Reflective Essay: Understanding My Writing Style
Before taking this class, I had little to no interest in poetry. One of the reasons is that it was hard for me to understand its language and writing style. Writing for me requires a lot of time, because I need to think about the development of the essay. Although making an outline before writing a draft is helpful, I find it difficult to follow an outline, so I rather do brainstorming and freewriting for my first draft. Frankly, learning about poetry and drama was a challenge, and it change the way I approach any piece of artwork such as song, movie, drama, poem, and any novel in general. The literary elements helps me to further understand the underlying message the art piece. Discussing about the readings with my class was insightful experience, …show more content…
I found that assignment to be the most interesting one, because my greatest challenge is following a strict guideline for writing academic essay. I realize my writing style requires complete surrender to my thought process, otherwise I would always ended becoming overwhelm. In the beginning, it was difficult to comprehend about the poem, because it creates a conflicting images in my mind as compare to the hidden message of the art. However, like many artistic endeavors, it requires literary elements to address different aspects of spectrum. After discussing the poem with my class and rereading it a few times to discover it underlying message, I find it easier to read the poem by its literary elements.
After taking this class, I learned how to appreciate poetry at its own beauty. For instance, in the story Othello by William Shakespeare, it is amazing to learn how one piece of writing could elicit both political and personal confliction of issues such as racism, sexiest, morality, and religious. I used to find it difficult to read his poetry, which is the reason why I avoided reading them. However, this class completely changed my bias against poetry and

All of the works throughout this semester, the topics covered this semester were really educative. All the poems were the most inspiring section for me. The poem “Theme for English B” by Langston Hughes was really good and inspirational. It helps look at people and understand them differently. It shows how the things were like for African American during that time. The other poem was, “Worn Path” by Eudora Welty. The poem is very motivational for everybody, it shows how not quit in every little steps and keep moving ahead in order to success. The poem taught me not give up and work hard to be successful. Both poems were very motivational. Both poem’s theme were clearly could be spotted and gave me operatively to do my work and work hard on…

Honestly, my experience with poetry has had its ups and downs. Until this unit, I had never read a really good poem. I had a less than great attitude coming into this unit. In the past grades, I dreaded anything that involved poetry. The reason I picked the poem “ Baseball “ is because, I really like how the poet, Bill Zavatsky wrote the last couple paragraphs. Also the way Zavatsky changes the tone of the poem flawlessly is astounding. So far this poetry unit has taught me how to not judge a book by it's cover. Over the last couple of years I have, this year I am hoping to change.…

I have learned more in the five weeks of this dual enrollment class than I have in my previous years of both my middle school years and my freshman/sophomore year. My previous years have mostly been just trying to fine tune my acquired skills from elementary and middle school. Although, it has worked I still think that those courses did not allow me to flourish into the experienced writer than I am capable of becoming. The individual and collaborative techniques that professor Belmont has taught us have greatly heightened my skills in…

Throughout this semester I have received a lot of input and criticism on my essays from my TA, my professor and fellow students. This semester I was fortunate to receive quick, fairly reliable, built in feedback. From the feedback that I have received by taking this class I believe that I have become a better writer as it was beneficial for the most part. Feedback that I received from my fellow students was occasionally helpful. It typically varied from week to week. One week I would write a paper and get a ton of markings and criticism on it which was helpful because I was able to see what I did wrong and I would rarely have to get it proof read another time. Other times I would turn in a paper and it would come back with few markings and comments. This felt almost like a waste of time because I knew that I had more mistakes that I did not catch earlier. Because of this I would have to go out of my way and someone else would have to go out of their way to get it proof read again, or I would risk handing in the good copy with mistakes. One thing that I appreciated from peer evaluation days was that was able to see what worked in my paper, what did not and what I need to improve on.…

When the semester began I thought to my knowledge that my writing was that of good quality. Though I had a good basic understanding of the format of an essay or letter I still had a lot to learn. My writing changed in many ways such as learning to eliminate unnecessary wording in my thesis, the use of synonyms, analyzing quotes and writing abstract to concrete thoughts or ideas. This Class not only helped enhance my writing abilities but to also better evaluate the writings of others and forced me to acknowledge the rigorous work of future courses in college.…

I feel the material I have learned in this course has qualified me to have met the WST requirement. When I initially started this course I felt like my writing was about average, not weak, not strong. My ideas about writing were relatively simplified, and my understanding of different writing styles and concepts were quite general. However, throughout each assignment within this course, I felt my writing skill and understanding become significantly stronger.…

Over the course of this year in English, I think my writing process has excelled the most along with my overall writing. In the past, I have used similar techniques to develop a final essay, but, this year, I have begin to rely more heavily on planning out and slowly chipping away at my essays and papers. I believe also that because of this planning the strength of my writing as a whole has grown. Personally, I do not think that I grew in my vocabulary usage. Overall this year, I grew as a writer in ways that I would not have predicted.…

I despised poetry and could never understand what the author was trying to convey. But after the constant multiple choice practice we have in class, I can now confidently analyze poetry. Before taking this course, I thought poetry was not as common in today's world and because of this, I thought it was pointless analysing a “dead” style of writing. But the lesson that really connected everything for me was when we analyzed rap songs. It showed how poetry can transform and even gave me an new appreciation for rap songs. The lesson also really helped me to connect the rhythm and how the punctuation and writing style in the poem affects the overall work. My suggestion is to show this lesson earlier so that it can break the same misconceptions future students may…

The Nature of a person's writing style can sometimes show more about an individual then the words they actually write, the poetic twists in sentence flow or the professional structure of their grammar. Writing styles are as unique as fingerprints and to define them can be as arduous as mastering the skills required to properly form one. In the quest to define my own style I discovered a detail that I have determined encapsulates the style with which I write; I write with passion. When I say I am a passionate writer I don't mean that I love to write but more that my level of personal affection toward the subject I am writing on directly affects the emotional nature I write in. In other words, I write more expressively and artistically the…

According to Jessica Brody “Don’t be afraid to write crap because crap makes a great fertilizer”. Basically, that’s explaining what kind of writer I am, although my writing styles are very crappy, it will allow me to grow into a better writer. I feel that I am at a low standard at writing I don’t do very well. I am not confident with my writing skills at all it’s something I love and loathe, I see myself growing, I do have a lot to work on, I have high expectations for this seminar and, better writing will help me in the future.…

I expect this class to help develop my writing skills. The hardest part about writing is organizing my ideas in a coherent manner in a timed setting. I hope to develop my flow of ideas and get them organized on paper no matter how much time is given. I hope to transform myself from an “insecure” writer to one that is confident and knows exactly what he wants to write down.…

3). Student confidence relies heavily on the instructor’s presence within the lesson. Because of the design of my lesson, the instructor will need to be actively involved in the students’ learning. It is important for the instructor to understand what prior experience the students’ have with poetry. Is this their first encounter? Do they enjoy poetry? Knowing this will help the instructor to better meet the needs of the online learners participating in this lesson. “A pretest of knowledge or a survey of content covered might be a way of gaining information about what students know to date. Gaining knowledge of students’ prior knowledge is a clearly important step in preparing a quality learning experience” (Simonson, Smaldino & Zvacek, 2014, p.…

In addition to my understanding of the theme of this class, I also learned a lot about myself as a writer. I learned that I can take a broad concept, such as the fieldwork research paper, and make it into my own. We were supposed to write about our experiences so far in college and how we (or a particular group) fit in. This assignment helped me realize how easy it is to write about your own experiences. When you are writing about your own story, the writing flows much better.…
