Reflection On My Service Learning Project
Honestly. What is the point of this? I have so many things that I’d rather be doing in my spare time than going out in the public to do some stupid service learning project. Those were the exact words that flowed through my head while the assignment was being explained to the class.
Even though I was not excited about this project in the least bit, I knew that it had to be done and it had to be done right. I was really hoping to work with kids and bring in a cool black light to show them some germs. However, I overheard another group talking about going to some daycare and that idea went out the window.
Our group came up with the idea to speak with the elderly about Urinary Tract Infections. “Perfect, How hard could talking to a group of old people be? I stated to the group.
Now that the service learning project is done I have such a

Everyone is prepared for this. Should be smooth sailing form here is what I was thinking walking in the building.
Speaking with the elders made me realize that although the older appear different does not mean that they do not comprehend what you are saying and just like every other human being there are subjects that will be uncomfortable for them to talk about. If not even more uncomfortable because back in the day when they were growing up things were a lot more personal and private than they are today.
There was a person in our group that used the words adult diapers and we all just stopped and knew at that exact moment those were probably not the right choice of words to use. However this is when my outlook of the assignment changed. On the spot those words could have came out of any of our mouths it just happened not to be me for once.
The phrase “Adult Diapers” will always be in the back of my mind every time I am with an older patient and I have the Service Learning Project to thank. I will always take a few seconds to take a step back and think about each patient or person I am about to communicate

I always discuss subjects/issues with the young people judging on their level of understanding and their cultural background. I have to be mindful of their frame of mind at the time, when communicating with these service users. I have to ensure that the language that I am using is clear, as the young people are from various parts of the country; this is to ensure that I am not misunderstood or what I am saying is misinterpreted, as if this was to occur it could have serious implications in the form of behavioural issues.…

My negative item is the adult diaper. When people think of adult diaper, they think of incontinence and losing control of their own body. Many older adults are being portrayed in the media as slow, incapable, and rely on the help of caretakers to keep them clean. Hence the use of an adult diaper. People avoid talking about adult diaper, and the media often portrays older adult’s needs to use adult diaper because they cannot help themselves. That stereotype instills fear of aging into people and many older adults dread it. However, like many other stereotype, that is simply not true. Although it is the fact that as people age their body reaction is going be slower, older adult people are still perfectly capable of living an independent life…

Investigate the two issues you chose in the above question. Use this chart to take notes as you research. Use the library, Internet, family and friends, and trusted community members. Talk to at least three trusted adults about the issues you research. These people may suggest good ideas and websites for information. One example would be your city or county government website. During my service learning I volunteered at Coker Wimberly elementary school. On tuesdays and any other day of the week that I am off I go and help out. I help out Mrs Revis second grade class by reading to the students to make sure they're prepared to take AR quizzes. I even allow them to read their books to me. I assist the students to the cafeteria and to the restrooms. When it is time for math I help them with blocks, adding and subtracting. I grade test and file paperwork for the teacher. On tuesdays the students incentive is media. I make sure they are quiet in the library, understand the work on the computer and promptly check out library books. On fridays they have p.e as their incentive. Inside the gym I participate in the games with…

    What We Dont Talk About...

What We Don’t Talk About When We Don’t Talk About Service∗ Adam Davis There is this odd thing happening: a vogue for service. Look around and you can’t help but see it: more community service, more service learning, more compulsory volunteering. Elementary schools, high schools, and colleges across the country have adopted community service programs quickly, seamlessly, and with relatively little opposition or argument. Students are no longer simply concerned with their classes or even with their clubs—now they are collecting clothes, ladling out meals, wrapping gifts, building houses, tutoring younger kids, chatting with elders, and serving the community in numerous other ways as well. And the trend goes far beyond students: young people in record numbers are applying to City Year, Teach for America, and other AmeriCorps organizations; retirees are volunteering with various service organizations; and professionals, too, at and away from work, are engaging in community service. This trend toward service, unlike many trends, is generally praised, though often in imprecise terms. Service Is Good (SIG), we seem to assume—good for those of us doing the serving, good for those of us being served, good for everyone. It has become so clear that Service Is Good (SIG) that we can demand service activity— even “voluntary” service activity—as we require classes in math, science, and the humanities. We can demand it after school or work and on weekends. We can demand it from our brightest young people, our busiest professionals, and our most experienced elders. It seems to be so clear that Service Is Good (SIG) that we do not need to question service or to talk about it; we only need to do it. It even seems that talking about service might be a problem—first, because if you’re talking about service, you might not be doing service, and second, because if you’re talking about service, you might start to wonder about its goodness. But neither possibility, I believe, is something…

In a society where individuals are interconnected like never before through the use of social media, it is still all too easy to forget about others who struggle every day from the impact of bullying. People, most often school-aged students, suffer in silence as they are relentlessly tormented, with seemingly no helping hand in sight. This issue, which is all too common in educational settings, was what I chose to focus on throughout my service learning experience in both my observations and my activities. Bullying in any of its forms, whether it be sexual harassment, cyberbullying, or its “traditional” manifestation of generalized harassment, relates directly to the topic of health and one’s physical and mental wellbeing. The impacts of bullying…

A month ago, my phone buzzed in my pocket as I sat in a meeting at work. I excused myself from the meeting and found a quiet place to answer. When I thumbed the answer button, my daughters concerned voice came over the phone, “Dad, how do you unplug a toilet?” Since she lives about a half an hour away, I quickly engaged with her in a toilet troubleshooting session over the phone. We discussed plungers, overflowing water, and cleanup. After a few follow up calls, she had sucessfully resolved the problem.…

I decided to start volunteering at the local humane society because I’ve always been really passionate about animals and wanted to start benefiting them in the community. Prior to my service I was delighted because I’ve wanted to start volunteering for years and was glad the opportunity had presented itself. Throughout my experience I learned a great deal and met a lot of new people. Even though I’ve only just started serving my time at the Fox Valley Humane Association I can truly see the difference it has made in the community.…

In today’s society, I see the lack of the younger generation not showing or giving older adults the respect that they deserve. When I was growing up, it was mandatory to show courteous, dignity and respect to those who were older. I have a problem with all of the cases where I have seen a totally different attitude from the younger generation than how I was raised. This may be due to miscommunication with older adults in today’s society. If you are among those that think this shoe may fit, wear it and know that one day you will become like that. In communicating with older adults, the younger generation should be aware of the person’s health issues, their environment, being on medications or just in the need for companionship are effective ways in helping to communicate with the older adult.…
