Reflective Essay-Personal Narrative
Letter of Introduction Over the past four years of high school, I have seen growth in my essay, like most anyone would. My weaknesses are and continue to be word choice and syntax, however, it is not as bad as it used to be and I persist to improve on it every essay I write. My strengths encompass a compelling grabber and an effective use of transitions. I still have masses to improve on in my writing, but it has come a long way from what it once was. Each essay is in order of which I wrote them and comprise of at least one essay from each year. This illustrates the improvement over the four years in high school. Each essay has word choice and syntax alterations to aid the essay’s flow as well as more practical uses of transitions, if I failed to use them sufficiently before. For example, when we wrote the College Essay earlier this year I wrote these sentences, “A challenge that can occur is overzealous parents that need calming down and making sure that I stay calm from the parents who are yelling at me. As parents overreact to my decisions, I quickly learned to ignore the hurtful words that were being thrown at me and focused on refereeing the game the way that I was taught.” My revision to these sentences now looks …show more content…
One essay, the Hero Narrative, is from the beginning of the year while my other essay, the Fear Narrative is from the end. These essay’s show my improvement over the freshman year and from freshman year to now. An example sentence from the Fear Narrative is “All the pieces from the game had just jumped out at me from out of nowhere. It had scared me so much that I screamed like a crying baby.” The revision looks like “All the pieces from the game hurdled themselves at me which made me shriek at the top of my lungs because the game startled me so much.” Again, sentence now flows better and displays much

I am improving in revising my own essay. I have also noticed I have improved on analysis where I had trouble with. At the beginning of this quarter I would usually put one sentence or two and now I am getting the hang of analysis. Also, I am improving in Works cited. This time I think I did well in the organization because I put the archetypes in chronological order, but also a repetition of archetypes. For example, good, bad, good, bad because in life there is always obstacles and it is not always going to be good times. Overall, strengths were the length requirement, which I think I exceeded to do more than the minimum requirement that was 4 pages, improving in MLA format, and citing sources. I have improved in grammar and organization. I think I have improved in analysis and also in my analysis conclusion. My weaknesses, I felt were the paragraphs that did not relate back to my thesis and also the shapeshifter paragraph was not…

So, I added even more information about each body paragraph. These essays were very similar in the way I needed to revise them, but I did improve my grade on the Narrative essay substantially by including great descriptive detail within the essay. The next thing that I found, that relates to the first two essays, was my redundancy in the essays. It was not as common in the first two essays, but after some serious comparing I found that the redundant errors resembled the ones in my Argument Essay. In the second to last paragraph of the Argument Essay, I restated the idea that students would be happy to receive free…

Reflective memo- I have decided to revise to of my earlier essays, my literary biography and essay one. I chose these two pieces because I thought that they needed more work to be done on them. When I put my essays in the peer revision discussions, I received suggestions on what I could fix. There were a couple of times where I didn’t change what was suggested and my essays turn out a little worse then I expected them to. Three of the questions that I looked to help me change what was wrong in them.…

If I had to categorize my feelings during orientation, it would be exhausted, uncomfortable, isolated and interested. Thursday was action packed with events; from 6 am to 11pm I was on the move. After the rain soaked scavenger hunt, I was stripped of all the energy & enthusiasm I possessed at the beginning of the day. As a result I fell asleep once my head touched my soft pillow and my body laid on that stone hard “mattress” . In unfamiliar settings and situations I immediately become uncomfortable. Between not being in Philadelphia and not knowing anyone in the group, the uneasy and awkward feelings started to set in throughout the the day. This uncomfortable feeling would later lead to isolation. Everyone was so approachable,…

Thinking of creative ways on how to develop my paper is a strong suit I benefit while taking on a writing assignment. When given a topic to write about, I write down what comes into my head. I do not worry about the word count if the sentences make sense on paper or even punctuation. I write to avoid forget any important points I might have thought of. This method of writing is where my weaknesses show. Sometimes what I wrote makes sense in my head, but not on paper. Other challenges I face with writing assignments are time management and punctuation.…

Over the course of this year in English, I think my writing process has excelled the most along with my overall writing. In the past, I have used similar techniques to develop a final essay, but, this year, I have begin to rely more heavily on planning out and slowly chipping away at my essays and papers. I believe also that because of this planning the strength of my writing as a whole has grown. Personally, I do not think that I grew in my vocabulary usage. Overall this year, I grew as a writer in ways that I would not have predicted.…

My writing has changed a lot in my first-semester essay writing class. I finally took a class that teaches me useful information and how to properly write an essay. Essay Writing overall was a fun experience it was a slow start for me in the beginning but once I was able to get the work done I was fine. There were a lot of positives to taking this class. I started the year struggling to come up with ideas to write about nut now I can brainstorm and put my words down on the paper better than ever. “If I could travel anyplace in the world for free, I would want to go to North Korea. I would love to see what it's like.” I struggled with proper punctuation and the use of commas and such throughout my high school career and I still struggle with it I hope to learn more about it in the near future. “Cars are one of the best inventions ever.” I needed some direction on making my sentences longer with getting to the point at the same time. There's a lot of small things I need to still improve on but I feel like I got a good start with the Essay Writing course. I got a lot of useful feedback from Mrs.Pennings on all my essays like when to use certain words and proper punctuation and some compliments the really…

To begin with, my punctuation has gotten a lot better. I made a lot of errors during the beginning of the year and I am starting to make a lot less. Also, my thesis statements have gotten tremendously better. At the beginning of the year they were really boring. As the year began to progress, the statements got more interesting and creative. My analysis throughout essays have gotten better. I am much better now at determining things like theme, tone, and finding many literary devices. I can also set up my essays better and create smoother transitions. When I find the theme now, I can point it out much easier after learning about it this year and having a better understanding of what it is. When it comes to tone, I understand it so much better now. When we began learning about it I didn’t understand but after we received a chart about different types of tones it helped me so much. When I started English this year, I knew some of the basic literary devices like simile, metaphor, and personification; but with the knowledge I have gained this year, I can use and find things like hyperbole, onomonopea, assonance, and so on.…
