As part of my studies in the MA social Work and Law module I attended Hull Crown Court. During the visit I witnessed three sentencing sessions. In this paper I aim to project a reflective account of my own thoughts and feelings regarding the Crown Court environment and my initial perceptions of the power dynamics of the Court room officials. The profile and demographics of the defendants will be briefed, with the aim of finding links between them. We will then introduce the nature of the offences been heard for sentencing, and the way in which these where addressed in consideration to social work values and ethics.…

Working as a support worker for young adults, among other responsibilities, solely requires maintenance of a safe environment for the young adults to be cared for, while promoting wellbeing. Maintaining a safe environment involves a series of inter-twined activities which include monitoring and reporting the activities of the individuals in care on a day-to-day base. Considering that the activities are carried out by multiple individuals in different placements within the United Kingdom, with different attitudes and operation patterns, the need for regulation to foster uniformity and consistency within all organisations has not been ignored. The National Occupational Standard covers all fields of job roles at diverse levels of responsibility, identifying and expressing the most appropriate and generally acceptable practice in specific fields, bringing…

Throughout the course we learned about different fields of social work, the complications that come with the job, and the different people you will encounter. Thus, changing our thoughts and feelings towards social work. Before taking the class our thoughts about social workers were more or less simple minded. I say this because most of us thought social workers simply deal with children and some consider them “child snatchers”. After getting the opportunity to take the class, we learned there is more to social workers than we thought. Social workers work with different ages, races, religions, and genders. We also learned how social workers work with these different populations (Morales, Sheafor, & Scott, 2010). During class we discussed a…

I aim to practice and rehearse all the counselling skills that I have learnt at the lectures and tutorials for greater learning outcomes and a sense of satisfaction and accomplishment. I plan to reflect and summarize more accurately and effectively as part of my future learning goals. Summarising helps you sum up the main topics that have come up and you are able to assemble scattered feelings and focus on the most relevant issues. And, reflection enables the client to feel that you are trying your best to understand what they are feeling or saying and it helps them to direct their thoughts and also, they are encouraged to continue talking. For a comfortable environment, I would also like to work on gaining the client confidence and building rapport by finding the right approach and right way to address their issues and for this, I will have to thoroughly go through the theories and micro-skills that I’ve studied so far. In short, in order to enhance my social work practice skills, I aim to continuously work towards rectifying my shortcomings, strengthening my strengths and providing quality services to my…

My main concentration right now in my life is my career in Human Services. The education that I am receiving at California State University Dominguez Hills has definitely changed the way I think in regards to people in the society and it has also giving me a background of problems I will run into and what I can do to solve it. I have learned that helping people will never be an easy job and that it can be stressful and frustrating. I will always remember to be patient, respectful, genuine, honest, and maintain myself neutral. My goal is to help as many people as I can and make an impact in their life and get them the help they need. I think it’s important to respect and understand other people point of view especially if they are different than yours. I believe that understanding where our clients come from will help us understand them and get them the help they need. I believe in self-determination and helpers should always remember that it’s our clients decisions what they want in life and we can’t force them to change. Academically, the school system has always provided me the tools so that I could learn, but outside the traditional high school classroom, there is a myriad of opportunities where knowledge can be obtained. The summer before my senior year in high school the opportunity to take classes at the University of Louisville was bequeathed upon me. My parents guided me into possibly taking core content material classes, for example, math or science. However, there was a wide range of classes in which I could partake in, but the ones which caught my attention were in the Sociology department. Although my parents were not thrilled with my decision of taking leisurely courses which were possibly not going to count towards my future major in college, I felt it was the intelligent decision.…

The difficult part was the service users that I worked with had their own diverse values and that is where I experienced some tensions and dilemmas as to what was the right thing to be doing came up. Different people had different views on what creates risk. In my position as a Social Worker it needs the ability to identify and balance values of benefits and harms, taking into consideration where one’s own value base impacts on the decision making and where we can support people to achieve the best outcomes, using professional rather than personal values. However we are guided by the purpose of the organisation we are employed in, as well as the legal and policy parameters of our society. Additionally, it would appear that the focus of social…
