Reflective Essay: How To Improve Coaching Skills
As I am working with 15 – 17 year olds, this age should have a good all round knowledge of their own skills and qualities and understand different ways to improve their performance when delivering coaching sessions. Some of the young people have to be coached through decision making and problem solving skills, for this to happen I have to set SMART targets, aims and objectives for each individual to achieve the best possible outcomes. Also I have to devise problem solving exercises in order to allow young people to make their own decisions and start learning how use their thinking skills.

Some of the young people had to be coached through guided discovery due to needing more support throughout their learning process. I gave them a variety of opportunities to perform sporting sessions and practice what they had to improve and I also provided advice and help whenever it was needed. This question is a never ending discussion, to be a successful coach it takes so much time and effort. Every coach has different personalities, styles, strengths and weaknesses. There are many indicators that can influence how successful a coach can be, these include; personality, experiences, level of qualifications, knowledge, skills, qualities and the reasons behind why people want to coach.

Foxon (2001) stated that sport sessions need to be planned, delivered and evaluated and these three areas make up the coaching process and all coaches need to be aware and include them when structuring their sessions. Coaches have to take into account their own goals and that of others. If sessions are not structured properly it will create bad coaching practice, negative vibes towards the coach, participants that take part in sessions can lose their determination and become discouraged to turn up to sessions and also coaches can create a bad name for themselves (Crisfield et al,
