ABSTRACT
The media often misrepresents a person, a people, a place, or an idea, and does so without hesitation. There are many methods and mediums the media uses to reach the great majority of the world. Whether it is by use of print, such as newspapers or magazines, or by broadcast, by means of television, radio and the internet, the media has a way of presenting information to suit its purpose, whatever that may be. Using a series of images and words of and about Latinos/Hispanics that were collected from the internet and newspapers, this essay will seek to reflect on the positive and negative connotations of these images and words.

Reflections on Diversity in the Media
What is the media? Is it more than our eyes and ears to the world? Is the media more than words and images on a screen meant to provide information? There are many definitions of what the media is and what purpose it serves. Regardless of these definitions, the fact remains that the media shapes the world. It has the capability to drive the world in whatever direction it so desires. The media has become a numbers game, driven by ratings and demographics, seeking to provide information of a shock value-centered subject matter, which will draw more viewers. As such, a story of a graphic or tragic nature would gain more viewers than one of a soft-hearted or positive, humane-centered story. Given these facts, it is a rarity to find a lead story that carries a positive vibe. These stories are usually given brief segments, usually no more than 2 to 3 minutes of spot-light time. The media often misrepresents a person, a people, a place, or an idea, and does so without hesitation. There are many methods and mediums the media uses to reach the great majority of the world. Whether it is by use of print, such as newspapers or magazines, or by broadcast, by means of

Research Paper: You will choose a specific group in American society (gender, race, etc.). You will then explore how that group is represented in a variety of media (television, film, music, video games, etc.) and what affect that has on our society and on members of that group. Your research should include both primary sources (the media – shows, songs, films, etc.) AND secondary sources (criticism of media, news articles, studies on racial or gender groups, etc.)…

According to a study published by the National Hispanic Media Coalition, titled “The Impact of Media Stereotypes on Opinions and Attitudes Towards Latinos,” the media portrayals of Latino/as are largely negative and unfavorable representations of the Latino/a culture. The study asked over 900 participants to report the various roles they remember seeing played by Latino/as in films and on television. The study found that seventy-one percent of the participants saw Latinos portrayed as criminals or gang-members on television or in movies, very often or sometimes. Furthermore, sixty-four percent see Latinos portrayed as gardeners on a consistent basis. The most frequent characters non-Latinos see Latinos play are as follows: criminal or gang member, gardener, and/or maid. This finding…

"Minority" is a disparaging term used to place people in boxes that are used to confine them. This confinement just leads them to a life full of limiting and derogatory stereotypes. However, identifying what leads an influential country that is known for its diversity, equality and is often referred to as the “country of the free” to have so much mental limitation for its people, is not an easy proposition, and solely blaming the media derails this task. It is not entirely the film and television industry’s fault, but the audience's fault as well. The media use shows and movies to intrigue their audiences and they usually do that through familiarity, showing audiences what they have been exposed to previously at some point in their lives. The…

Television is also being accused of creating an unethical gap in the way that minorities are portrayed compared to the majority. While the larger networks are beginning to diversify their shows, the numbers still do not add up. Hispanic and Native American characters composed less than one percent of all characters on television (******). African-American characters added up to about 11 percent which is close to the actual population makeup.…

One of the most obvious untrue assumptions surrounding immigrants is that Latinos are more prone to crime than their American counterparts. Rivera confronts the question of whether immigrants are committing crimes at higher rates than U.S. citizens. The debate started with a story about a drunk driver in Virginia Beach who killed two teenage girls in a terrible accident. The driver was an “illegal” Mexican. Rivera accusing Bill O’Reilly of making this same “cheap political point,” Rivera said, “[He] could have been a Jewish drunk, an Italian drunk, or an Irish drunk, would you still care?” (p. 5). I believe this is the perfect example to showcase the constant double standard that exists when it comes to use Latinos as ‘scapegoats’ to take the blame for high rates of crimes or other issues. Statistics show that immigrants are no more prone to committing crimes than are the native-born.…

Marshall McLuhan said, “All media exist to invest our lives with artificial perceptions and arbitrary values”. Yet the media is very important in how so many people get to know the world around them. For example, when the lower and middle class do not interact with the upper class, it is impossible for them to understand about the upper class. The only way most of the other classes understand the upper class is through media portrayal. Media is one of the biggest networks in the world at the present day. It has been the significant part of the human life. Everyone is directly involved in and spends so many of his or her waking hours with some form of the media. Television, radio, newspaper, books, internet & social network…

The media today influences a lot of people’s lives around the world. It mostly influences us in a good way, like facetime, snapchat or instagram, but it sometimes influences us in a bad way. One of the bad things that the media does, is furthered stereotypes that influence our society. These stereotypes have been prolonged by youtube, tv shows, movies, and even presidential candidates. A group that has been specifically affected by the media are Latinos and Hispanics. The article “Five Common Latino Stereotypes in Television and Film” by Nadra Kareem Nittle, explains how Latinos and Hispanics are portrayed in movies and tv shows. The media is the means of communication, as radio and television, newspapers, and magazines that reach or influence people widely. The growth of the media has spread vastly over the years. The media is also known as a “channel of mass communication.” “Mass Media incorporates all those mediums through which information is distributed to the masses. These include advertisements, magazines, newspapers, radio, television, and the Internet” (Sebastian). The media introduces many new things to the public, both positive and negative. The media harms the American culture by creating these celebrity idols, the glorification of violence, sex, and drug and alcohol abuse. The media positively affects the American culture by the quick and easy flow of useful information and education, its major role in developments like fight against racism, fight against gender bias, world poverty and spreading awareness about world peace. The media affects the American culture in several ways, beneficial and harmful. The media affects the way people view the world, others, and the way they live their life. The media also, however, influences the way people learn, interact, and engage with the rest of the world.…
