Reflective Essay: Internal Medicine

My mother, specifically, has always said I was an exceptionally curious child growing up and still continue to be. Like most children, I too had a lot of questions but inquiring about things like culture and philosophy had finally proved to be tiresome for my parents. So, I turned to Science hoping to satiate my unwavering need to know. On one hand, there was Biology and Physics that greatly enthralled me and then there was craftsmanship in calligraphy that I had so carefully managed to develop over the years. However, I chose to stick with Science because it seemed more promising.
As far as choosing Internal Medicine goes, it took me a lot of time to understand why making a diagnosis is as complex as it sounds in books. This is perhaps because it becomes an art when practiced in real life. I saw, during my clinical
I understood how crucial it is to get your message across to someone who needs help. The most difficult and probably one of the few interesting challenges that I experienced was counseling diabetic patients for being compliant with their medications. Furthermore, learning how to counter the arguments that a smoker presents when convincing them to quit brought out the person in me who wants to help people by addressing their utmost concerns.
The decision of getting residency training in USA and work as a doctor of medicine here, has a complex background. I have always been surrounded by the idea that I have to be more than who I am and training in one of the best health care system in the world is going to help me achieve my full potential. This country is full of opportunities for those, who want to explore, who have the potential to achieve and those who believe that even sky is not the limit.
