REFLECTION ON MEANING, USE AND HISTORY OF STATISTICS
Statistics even before came out of the daily needs of the people. From what I thought simple now and complicated in the past, statistics remained a great help to all of them. I imagined how the life would be if I were to live during the time of De Moivre, Adolf Quetelet, Sir Francis Galton and among others. I would be amazed by their works and start to love mathematics. I’d be proficient in the bell-shaped distribution, statistical techniques, percentiles, etc. I am not really into mathematics but I understand that mathematics play an important role in the lives of the people. I don’t have a choice but to love mathematics. Especially that I am a future educator, mathematics especially statistics, will help me a lot in dealing with the paper works in the class. As mentioned in the handout, statistical method has by far the most number of applications. Mathematics, engineering, social sciences make the most use of statistics. Housewives, students, policy-makers, businessmen, teachers and all other people make use of statistics everyday even in some simple activities. Statistics is the study of the collection, analysis, interpretation, presentation, and organization of data. Every day we collect information on what the weather is and analyze on how we will dress and what we will bring when we go outside the house. We will interpret it as doing on the actual thing and so we present it to other people by showing them what we do and organize the things we do. We take note of the thing that we did and create a mental list about how we will do such things in the future. It’s not just ordinary people that use statistics. There are some people, those who own large companies for example, make use of statistics. An example of that would be Mitsumi, the company near where I live. Mitsumi is a company which makes use of peripherals like cell phone cameras, lenses for DVD players and the like. They make use of statistics...
