Relationship Between Duncan And Lady Macbeth

Initially, the witches are the cause to leading Macbeth’s actions; although, Lady Macbeth encourages Macbeth to do these terrible actions. Similar to Macbeth’s character, Lady Macbeth becomes very ambitious for Macbeth to have his seat on the throne because she wants to have her throne along with Macbeth. In the footnotes of the play Margaret Kortes explains what Lady Macbeth says, “When you want something passionately, you also want to obtain it by fair means. You would not act dishonestly, yet you would be happy to enjoy ill-gotten gains … You would rather have the crown by doing what you fear to do (the murder) than not have it, despite the actions necessary to obtain it.” (1.5.19-24 Kortes) Prior to the night of Duncan’s arrival Lady Macbeth tells Macbeth, “look like the innocent flower, / But be the serpent under it.” (1.5.72-73) Macbeth is very uncertain that he would kill Duncan in order to be king.
Lady Macbeth knows her husband too well, that Macbeth will need motivation to do something dishonorable to Duncan. That is why Lady Macbeth tells Macbeth to do whatever it takes to be successful, even if it takes unnecessary steps to get there. For the plan to work out, Macbeth needs to show everyone that he is innocent prior and after murdering Duncan; however, Macbeth also needs to be very diligent towards his actions. Throughout the play, Macbeth’s character develops from good to evil drastically, as a result from the negative influence that Lady Macbeth delivers upon him.
