SCHOOL: FACULTY OF LAW MODULE CODE: CSP1001
TUTORIAL DAY/TIME: MONDAY, 6pm

REFLECTIVE PIECE TWO
COMMUNITY SERVICE OBJECTIVES
Due: June 17, 2013

TOPIC: VISION 2030 AND COMMUNITY SERVICE OBJECTIVES The agency which I have selected to be my Community service Project Site is that of the Cedar Valley Basic School, located in Cedar Valley, Sligoville, St. Catherine. The school was founded approximately Thirty years ago, in September of 1983. The school is mainly community based with students from the age of two and a half onwards. The school has been housed in what was created to be the community centre in this rural community. The Cedar Valley Basic school has as its aim, the ‘Educational Enrichment of the Community’s Young’ and ensures this by encouraging parents to send their toddlers out so as to experience a school environment at a tender age. The school is currently run by a staff of two Early Childhood Educators, Mrs. Suzette Balfour who has been with the school for nineteen years and Mrs. E. Lawrence, who has been with the school for fourteen years. The school currently has fifteen students registered for this ongoing school year. The VISION 2030 Goal of ‘Ensuring a healthy environment’ is that which I will be focusing my community service project on. As previously asserted, this goal is, for me, the most important goal of this development plan. The conservation of the environment is important, as the environment is not a renewable entity, although some aspects may be renewable, aspects such as the Ozone Layer, are not and continue to deteriorate because of bad environmental

As a Planning and Zoning Technician in the development of the 2030 Master Plan in 2015 for the City of Opelika, I was tasked to draft key initiatives for the Planning Department. First, I reviewed and updated the current zoning map and future land use map while considering future transportation and infrastructure needs. Second, I was assigned to create a GIS layer for the three-mile extraterritorial area called the planning jurisdiction, including creating initiatives for this area that might benefit the future growth of the city. Third, I was encouraged to add staff recommendations for future zoning ordinance updates to adopt for implementation in the 2030 Master Plan.…

At chapel Street Primary School we offer a variety of services e.g. integrated early education, childcare, community support groups and parent survival courses. Some of these services may include visits to a child’s home or could even have links to training or employment opportunities for families with children under five. In my work setting we help to support working parents by extending the day by combining early education and childcare e.g. breakfast clubs, after school clubs. By offering these clubs different agencies can work together for the benefit of each child.…

I have had experience volunteering with the Urdd, supervising groups of primary school children at Glan-Llyn; where another member of staff and I were responsible for a group of children while they took part in various activities. Each Tuesday morning for the last year, I have volunteered at Ysgol Gynradd Cemaes at the Infants' department, where I helped the children with their work and spent time with small groups of children on specific tasks. During my time volunteering at Ysgol Gynradd Cemaes, I also spent time with pupils who suffered from learning difficulties, and this helped me to see how certain tasks have to be adapted in order for pupils of varying abilities to succeed. I have also played a large part in the process of transferring pupils in my school's catchment area from primary school to secondary school, by volunteering as a Year Twelve buddy, providing a point of contact at the school for the pupils if they felt in any way uneasy or upset. I was also part of a group of Year Twelve students who ran an arts club for pupils from years 3-9 where primary school children were introduced to the school and some of its current pupils and students through a series of arts and performance workshops. Through…

I had the opportunity to observe at the Isabel Patterson Child Development Center in Long Beach. It was my first time observing in this center so I had to be there before my observation time, which was at 2:30pm. Once, I entered the building the atmosphere was welcoming and enjoyable. The children I observed where around the ages of three to five. During my observation there was twenty-eight children and five teachers present. The building was all wooden on the inside and at the entrance there was a welcome wall colored with a rainbow. There were art projects hanged on the walls as well as learning material. On the sides of the of the building shelves were organized with labels so that the children would know where to put back the material.…

Several factors that have contributed to my interest in Early Childhood Education have been my time as a volunteer, both my mother and grandmother, and the fact that you are able to inspire an entire generation of children. While volunteering at Nestucca Valley Elementary school I worked in Susan O’Leary and Dana Hulbert’s classrooms. During my time in their classrooms, I learned that I worked extremely well with a variety of students and was able to show compassion and patience with the most challenging students. My greatest inspiration for going into this career has been both my…
