dominant culture in this society. For example, I am an American Citizen because I was conceived here in the bay area. Yet, people will ask me what country I am from. Furthermore, I was astonished of how important it is to grow up in a diverse committee such as the bay area. When I was living in Maryland I went to a school where my peer consisted of only Whites, Africans, and some Koreans. It was such a cultural shock for me because I grew up with such a diverse group of friends. The lunch breaks at school helped illustrate how each ethnicity formed their own clique and kept to themselves. Also, for the first time in my life I was the only "Asian" in my classes. I was viewed as an exotic and foreign creature because they would look at me with such curiosity. I came to the conclusion that their ignorance is due to the fact that they were never…

    Understanding Race

In the beginning of the documentary we were asked a couple of questions what is race and if race existed and before taking this class and watching the movie I would have said yes race does exist because growing up I believed race was what we were not who we are. A lot of people have suffered because of race especially black people because we have never and never will achieve the whiteness per say as everyone else who have come to this country. Overall I like the documentary because I think it has or will open up people eyes and make them realize that there is no validity behind the word race. There were several parts I didn’t like and made me mad because I believe people from different ethnicities’ would not have been mistreated if the European people were not so afraid or felt that they were superior to everyone else..…

This movie also gave out a great deal of information about the Civil Rights struggle in Birmingham. It did a wonderful job of laying out the facts and and events leading up to the church bombing. Unfortunately, it took their deaths to act as the wakeup call to America concerning the racism and Civil Rights movement in the south. The scenes with George Wallace are outrageous, considering that his segregationist policies, in a way, led to the deaths of the girls. The scene where he introduces a black man that he doesn’t even know, as his “best friend” in a lame attempt at repentance, is pitiful in how pathetic he seems to be in trying to clean up his image, after the fact.…

When it comes down to a film or television series that is known as a popular hit, most people may consider something along the lines of a comedy or drama. No one, in my opinion, gives much thought into viewing a film such as a documentary. A person may say or hear the word ‘documentary’ and particular stereotypical views such as elderly-people-sitting-around-on-a-Sunday-afternoon-with-nothing- better-to-do, or the history channel perhaps come to mind. Not many individuals give documentaries a chance, but I would encourage the viewing of the Academy award-winning documentary, Murder on a Sunday Morning, also known as Un Coupable Ideal, directed by the French-film maker Jean-Xavier de Lestrade.…

I thought the film was very thought-provoking and had strong concepts. Whoever named the movie 13th deserves a raise because that is the best title ever imagined. During the movie they follow the timeline of events in history starting in the slave era. They mention how white people intentionally used their rhetoric in literature to turn communities against black people. Whites made them out to look like rapists and a threat to white women. The film Birth of a Nation strengthened this ideology by making the blacks look like cannibals and mongrels. The documentary went on to talk about Jim Crow laws and the KKK. One quote that really stuck out to me was by the beloved MLK Jr, “justice too long delayed is justice denied.” I believe this really sums up the entire movement and is even still apparent today.…

    Rape on the Reservation

Personally, I was shocked by this documentary. It is truly uncomfortable to accept and admit that such horrible things happen in the United States and are constantly ignored by the federal government. I thought it was interesting that traditionally, women are greatly respected in Native American cultures and it would be shunned to hit a woman. However, I can understand how being forced onto a reservation by means of the Trail of Tears might tarnish a culture of people. I think that the anger felt by the original Native Americans who were forced onto reservations was passed down through generations. That anger is numbed by drugs, alcohol, and I think that maybe the only way men feel in control of their lives is through oppressing women. I have always heard about alcoholism and gambling as a problem on Native American reservations but I did not realize the extent of the issues. It is so easy to overlook the issues that are deeply rooted in the United States, and it may be hard recognize and take action somehow against this severe oppression but it needs to be…
