Relationship Between Power And Influence

Power and influence tend to have a negative connotation to some people that have perhaps encountered negative situations. Machiavelli suggested for those in power to do whatever it would take to maintain that power, in order to extend that power (McManus, 2006). Additionally, Machiavelli suggested that power has nothing to do with right or wrong, nor the welfare of the people (McManus, 2006). Furthermore, Machiavelli suggests for a leader to do everything in their power to maintain that power, even if that means cheating, manipulation, deceit, and murder (McManus, 2006). Perhaps some individuals such as Machiavelli have given power and influence a negative connotation. Yet, some people view power in a selfish way, with a complete disregard for everyone else. Others use their power and have perhaps hurt people. In some instances, some people will do anything to attain power and influence. Influence can carry a negative connotation as some people have used the power of forceful persuasion, particularly, if that person also has power. Power and influence are not always negative, there are also positive aspects. For instance, if used correctly, power can do good for many people. Power can be the voice of change and improvement if used appropriately. Influence can be life changing for some, while others may be touched by
By taking the time to observe and listen, I would give others the chance to give me feedback on what needs to be done. In this way to acknowledge the existing work culture, before any changes could be implemented. I would work on understanding the group I am working with, the needs, and identify what could be done to improve things. This is how I would use power to change in ways that could be influential, where others would be heard. The goal is total interdependence, where a leader can have mutual trust and mutual commitment (McManus,
