Reflective Essay: Improving My Writing Skills
Writing for some may seem difficult, but for me it is like second nature. I have always been interested in writing for as long as I can remember. As I grew older my writing style advanced as well. Since I have been in college, I have learned various techniques that have helped me improve my writing skills. The older you get and the wiser you become, the better your writing will be.

I began writing at the very young age of eleven. The first thing I remember writing was a heartfelt song called finished. Even though I was too young to fully understand relationships, I wrote that song as if I had experienced it myself. After I wrote my first song I began to write poetry to express my feelings. Once my mom found out about my writings, I started writing poems for different programs at our church. Throughout the years, I began to enter a variety of poetry contests. In my junior year of high school I wrote a poem about bullying and won first place. Writing is a getaway for me, it always has been and it always will be.

My writing throughout high school was much different than my writing today. My writing today has improved tremendously. At the beginning of this semester, my writing was very standard and simple. I used to write a paragraph as the traditional three to five sentences. My sentence structures

Through Advanced Composition my writing skills have grown immensely. I have become a more vibrant and expressive writer while still being aware of the subtle nuances of grammar and mechanics. I learned how to view writing as a process, rather than just a goal. I wrote a personal memoir about a game of chess I once played with a friend(Benchmark #1). In this paper, I learned how the value of outlining, and listing as part of the writing process. I had to approach a mediocre story with a fresh new perspective.…

In school, we have been required to write many papers on many different subjects, some being timed and others not. Writing has never been something that has come easy to me, especially when put on the spot and told to write a paper in a certain amount of hours. When I write, I like to have time to think and plan my essay. Being able to revise and edit the paper makes it even better than it was before. When I am given the time to plan my essay, the writing has more depth than when I am put on the spot and have no time to think about what will go into my paper.…

My writing process has always been a frustrating one. I like writing, but I don't think I'm very good at it. When I was younger, I loved letting my creative side shine by writing silly stories and pretending I was Stephen King, using words that I didn't even understand. My dad read me Shel Silverstein's books of poems and and drawings. Those books inspired me so much to write and to draw and be creative on a blank sheet of paper.…

Writing is something that has never been easy for me. For most of my life I have tried to avoid it if I can, but of course I can't avoid stuff like school forever. So for the most part all of my writing has been forced upon me. Even with the help of teachers and some helpful hints from the internet, it never got easier. But obviously I have written before and like anyone else who has written before, there must have been some sort of influence. My main influences were the books I have read, my teachers who have helped me throughout the years, my experience, and strangely enough my music.…

Most importantly, things changed when I start to write and the key to success of writing is when one continues to learn and refine gradually to see variations. This, I believe, will lead me as an active writer. It was challenging at a first glance to read, analyse and write your own paper, because writing an idea entails with…

People write for many reasons. Some write to learn about themselves, express themselves, or to educate others. Still others write in an attempt to create a permanent record of thoughts, or to create a fictional world that can be shared with their readers. For the most part, I have written and continue to write in order to get good grades. The focus on different aspects of the writing experience has changed as I have become older.…

Writing is not something that comes natural to me. Writing is a very long and tedious process mainly because I have to collect all my thoughts and try to put them into grammatically correct sentences. I have written many shitty first drafts in the past 17 years of my life. For example, my last English teacher, which I hated with a burning passion, made my class write an essay about a monster. No not a monster like chupacabra but instead a monster in the positive connotation. I wanted to write about my celebrity mom but the girl in front of me picked Beyoncé ahead of time so I had to settle for the next best thing, One direction. One Direction, at the time, was a really big deal to me. I had been a fan since middle school and I pretty much knew everything about their life’s so the…

The only time I ever write is if I am texting on my phone or typing on the computer. When I text on the phone I don’t use good grammar, punctuation, or spelling. The reason I write so improperly on texts is for the speed and my friends usually understand what I am saying without it having to be proper. The typing on the computer I do is usually for school so I do proof read and revise items for mistakes. When I am writing for assignments in school it isn’t free writing that just comes from my mind. I have to do research and put work into the writings which isn’t fun. I like free writing whatever is on my mind. I would like to start writing because it is something new to do. Instead of doing the same old thing when I am bored, I can write. Writing can be relaxing and it can exercise the mind. Hopefully taking an English class in college will urge me start writing and reading more books to further my skills in reading and writing.…

Yes, writing was an escape for me. It was a way to release myself, a form of therapy. I was able to pen my thoughts in the form of poetry, or basic writing. I wrote about dreams and fairy tales. Being adopted and later placed in group homes has placed me in a position to read a lot. When the time permitted, I spent many hours in the library, reading just about anything to keep from returning home. But academic writing is another category.…
