Criminal Justice Major was not my first option; in fact I never even considered criminal justice. I was an undeclared freshman who hated school and was thinking about dropping out to work in the union. The only reason I went to college was because I received basketball scholarships to many schools and I wanted to continue the sport I loved to play. Talking to my family about this they obviously did not want me to drop out and they wanted me to continue school and get a diploma. That where my brother says at least go for 2 years and get a degree so you can become a cop if you don’t like the union. So the next semester I joined criminal justice and ever since then criminal justice has been a passion to me, thanks…

I have chosen to return to school and pursue a Master’s degree in Criminal Justice for a couple of reasons. The first reason is to increase my personal knowledge of the Criminal Justice system which includes police trends, criminal/civil courts, juvenile justice and other aspects of law enforcement. During my experience as commissioned officer for the past four years I have learned that in order to consider myself as an experienced officer and train others in law enforcement, I have to increase my knowledge base in all areas of Criminal Justice through education. This would give me credibility if I chose to be a Field Training Officer or an instructor at a law enforcement training academy. In order for me to be confident in a supervisory position…

Since a very young age I was being taught who Jesus was, was read bible stories, and have gone to church. As I grew older, I began to truly understand the things I had been taught and developed my own understanding of my Christian faith. I developed relationships with people within my church and youth group that I attended and was comfortable talking with them about my faith. Also, I have helped lead some of my friends whom did not grow up in a Christ centered environment to Christ. As I was starting my college search I decided that a Christian affiliated school is where I wanted to go. I wanted to be in an environment that could help me grow in my relationship with Christ, grow relationships with other people through Christ, and feel comfortable sharing my beliefs all while receiving a college education.…

Coming into your freshmen year of college can be really hard. Eating wise most of the food on campus and around campus will be unhealthy. A healthy lifestyle is putting the right food and liquids in your body, getting the proper sleep at night so your body can function, and also having a workout schedule. To keep a heathy lifestyle in college you have to stop eating fast foods and foods such as noodles, chips and a lot of junk food. I believe also having a consistent workout schedule to keep your body in shape, maybe run on the treadmill for 30-45 mins or even 250 sit ups and push-ups every night.…

The reason I choose APUS was because I was looking to pursue my degree with the luxury of flexibility. By flexibility, I mean simply time. I know college could be a scary decision, more high school with overdue papers and stress, I’ll pass. This was because the only scope on college I had were the constant reminders of tons of useless work that goes unnoticed. The idea of being in a classroom so large the professor has no Idea I exist. I know what you’re thinking, why not a community college? Well, community college would have been great, if I had the funds. This leaves me with a loss of words as well as ways to continue my education, or so I thought. I was looking for help and my mother asked me a simple question that I thought was ridiculous.…

In order to have a successful journey through college one must prepare extensively beforehand. I learned this concept after my parents told tales about what they wished they had done during high school to prepare for college. In order to lay the groundwork for my future education, I enrolled in advanced dual credit courses, took many significant tests, researched college campuses that I was interested in, and also filled out numerous applications. Together, the aforementioned steps set me up for an easy acceptance when the time arrived.…

As a child, I always admired and respected men and women who served the United States in the Navy and armed forces. These positions required a lot of sacrifice which meant that only the strongest willed of them made it through. That will power seemed to distinguish them from other members of society, they were mentally and physically stronger. When it came time for me to look into applying for colleges, I looked for places that had good engineering programs, top tier educations, and a structured student campus life. Many universities had the former two requirements, however, very few had the latter requirement. While discussing college options with my computer engineering teacher, he recommended I look into the United States Naval Academy…

Courage means to overcome fear and failure, being inspired to take that next step even if you are afraid. Courage means to push forward even when you feel like you are being held back by a brick wall. This is a description of Luther Gibbs. He had it hard growing up and became an addict at a very young age. He was and is a strict parent but could also make you laugh your head off with one of his farfetched stories of how he met my mom. We would ask him to tell the stories over and over because they were funny and he always changed something in them so you didn’t know what was coming next. Imagination, humor and the ability to make others laugh without trying, Luther Gibbs, the strictest comedian you'll ever meet.…

Frederick Douglas once said “Education means emancipation. It means light and liberty. It means the uplifting of the soul of man into the glorious light of truth, the light by which men can only be made free.” The Congressional Black Caucus Foundation can be the foundation to which I build my education and further my goals. This scholarship will help me with the cost of attending San Jose State University and allow me to focus on my education than worrying about how I will pay for college. Education had been a hallmark in my family ever since I was in Jamaica. My mother was not able to attend school when she was younger, but she made sure that I had the opportunity to go to school no matter what. That is a promise she makes to my older sister and I that she will always find a way to send us to school. I took that to heart and saw all the sacrifice that my…

Cold November mornings are racing through my thoughts as I transition from summer to fall, and slowly they begin to consume every action, thought, and habit as they near. The slight breeze in my face, the rustling of the leaves as they begin falling, the movement of squirrels on the ground floor, looking for their lost and forgotten nuts they buried. This place is tradition; this place is my heritage, a rite of passage for me. This place is where I leave all stress behind at the gate, and can find serenity for a couple of hours. It’s what I do in that special place that defines me. The mountain is my special place, and hunting is my passion.…
