Reflective Essay: My Experience With Standardized Testing

Writing was never my strong suit; I have always been a math person at heart. Standardized testing was even worse for me, all the practice for the essay model made no sense to me so I was never good at following it. I have always felt that all those years of writing FCAT essays never improved my writing in any way. I was never a bad student by any means and always did well in all standardized tests, but I always felt that my writing was always lacking even if I never really had to show it. Even though I excelled in any math given to me, especially on standardized tests. My writing never felt good to me even if I did okay on the standardized tests. It was always a struggle for me to finish on time and completely while most of my friends finished so easily with a lot of time left over. My school was a very competitive environment ever since my mom placed me in the gifted program, so even if I scored above average on tests it never felt good enough compared to how some of the other students were scoring. After being called exemplary and excellent all my life, scoring anything that was not a perfect score made me feel like I was a failure that would not go anywhere in life. Only having to write short 5 paragraph essays makes me realize that I will have to be comfortable with writing much longer pieces of writing. I wish I had the practice that Ajanee had in her school to really practice writing anything above 2 pages. Especially having to use many sources besides the class textbook.
