I not only proved I had the academic integrity by achieving presidents list every semester, but also was invited to join the honor society, Phi Theta Kappa. Knowing I am capable of accomplishing high academic success inspires me to continue my college education. I always wanted to go to college growing up, but because of my family, along with my sisters and myself, were born and raised in a refugee camp in Nepal, I had a feeling that college was a dream that would not come true for me. In 2012, we came to Salt Lake City, Utah. The school I did was from 9th grade. After resettlement in the United States, my parents are still struggling to look after the educational future of me and my sisters. My family said if I could find a way to pay for college. I began to apply for many scholarships, which would help to fulfill my dream and desire.…

Joining the Honors college did not cross my mind for a long time in my research of Appalachian. I did not see myself capable of thriving within a possibly contentious community of highly intelligent people. However, as the deadlines began to tick down and the pressures of school were put on blast, I began to realize that the honors college was my strongest option. Since I was very little, competition and a healthy amount of academic pressure have brought out the best in me. Rather than wilting under the intensity, I rise up ready to face the challenges thrown my way. The honors college will stimulate my growth towards intellectual, personal, and professional achievement utilizing both friendly competition and social proliferation.…

Since a very young age I was being taught who Jesus was, was read bible stories, and have gone to church. As I grew older, I began to truly understand the things I had been taught and developed my own understanding of my Christian faith. I developed relationships with people within my church and youth group that I attended and was comfortable talking with them about my faith. Also, I have helped lead some of my friends whom did not grow up in a Christ centered environment to Christ. As I was starting my college search I decided that a Christian affiliated school is where I wanted to go. I wanted to be in an environment that could help me grow in my relationship with Christ, grow relationships with other people through Christ, and feel comfortable sharing my beliefs all while receiving a college education.…

As schools become increasing diverse, cultural competence is essential. Thus, school counselors must have awareness, knowledge, and skills to help the needs of the Asian student population seek higher education. As a minority, I believe that multicultural counseling can greatly impact the lives of students. During my high school years, I felt unaccepted and not understood by my assigned high school counselor because she wasn’t cultural competence. Because my assigned high school counselor couldn’t understand why I chose to apply to only one university, Fresno State, I wasn’t able to go to her when I had questions about college. What she couldn’t understand was that although I wanted to earn an education for myself, I also wanted to stay in Fresno to help financially support my parents. Tatman (2004) states, “Counselors must acknowledge the value that the Hmong place on the family and community and the importance this value plays in all aspects of their lives”.…

The reason I choose APUS was because I was looking to pursue my degree with the luxury of flexibility. By flexibility, I mean simply time. I know college could be a scary decision, more high school with overdue papers and stress, I’ll pass. This was because the only scope on college I had were the constant reminders of tons of useless work that goes unnoticed. The idea of being in a classroom so large the professor has no Idea I exist. I know what you’re thinking, why not a community college? Well, community college would have been great, if I had the funds. This leaves me with a loss of words as well as ways to continue my education, or so I thought. I was looking for help and my mother asked me a simple question that I thought was ridiculous.…

As a student of the UIC's Honor College I believe that I will bring new innovative ideas to my fellow students and to those around me. I not only will aspire to better myself, but to encourage those around me to be the best student they can be. As the youngest sibling I have endured through many challenges. From struggling to explain my opinion about a subject in a way that will back up my reasoning to asserting my role as a leader. Although at times I have felt like giving up, I have prevailed. I learned how to state my opinion in a way that is informative, yet not rude. One challenge that I felt I excelled in exceptionally is being a leader. I have immersed myself in multiple school activates that leadership is a necessity. I am currently the president of the twelfth grade book club and a board member of the Senior Committee. With the skills that I have learned as a result of those positions I will be able to implement them in the classroom and in school events. As a student of UIC’s Honor College I plan to make use of all the advantages given to me. With the benefits provided to me I plan to take advantage of the honor courses that apply to Physical Therapy. I would also like to study abroad if I were given the opportunity to because I believe that you can learn a lot by immersing yourself in different cultures. It would be an honor for me to take part in the Honor College as a tutor because as a student who has had the experience of being both a tutor and a student I know that it can be a rewarding experience.…

I am determined to go to college even if there are some setbacks that make harder for me to do so. For example, when I was in 10th grade I found out that I had scoliosis, and the only way that I would be able to treat it was through surgery. At the time that I had found this out, I had already planned out my sophomore year; I was going to take 2 AP classes and 2 math courses above my grade level. At the time I truly believed that I was going to be able to go through the surgery, take all my classes, and very least get decent grades in all my classes, including my AP classes. However, that semester ended up being my worst.…

Hi, I’m Suzzana, I think you know that by now. I’m currently attending Camden County College. I am transferring because as you might know, most community colleges are two year schools. Community College has been great for me. I was never achievement orientated when I was in grade school. I was enrolled in an alternative school since the 8th grade. I was behind in my academics, but I would like to say I compensate in life experience. When I was younger around the age of 9 I was bullied a lot. I was chubby and I increasingly gained weight at that time. My influx of weight was the baggage of my emotions and my families struggles. My parents divorced when I was 10, my mom was escorted out by police. I only had my dad for a year. Then, I had missed…

How can I excel at Appalachian State University’s Honors College? There are two ways to answer that question. The first is in terms of me as a student. Individual attention is necessary for most high-ability students, such as me. Honors colleges provide that experience for me. More important, they promote the value of striving for the best one can do. In an academic culture skewed by grade inflations, honors colleges commemorate true accomplishments, instilling in students the pride that comes with being thoroughly in earnest about their education. This outstanding opportunity alone would push me to accomplish my goals as a student.…

I had two sets of goals, for the first one I went to St. Brigid’s College Boarding where they take part in Aboriginal tutoring in the afternoon as well as interviewed them. The three action plans I planned to take part in was to go to the tutoring sessions and take over a group and tutor them. I then made particular questions which I was going to interview them about, I wanted to get a range of answers and views so I raged the age from one person from each year group (7-12). After I got an insight on that I wanted to interview the AIEW of the school, who also organises the tutoring sessions. For that I made up a whole heap of other questions.…
