Discounted Dreams

In the movie Discounted Dreams, the main characters faced many challenges; some that were not by choice and some that were by choice. Though, the main characters shown in this movie were able to overcome most of their challenges and go to college. One of the characters that I found to be the most prominent in the movie was Mr. Sosa, the student who was going to college to become a chef. Some of the things that I remember about Mr. Sosa is that he had a tough childhood; growing up being part of a local gang, and being from a lesser fortunate family household. Though with everything that Mr. Sosa went through, he was able to overcome all those challenges and go on to live the life that he wanted for him and his family. Mr. Sosa and his family now are living in a home in a neighborhood that they are proud to say they live in, where as before Mr. Sosa went to college and got his degree for Culinary, they were not happy to say they lived in.
This is just one of the many examples that were brought up in the movie, Discounted Dreams, but to me; in my opinion, Mr. Sosa’s story is one that I believe is most impressive. Mr. Sosa was able to overcome his past life and not let the past control him, and he did not blame anyone else for his mistakes. I believe that Mr. Sosa going to college was a good choice for him and has made his life more like what he wanted for his family. Though, I do not know Mr. Sosa personally, from watching the movie; I could tell that he is happy with what his choices are now.
In my life there has been choices that I had no control over and that is life, we just have to learn from the choices that we have made and move on from them. Although, there has been and there will choices that I will have control over and I hope that I will be able to learn from those choices, whether they are good or bad; I hope to take away a message from the choices I make. I thank God everyday that I am alive because I am aware that there are some choices that I have made in the past where I could have died, but I have learned from them; and I plan to use them to help others hopefully not make the same mistakes that I did. I coach volleyball to younger students. I have coached for two years now and I have had a handful of different kids to deal with, but not one player on my team did I not know. I made it a promise to myself to make sure I was aware of my kids. I made sure that they all got along with me and each other. I didn’t want my kids to blame me or any other adult for their choices; so when we had practice and they would miss the ball or something else of that mistake nature, and they would try to blame someone else, a consequence was given to show that whoever made the mistake would have to deal with what comes next.
I know how hard life can be for some people, but it how they chose to deal with their life that defines them; not the past itself.

Although, life is never like the movies, movies are more than pure entertainment, some movies also teach life lessons. As an example, in 1986, John Hughes wrote and directed Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, it was about Ferris Bueller and his friends who decided to follow Ferris’s plan to skips school in order to have an adventure around the the city of Chicago. I have seen Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, several times since I was little; however, I have always disliked the movie. However, I recently watched it again and I now have the ability to fully understand the concepts in the movie. An essential quote that hangs over my head is when Ferris Bueller says, “Life moves pretty fast. If you don’t stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it,” and Ferris is right because life is not going to stop and with life constantly moving it is impossible to catch everything; however, if students only focus on establishing a future, they are missing on the presents. Just like me, throughout school I have only focused on school; I spent most of my time studying. However, I began to realize that life is more than just studying for school in order to have a career. College grants independence. Independence is an immense amount of responsibility. I am free from watchful eyes, and I can do whatever I want without being criticized by my parents. Thus, I began to realize that life also has opportunities for mistakes and for “ditch…

Choices shape our lives in many ways. It is impossible to go through life without making any. What we choose can define us, can close off a part of our life that, had we chosen differently, could have led to something completely different. Many things can influence our choices, from morals, to peers, to experience.…

Both Freud and Jung provided important and interesting theories on dreams; encompassing their functions, their roots, and their meanings. Freud looked at dreams as a result of repressed memories, particularly repressed sexual memories from our childhood. Jung however, believed that dreams delved beyond sexual repression during younger years, to other problems, be it trauma, anxiety etc. Jung also believed dreams changed predominately through middle adult years, while Freud believed the opposite. There is little empirical evidence to reinforce either Freud or Jung’s theories, however, their contributions to the study of dreams in psychology cannot be lessened or denied.…

God has given us the gift of free will, meaning that we have the choice to do right and wrong. While God has desires for us to do and to follow the things which are right, He knows that sometimes we will fail and follow the desires of our own heart. Being petrified to accomplish a dream is what haunts myself from trying to succeed. Finally figuring out what to do with my life was the beginning of a turning point for me, now it was time to follow through that dream and go to college. As I stated in the previous paragraph, a lot of the world today thinks money is the true sign of success and my mom and dad we’re firm believers in that. I figured that they wouldn’t be proud of their son because he wants to write for a living. “If you didn’t have a career as a businessman or something else that’s high paying we think of you as a failure” was always something I would expect my dad would say to me. Which is why college at the time was not my main priority for me once high school was over. The…

God has made us all stewards of our lives. We do not become those stewards of life we are the stewards. He has made us owners of everything in our life. We own our time, money, interests, and everything else that we have a part in. I don’t think that everybody shares this view of their life. Some believe that they have no control of what happens to them and some believe that they have total control and nobody makes decisions when it comes to their lives except them.…
