Reflection On The Latino Scholars Of Promise
Being part of an institution such as Latino Scholars of Promise has instilled many values in me. The Latino Scholars of Promise is a program that is dedicated to preparing soon to be college students for the future by developing leadership and preparing them for the real world. It has affected me as an individual and has affected other aspects of my life. Being part of a program like this one has helped me view my surroundings in a different way. I am able to see things differently and act in a way in which those beliefs could be used. Without the help of this program I would not be able to learn and put into practice the four values I hold dear today: perseverance, valor and leadership. There are so many instances in which I am driven and determined to use them such as my education, helping others succeed, and most importantly inspiring my …show more content…
If you are willing to persevere, you are certainly able to lead others through the road you've walked. Leaders help themselves and others to do the right things. They set direction and build an inspiring vision. Leadership is about mapping out where you need to go to "win" as a team; and it is dynamic, exciting, and inspiring. Through the academic program I was able to acquire leadership and become a role model for younger students. Most importantly I led others by being an example through my own victories. As a leader to others, you are able to make a big difference, and that difference affects the way they view their future and themselves. I learned to care for others and their needs, and I have seen the impact of the support I have given to them. I remember clearly that I used to struggle myself, as well; the feeling of never having someone there to inspire and encourage felt as if I had to venture into an unknown world. I knew for a fact that the Latino Scholars program was right for me. I wanted to lead others, motivate them to do their best, and most importantly give them a

I am a leader. I have all the qualities that make a great leader, but I was not born this way.Experiences and how someone reacts to those experiences are what truly make a leader. One of the most influential experiences I have gone through is called the Lebanon High School Marching Band. I am certain that I wouldn’t be who I am today if it weren’t for marching band. Before coming to high school I already had leadership qualities, but band helped bring all those great qualities together and helped me get past my two major flaws: my lack of self-confidence and the fact that I was probably one of the shyest people you would EVER meet. When I joined marching band, I spent most of my waking hours sweating and suffering alongside wonderful people that I longed to…

Yet, the various organizations at Austin College sparked my interest, and slowly but surely I began to get involved. Although I have been overwhelmed at times, I quickly learned that being involved in the Sherman community and Austin College’s organizations have become a vital part of my college experience. My experience in these short 7 months have taught me the value of service and being involved. When I performed service events in the past, it was to gain service hours and build up a résumé. Now I serve because helping others give me a genuinely great feeling. My experience with being a leader in the groups that we did was a great learning experience. I learned a lot not only about myself, but also about what it is like to be the leader of a group. Leading a group was harder than I thought it would be and knowing how to start, what activities or techniques to use and what to say or do next was also harder than I thought.…

I am a great leader and throughout my high school career I have taken every opportunity I could to display this. For three out of my four years I have participated as a Muskoka Woods Leader. This required me to spend a week at a summer camp at which I would lead a group of grade 7s through a series of fun activities. Being a leader at this camp wasn't always fun and games though. I had encountered many situations with the grade 7s in which I would have to improvise and apply my knowledge of leadership to sort out. For example, during one of our games we would play, there was a little boy who was sitting off on the side not participating. I went over to talk to the boy to find out what was wrong. When I found out that he didn't understand how to play the game I knew exactly how to fix it. I brought him over to a corner and me and him played our own little one on one version of the game. I taught him how to play and I played with him until he was finally ready to join the other grade 7s. As well as being a Muskoka Leader, in my grade 11 year, I was a Link Leader for my high school. This was different from being a Muskoka Leader because this time I was working with grade 9 students who were entering high school. Throughout the year I worked with the grade 9s giving them secret tips and tricks about how they could survive their freshman year of high…

I grew up in a typical Mexican household in southwest Detroit, and it was not until recently when I became aware of what this meant. Being a Latino student in this country means I am not expected to make it far; it means the higher success I reach in academia, the lonelier I will become. “A Mexican boy, from a dirt-poor village, from Detroit, go to college? HA. Good luck with that.” These discriminatory ideas that society tries to implant in me only strengthen and encourage me to strive for greater success. I am proud to say that breaking stereotypes has become a hobby for me. I am at the top of my class, an active member of my community, have leadership positions in several organizations, I perform professionally in a cultural band, and I even compete in soccer year-round. While people of my background are consistently trapped at the bottom of the social hierarchy, I am proud of who I am and I would not change it for the world. My low socioeconomic status and the racial marginalization I suffer in this country has made me the vibrant young man I am today and formulated my long-term goal to rid my family from the shackles of…

Apart from the Toby Keith Foundation Teen Board and the Junior Rotarian Club, I have volunteered with various other organizations such as the Red Cross, Moore Food and Resource Center and the OCARTA Wellness Hub. I have chosen to dedicate my time to these community service activities because I know that a small effort can go a big way in changing other's lives. Along with community service activities, I have also dedicated my time within my Latino community. I have attended numerous leadership conferences aimed at Hispanic students, including the Hispanic Youth Leadership Conference at the Oklahoma City University and the TREE Conference at the University of Oklahoma. I was also selected to attend the Latinos Without Borders Fall Camp at the University of Oklahoma. Attending all of these events have changed my life, because I have learned how to fight the barriers that plague my community and culture. It is important to me to be involved within my cultural community because I believe in order for a community to prosper, its members have to become aware of the problems within their community and work to better…

I believe that I have exceled in the field of leadership. Leadership is the position or function of a leader and a person who guides or directs a group. My advisory voted anonymously for an advisory leader in ninth grade, and I became my advisory representative by getting the most votes. As the advisory representative I attended meetings and helped organize and plan for advisory. Another example for leadership is in the summer I was the head counselor for Fun in the Sun Summer Camp. My responsibilities as the head counselor was to make sure all counselors were doing everything they were supposed to do, and to run counselor meetings and I had my own group of kids to watch after. The final example of leadership is babysitting my mom’s close friend Marina Dubin’s son. My duties’ for being his babysitter was to watch and take care of him while he was awake and asleep. I…

As a straight A student all my life I have to work extra hard each and every day to be able to accomplish even my simplest goals because I know I should always push myself to become better at beating the game, that is life. But while all this is true, I know that no matter how hard I work I cannot possibly achieve all my goals and dream no matter what actions I take, at least not alone. John Quincy Adams once said, “If your actions inspire others to dream more, learn more, do more, and become more, you are a leader.” This powerful words are extremely meaningful, especially to me. This means that if you try your hardest regularly to not only gain new knowledge, become more productive, make new goals and wonder about your future, and become a better you, no matter what circumstances you are under you are a person who will help others even unintentionally. Personally, I know it can sometimes be hard to get through the day while being alert and ready to work, but when I see someone who is dedicated to not only exceeding themselves but to make others succeed too, it makes me want to do the same. I always go out of my way to help others because that is what a real leader would do. Joining the Beta Club where each member is a leader will allow me to…

Although not being financially able to qualify to be a philanthropist, I donate my services to those who need it most. To influence others is to be a leader, and as a leader that can help others understand the importance and the outcome a college education can have, I exceed to be the influence one would need. I believe that leadership traits are in one’s personality. The motivation of wanting to be a leader or become a better leader I think just comes naturally to one. I think to become a leader you have to be motivated and determined to improve things and make things better in general. One must be positive, always trying to look on the bright side of things. But at the same time, they must be rational and be real about things. I think that leadership can be taught to one, and we become a better leader from our mistakes. I think that seeing someone else lead positively can help us become a better leader, and working with others that have the same incisive look on things can make someone a better leader. Think that to be taught to become a leader you have to want to be one, and you can’t be negative about…
