Ocean View

The religious site that I visited is a Christian church called Ocean View, which is located in the Imperial Beach area. I decided to go to this church because one of my closest friends is part of it and she invited me a couple times before but I never went. This time I accepted her invitation to go and it was perfect for my assignment and at the same time to learn something from a different religious service. When we arrived to the place a lady was standing at the door welcoming people and passing out the bulletins for the service. This church was completely different than the church I go to. It was a normal building without any religious images, priest and nuns around. Everybody there was wearing regular clothing so I wasn’t able to tell who was the priest was, or pastor as they call the main person there. My friend introduced me to some of the people that were sitting next to us while we were waiting for the service to start. A man came up to me and introduce him self and welcomed me. He looked surprised to see somebody new in the church so he asked who I was. I introduced my self too and explained to him the reason I was there. Little did I know, he was the pastor of the church, Hugo Campos. He was glad and happy that I chose that church for my assignment and told me that I was welcome to go anytime I like.
The service started with a performance of the band that is formed by the youth group of the church followed by a prayer. The service was offered in Spanish and since in Latin America they celebrate the Children’s day in late April, they were dedicating the service to them and they were having a celebration with food, games and music at the end of it. All of the kids were sitting in front and close to the lady that was giving the speech about Hudson Taylor. Hudson Taylor was a British protestant Christian missionary and founder of the China Inland mission. He wanted to help people in china and wanted the Christian faith taken to the

There are several revelations presented by Paul with greatly differ from those practiced by followers of Judaism. One of this first revelations was that the church should be separate from the synagogue. Paul then states that all people of faith are “children of Abraham,” meaning that any person of any race are children of God, and not just those of Jewish lineage. This also lead to the belief that circumcision, a Jewish belief and practice, was no longer required in order to be a part of the faith. As for Marriage, Paul states that Christians should only marry other Christians, However, they do not have to be of Jewish descent. As for God's warnings and promise to Judaism, these beliefs still hold true. The purpose of the “Church Age” is to spread the gospel of Jesus Christ. Not much is really happening with the nation of Israel during this time. Paul preached that it will not be until after the Church is taken away, or “Ruptured” that God's focus will again be on the nation of Israel.…

The Seventh Day adventists began in 1863 and they try not to eat much meat because of what the bible says about meat causing some to be vegetarian (Sanchez, Gelabert, Bobadilla, Del Valle). When I walked into their church some said “Happy Saturday” to me. Their place of worship felt comfortable and approachable it was painted a nice white color with a high altar and they were benches with books of the songs and copies of the bible. The pastor came to greet me and during the service he announced how happy they were that they had a visitor and everyone welcomed me out…

Anyway, once the service was over I met with Lisa and she began to take me on a tour of Muir’s Chapel. What I saw was amazing. Lisa and I had to pass through the fellowship hall where there were refreshments offered such as coffee, juice, and biscuits with a side of bacon or sausage. This very rarely happens at my church unless it is a special occasion of some sort. I was astonished to find out there were several different refreshments served after each service. Lisa then took on a quick tour of the rest of the church as she needed to readily available to the members if one needed to talk or maybe ask for prayer. So we scurried on to the Contemporary service that was going on in one of the newer parts of the church. I was in this service for only about 15 minutes as this service started at 9:00 A.M., and the Traditional service I attended started at 8:45 A.M. What little I saw was interesting. There was an actual choir at this service, and the choir had a Pop sound, which is closer to what I am used to hearing. At the end of this service Lisa had to leave to attend to some of the members of the church and I had to go to a dedication at my…

When it came down to me finding out where I wanted to do my site visitation for this class, it was actually a lot harder than I thought. I grew up in a household that had Hindu morals and values, however, my parents’ view on religion were quite vague. Growing up we never attended church (temple) and the only time we celebrated any religious holiday is when our grandparents came around. My parents believed in allowing my little sister and I to grow into our own religious beliefs. At first I considered practicing Christianity because most of my friends are Christian and I figured it would give me an opportunity to learn more about them. I ended up attended a service at a Baptist Church called New Birth Baptist Church located in North Miami, but when I sat down to write the paper I had nothing interesting to write about. I started researching different religions and finally came across a Buddhist temple called Wat Buddharangsi.…

My 500 word digital map cosisted of religion Hinduism or more percisely Vedisim, a segment of Hinduisim that revolved primarly around the mythic bersion of Vedas. The existence of Vedas dates back as far as 1500 BCE to 1000 BCE and until 600 BCE they were not codified. In my digital map i interviewed my uncle who had opened up a Temple here in Toronto, in 1979. I questioned him about the challenegs he faced, religious ceremonies that are held, and the items that are most commonly used in these ceremonies. One kep concept from Nye thats connects with my map would be the concept of globalization in contemporary religion. Globalization is primarly about the flows of people, goods information, and ideas across boundaries and continents. Mentioning how my uncle a Sri Lankan native migrated all the way over to Canada to not only build a better life, but exapnd the HIndu culture into a more diverse community. He wanted to share his passion for the traditions and teach the younger generation the importance of believeing in a culture that has existed since time. Another key concept that connects my map with Nye would be rituals. Victor Turner defines rituals as formal behaviour prescribed for occasions not given over to technological routine thats have reference to beliefs in mystical or non-empirical beings or powers. Vedism like so many other cultures have rituals that are performed to, and in cour contemporary world with religion and culture the rituals are perfomred without the distractions of our modern day enhancements. During the interview, i question my unlce of the items he would use during certain rituals, and he told thats especailly for pujas he would have a coconut, whihc is the fruit of god, the lotus flower, which symbolizes the human soul, and residues from their most sacred animal the cow. I mentioned in my map that my uncle was trying to…

Indigenous approaches to sacred things differ from other religions in so many ways that it is, in fact, hard to think of ways that it doesn’t differ. For instance, a main concern of people today is materialistic items. Common religions, such as Christianity, does not discourage the appreciation of material things, as long as these things are not held above God, like an Idol. However, indigenous ways do not allow these non-sacred things to be held as dear. Clothes, nicer homes, new technology, etc. is not something that most indigenous people view as a necessity the way that so many people in today’s world do. It is believed that if it does not glorify their God, then it is expendable as far as they are concerned. With having said that, there are other types of ways that indigenous people’s sacred beliefs are separated from others as well. Like the way they keep record of their experiences, for example. Fisher says, “In most native cultures spiritual lifeways are shared orally and there are no written scriptures. This helps to keep the indigenous sacred ways dynamic and flexible, and the sacred experience more fresh.” That is a striking difference. In Christian beliefs, the Bible is sacred. It is the Holy Scriptures and teachings of our Lord; the absolute guidebook for decisions, beliefs, and actions. However, indigenous people have no such thing in their practices because they want to keep their sacred ways more “flexible.” That is a hard idea to wrap your head around while thinking of people who hold their beliefs and customs to be so sacred. These are just a few of the innumerable examples of indigenous sacred ways differing from other religions.…

Christ the King Baptist Church, that’s the name of the church I recently attended, and although it was a lot different from my own catholic faith, I enjoyed it very much. There were a lot of people in this service; around 35 to 45 people were present. Everyone that was there was dressed semi-formal, casual clothes which were the same thing in the Catholic Church service.…
