In my opinion, the most significant chapter in the Johnstone text would have to be Chapter 15. It’s about the discussion of the future viewpoint on religion is addressed. Religion in its historical context, and as a society, we will not have faith until today without substantial foundation. However, I believe Chapter 15 is significant because as a society we must also know what religion has to offer in the future as well as have an insight on the possibilities that might occur based on what has happened in the past. In addition, if there are any issues that could possibly occur in the future, regarding religion, that we know how to handle the situation and possibly resolve the issues before it occurs. There are several key topics within Chapter 15 that I will deal with and converse why I consider they are significant. According to Johnstone (2007), furthermore to the plenty traditional signs of religion, there are new manifestations emerging everyday (page 384). These include everything from people showing “Jesus Saves” bumper labels on their cars all the way to picketers and paraders fighting either side of the abortion problem trying to ask for more popular support (Johnstone, 2007, page 385). Both ways you look at it there is a large amount of religious activity that is attracting the attention of millions around the world (page 385). This can give hints as to what type of future is waiting for religion as well as putting an effect on people’s view on the future of religion (page 385). According to Johnstone (2007), additionally to the plentiful traditional signs of religion, there are new manifestations emerging everyday (page 384). Either way you look at it plenty of religious activities that attract millions of people around the world (page 385). This can give clues as to what type of future is in hold for religion as well as placing an influence on people’s perspective on the future of religion (page 385). Now, the question is what features can define what is in store for religion in the future? Church/synagogue membership and church/synagogue attendance both have a significant influence on advising us on the power of religion and people’s obligation to religion (Johnstone, 2007, page 385). During the past sixty years, the church and synagogue -membership has not expressively changed (page 385). This can perhaps indicate that in the future the church/synagogue membership will carry on to not mainly change except something is done to increase or decrease this matter. Furthermore, church and synagogue attendance has stayed in the low forties percentage range and therefore, has not significantly changed in the past sixty years (page 385). While statistics has showed there has been no main change in the past sixty years for neither membership nor attendance, now there are still a great amount of citizens who keep memberships and attend worship regularly (page 385). So we can conclude that since there is apparently no significant change in membership and attendance, various religious groups could be decreasing while others could be developing (page 385). As for the future, we can hope to suppose growth of membership and attendance or at the very least we will to continue to observe a similar membership and attendance about religion. Part of Johnstone text explains, there are many reasons that effect the growth of a church (Johnstone, 2007, page 391). One aspect is the moving from one church to another (page 391). Another aspect that effects the growth of a church is the birth of children from parents who are members of a church (page 391). The arrival of members’ of the same faith to...
