We as a student learn about society’s issues in our textbooks. Usually textbooks explain solutions to those problems; however, in reality solutions that we learn in our textbooks don’t simply work the way textbooks explain. As a result, I think this service-learning experience is a great opportunity for me to understand not only the issues that we have in our society, but also learn the obstacles that get in a way to solve a problem. In a traditional course students are passive in a way that they don’t have control over courses. They seat in classrooms, listen

The main aim of service learning for nursing students is to improve their ability to provide person centred care as stated by Dempsey, French, Hillege and Wilson (2009). Service learning enables the students to actually be in the field and learn how the culturally appropriate care is provided as stated by Roxanne Amerson (2010). It also develops the critical thinking skill and reflection skill of each individual student. Service learning also helps in developing the communication, collaboration and leadership skill of an…

Passive vs. Active Learners. Former traditional teaching and learning styles instilled passive learning: “Me teacher--you student,” “I teach--you learn,” or “I talk you--listen.” To evolve into a critical thinker one must desire evidence, data and be willing to be an active learner. We must…

Reflecting on the service learning that I did this semester helped me grow as a leader myself. By seeing Emily and D’Juan enjoying leading and helping students at Neumann grow has helped me in the business world that I am in. I have learned to listen to my employees more because they have a lot of great ideas that no one ever asked them to share. I have also become aware of my weaknesses and strengths. I am excellent at the mechanics of my job, but I lack some of the social interaction so I am working on it by interacting with the employees and letting them help me come up with team games to play that they will want to engage in. I have also learned to teach instead of just doing. I want my crew to grow as employees and people themselves and get the most out of their time while they are working with us. I enjoyed doing this service rather than others offered by Neumann because it related to me personally and I would love to continue to volunteer for the times when the Elwyn school students come over to Neumann to interact with Neumann students. This was my first…

I decided to start volunteering at the local humane society because I’ve always been really passionate about animals and wanted to start benefiting them in the community. Prior to my service I was delighted because I’ve wanted to start volunteering for years and was glad the opportunity had presented itself. Throughout my experience I learned a great deal and met a lot of new people. Even though I’ve only just started serving my time at the Fox Valley Humane Association I can truly see the difference it has made in the community.…

College campuses have encouraged this through service-learning, which puts students in communities to serve in different areas and subsequently learn from that service. A study at St. Mary’s College found that twenty-nine of thirty students engaged in service-learning felt that they were more aware of racial inequality and their own prejudice (Reed-Bouley, p.2). Engaging those facing discrimination and making space for discussion void of hateful rhetoric are important ways of addressing discrimination that are becoming more and more…
