Reflection on Practice - Graduate Nurse in Mental Health
Reflection Seven

Description: After working for nine months in acute mental health settings, I was allocated to go to a rehabilitation stream open ward with long-stay patients.

Feelings: Initially I found the transition quite difficult as the style of nursing is markedly different in a rehabilitation ward as opposed to an acute ward. I was not confident at first as to what my role entailed on the ward, and how to best assist the patients work towards achieving discharge from the ward. I also struggled with building rapport with some of the patients who on the ward who were difficult to engage in conversation.

Evaluation: By acknowledging that I lacked confidence in this area of nursing, I was able to review my knowledge and skills and find ways to adapt these to this new setting and to identify areas where my knowledge or skills were insufficient. For example, prior to this ward, I had not had the opportunity to administer many depot medications, and so that was an area of knowledge and skill that I was able to identify was lacking, and I was able to focus on these areas to develop them and turn them into a strength.

Analysis: By identifying the areas of my knowledge and skills that I needed to develop, I was able to seek out assistance from other staff members, my staff development nurse, and to focus on these areas in my personal study at home. This enabled me to make the transition easier and to adapt much quicker to this new ward.

Conclusion: Although I found the transition initially difficult and confronting, by reviewing my knowledge and skills I was able to recognise that I already possessed a great deal of knowledge and skills that were required for this ward, which bolstered my confidence and allowed me to focus on the skills or knowledge that I had not had the opportunity to develop prior to this ward, thereby further developing myself as a registered nurse working in mental health.

The Master of Science in Nursing with an emphasis in nursing education can be understood in further detail by an interview process outlining a person’s career overview, graduate educational experience and their present vocational position. The individual chosen (D.C.) is a mentor, who is handing down the baton to me, as the clinical instructor for a group of nursing students at Biola University. D.C. has numerous years experience as a bedside nurse as well as an educator.…

This is an interview of a Master’s- prepared nurse who has recently assumed an Assistant Director of Nursing position. The intend of the interview is to show how a graduate of a Master of Science in Nursing would adequately prepare a nurse to assume a higher role in the field of nursing practice, education or administration. This achievement offers the individual with many opportunities for growth and opens the door to different career possibilities. I chose to interview B.A., a fellow instructor at the Anaheim nursing school where we teach. Aside from knowing that she is optimally qualified to fill her post, I am also impressed by how she rose from the ranks, and how she values education as the tool to reach for her dreams.…

By utilizing the information presented in this class, I was able to learn, apply and document via a written paper information on Erikson’s developmental stages and Butler’s Life Review. I was able to practice my interviewing skill during my interview of R.V. The take away I had with his interview is that it takes work to be successful and you have to have balance in your life. It may not come when you are at the peak of working or during education, but you must find the balance. I have enjoyed my time in this class and I will use he skills that I have learned and I will apply the information that I read as I enter into my practice as a nurse and hopefull as a nurse…

I have been reflecting on why I have chosen the path to become Psychiatric-mental health nurse practitioner over other master’s degree in nursing. Mental illness is one of the major medical concerns in our country today. There is significant shortage of psychiatric mental health practitioners to meet the demand of the mental illness population. I want to be a part of a big change in the health care setting by providing care to those who are not receiving mental health services.…

According to theorist Patricia Brenner, the transition into the nursing profession can be broken down into five levels based on skill acquisition and critical judgement: novice, advanced beginner, competent, proficient, and expert. In order to progress from the novice stage to clinical expertise it is essential that we apply the knowledge that we learned into experiential learning. The only way we will be able to grow is using the knowledge we learned and “hands on” practice.…

    H. describes her position as one that has changed from supporting nursing practice and interpreting information, to one that conducts research and develops pathways for care. She states she uses nursing theory, evidenced based practice (EBP), and critical thinking skills to change nursing care provided throughout the hospital. In addition to her full time role at the hospital, Mrs. H. teaches BSN classes at a local university. Mrs. H. admits all of this would not be possible without her education, commitment and determination in life. Her career opportunities “fell into her lap” as she describes it. However, Mrs. H. will also humbly admit that through her leadership skills and her educational background, she proved herself to be worthy of her opportunities.…

Looking forward to this upcoming year, I am extremely excited for all the opportunities for professional growth at Mayo Clinic. I expect this experience will provide the development I need to become a competent and compassionate nurse. Reflecting on my last two years of nursing school, I have learned an incredible amount that will help me this year but my learning does not stop there. I have several goals for my professional development in the four main CCEI headings: assessment, communication, clinical judgment, and safety. I expect to accomplish these goals through self- reflection and support from my professors.…

Nursing is a self-regulating profession where nurses set their own standards of practice “based on research and clinical evidence” (College of Registered Nurses of British Columbia [CRNBC], 2013), and ensures that patients receive the highest quality care possible (CRNBC, 2013). All nurses are required to meet The College of Registered Nurses of British Columbia’s (CRNBC) annual Continuing Competence Requirements as an indicator to the public that they are maintaining their competence to practice (CRNBC, 2013). Continuing competence in nursing is the continual assessment and improvement of a nurse’s ability to “use his or her knowledge, skill, judgment, attitudes, values and beliefs to perform in a given role” (Ross-Kerr & Wood, 2010). There are infinite possible patient scenarios that may come up in nursing practices along with different learning opportunities. It is important for nurses to evaluate and reflect on their actions in order to improve on their future practices. It also allows nurses to critically think about the experience, and identify any assumptions and alternate perspectives. Continuing competence helps identify one’s own strengths and weaknesses, and is a critical component in professional development as a nurse, and as an individual.…

During the second half of the semester I showed strengths by recognizing my own limits and seeking assistance/guidance, seeking out opportunities, reflecting on my own nursing practice and keeping open communication with my instructor and RN. During one of my shifts, I worked with client who wanted to change but was hooked up to a VAC. I recognized that I wasn’t educated on VACs, and was unsure as to whether I could unplug it so she could change. I sought out a RN and charge nurse to help me figure out how to do this. After being guided through the process of what to do, I was able to help the client change. I have also taken the opportunity to reflect on my own nursing practice through my RPN’s. My RPN’s have showed a thorough analysis of my feelings and questions that arise throughout my shifts. In addition, I always make sure to stay in touch with my client’s nurse and my instructor throughout my shift. I chart off at the end of each shift and give report to the nurse. I also took an opportunity to empty a Blake drain on a client who was not my own. I had the RN guide me through it, as it was my first time performing this task.…

Although theoretical preparation clearly is important, there is no substitute for the learning that takes place during clinical experiences. Clinical experience is acknowledged as being the core of nursing education. As nursing student without previews experience in mental health, I was reflecting the same attitude held by general public that mentally ill patient are dangerous, prone to violence, unpredictable, and to some degree responsible for their illnesses. Also, at the beginning of the semester, I felt unprepared, anxious and stressed before starting mental health clinical but the positive relationships with clinical staff gave me confidence and increased my satisfaction with the clinical experience. However, I found that over the course of the clinical experience and through observation and active participation that I started feeling less anxious and more comfortable interacting with the patients in the facility.…
