Reflection: Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society
SOS

As an executive officer in Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society, each individual is responsible for a legacy project during the school year. I was responsible for SOS Children’s Village which is a foster care neighborhood that houses children that were abused, neglected and/or abandoned. Even though this was a one-day experience, I was thrilled about the opportunity to work with children as I believe that no child should be denied proper medical care and a healthy home. It is said that time goes by when you are having fun. This was true for our experience as we went four hours over time. I coordinated leadership and team building activities for the children in which both the volunteers and participants enjoyed. Who knew that in five hours’ strong bonds can be developed with a stranger that you might not encounter again.

Before I understood the impact that my legacy project had on me, I was more concerned with earning volunteer hours. However, developing bonds with children that had past traumas quickly surpassed my expectations. Based on the atmosphere and response

After my attendance I knew this was an event that I want to continue take part in. During my tenure at Broward College, I participated as a group member on the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society team. We were responsible for informing attendees about the various cancers, causes and potential treatments. Relay for Life is an overnight fundraising event done by the American Cancer Society to help fight cancer. I took part in the Luminaria Ceremony which usually takes place after dark where candles are lit inside a personalized bag and placed around a track. The bags represent glowing tributes to individuals who have been affected by cancer. I interacted with survivors and individuals that are still battling cancer for approximately six hours. I wished I could have stayed overnight but never-the-less the time spent with them was

Thirty of those fifty service hours are a mandatory aspect of the junior year curriculum and must involve work with either the poor or marginalized. Personally, I chose to complete my necessary hours with the organization Outdoors for All, specifically working with the marginalized. Outdoors for All (OFA) strives to enrich the quality of life for children and adults with disabilities through outdoor recreation by offering programs just as skiing, kayaking, and biking. I participated in their downhill ski program, teaching lessons to people ranging from four to thirty-five years old with a vast array of both mental and physical disabilities. Volunteering with OFA improved not only my teaching skills but my ability to work with all people regardless of their…

At the age of six, I struggled to find the meaning behind all of the little iron on patches, and what they had been leading up to. The Gold award, awarded to 5.4% of eligible girls, is the most prestigious award, above a silver and bronze. It definitely isn’t attained without hard work and dedication. The guidelines of the project are clear: you need to exemplify leadership qualities and create a lasting impact in the community. My idea to work with the elderly and the youth group from my church came immediately. Observing my community, I noted that the elderly and youth don’t communicate or interact with one another. I believe that those types of relationships are essential in life, due to my own connection with my grandmother. She is one of the funniest people I know, and even though she is 90, we can still connect on a personal level and laugh at just about anything together. I want others to experience that for themselves, because even though they may be older than us, they are still young at heart, and have all led interesting lives with stories beyond…

Furthermore, I hope to accomplish from my senior project of donating to the Child Advocacy center for their hard work and involvement of “ChildHood abuse’’ and cutting down on neglect and uncaring parents in Bastrop, Tx. For my main goal is to locate my real parents and ask them the question I’ve waited for years to ask them. Why? I expected to be able to touch others and spread out the word, that “ we all have feelings”. Assessing my project, I’ve accomplished a lot in just a short time period span. I know see what I’m capable of achieving. As long as I keep faith and keep moving straight. Final thoughts about my senior project is I would like to thank all that has helped me and listened to my thoughts and concerns pertaining to ChildHood Abuse. It’s been a great blessing having all you by my side and thank you all to friends and family helping me accomplish my goal. I’ve taken multiple turns in this project, along with many emotional obstacles. It wasn’t an easy project but I would like to say, I did it! In conclusion, “Together we are strong, alone we are…

Every Friday during the semester, I made my way to an elementary school to participate with the Adopt-A-School program; which was apart of an educational initiative for my sorority. The mission of the Adopt-A-School program represents a tremendous opportunity to positively affect the lives of students, teachers, and volunteers. My chapter chose to adopt Berg Jones Elementary School in Monroe, Louisiana. This was an inner city school that ranged from Pre-K to grade 5, and included about 500 students. Through my two years of volunteering, I was rewarded with such a gratifying experience as well as some encouragement of what I wanted to do as a career in the future.…

Relay for Life is a cancer awareness and prevention fundraising event. It is one of the main fundraisers for the American Cancer Society. The fundraiser event itself is both staffed and coordinated by volunteers in over 5000 different communities and multiple countries. A typical Relay for Life event can be anywhere from six to twenty-four hours in length. It is during these hours that volunteers are expected to keep one team member walking on the track at all times. This act signifies that cancer never sleeps or takes a break. Each team in the event also sets up their own themed campsite. It is at this campsite that the team not only rests, but also hosts events and activities for those not currently walking in the…

When it comes to my valuable experience, I began my community service one month ago, and I go to Rafael Hernandez School to assist second-year children in doing their homework every Monday. I used to think that spending time with kids could be tedious; however, I was embraced by friendly children as soon as I arrived at school. Their eyes bright with curiosity stared at my Volunteer Pass, and they tried to pronounce my name in different funny tones.…

My project has extended vastly beyond the five hours required. I have remained in contact with a few students via email whom I truly bonded with. Many of the students come from low-income families, and some are currently in the foster care system. Due to personal experience with my adopted brother, I know that sometimes, all a child needs is consistency – something or someone to hold onto when their life is constantly subject to change. I was proud to act as that consistent person in their life, and will continue to do so.…

A particular experience that was meaningful to me occurred during the summer of my junior year. I volunteered at a rehabilitation center, and was exposed to a diverse patient population. Their diagnoses varied from head trauma to Alzheimer's. During my first visit, my assignment was rather leisurely, just playing cards and becoming acquainted with the patients. Admittedly, I was nervous, however, I soon discovered that how such a simple task of playing cards affected these patients. To some, I was the only visitor, and to others struggling with their deficits, I was a safe place because I never knew them prior to their injuries. My time here impacted me most on my final day. Two of my favorite patients expressed how distraught they were…

During the summer of 2014 I volunteered for the Boys And Girls Club which was located at Mary Ward (3850 Finch AV E, Scarborough, ON M1T 3T6). The dates I volunteered at this program was in early July of 2014 for two weeks. I decided to volunteer at this organization because I was willing to help children tackle problems that they faced. As well, I enjoyed assisting children to develop skills and knowledge that they needed in order to reach their full potential. During my time of volunteer at the Boys and Girls club my role was to take care of children and help them with whatever they needed. I also helped set up various activities such as sports and games. In addition, I dealt with several conflicts between the children and made sure that…

As a volunteer for the organization, I along with other volunteers have contributed our efforts and ideas to the advancement of the organization. I have organized many events in order to raise fund to buy equipments and necessities for orphan children. Not only do we support them with materials, we also provide them with education which is the most valuable thing in a child's life. Along with learning new things, the children have the opportunities to play games that help them further apply the knowledge they have just learned in real life situation. Besides, I was able to motivate and inspire other members in order to achieve goals. I am proud of what my friends and I did for the children and it's a way for us to give back to the society and the unfortunate ones.…

Throughout the night, we would engage in conversation and establish new friendships with interesting and kind people. I was fascinated with hearing the stories told by the people we met. It undoubtedly changed my once uneducated perspective on often stigmatized individuals, realizing they were important humans too, as deserving of love and nurture as everyone is. Some were raised in unfortunate predicaments that denied them of their basic rights, whether it be poverty, domestic violence, or abuse; all horrible issues that I was so fortunate to not have had to deal with. Some found themselves struggling with drug addiction and alcoholism, until they were left with nothing. I was able to listen to their stories, letting them know I cared, and in return providing me with their wisdom and advice. By the end of each day with project HOPE, I was certain of two things: all lives were important and mattered, despite racial, economic, or ideological differences, and everyone deserved a friend to talk to and confide in. I am glad I could put any differences aside, and be a compassionate friend to whoever needed one. From this eye-opening experience, I believe I am a better person and more inclusive individual. To be the best person one can be, it is imperative to eliminate any biases and strive to help everyone in…

Specifically, I have coordinated the “Walk” portion of the multifaceted day-long event, whose attendance is in the thousands, for the past 4 years. Raising awareness of diseases such as cancer, can lead to an increased consciousness of steps needed to prevent long-term progression. In this way, I can positively impact my community’s overall health. Seeing firsthand the impression these events can have on breast cancer survivors and their families is truly inspiring towards continuing to work with these communities. My personal interactions with breast cancer survivors and their loved ones during these yearly events have continually reinforced my passion for pursuing a career in…
