Reflection On Meals On Wheels
I changed my service project to something that I did recently in girl scouts that I loved. For this project, my Girl Scout troop and I spent four meetings, a total of six hours, making ornaments for Alachua County Meals on Wheels. Meals on Wheels is an organization that provides meals for the elderly or people that are unable to access meals. In total we made 150 Christmas ornaments. The ornaments were given with meals during the month of December. The reason why I enjoyed this project was because I knew receiving a handmade ornament would give people who may be going through hard times, joy. For this project I was responsible for creating “pom-pom ornaments.” For this ornament, I took a Styrofoam ball and glued little pom-poms all around

I had found a problem and solved it with an incredible solution. This project was significant to me because it marked on of the greatest moments in my scouting career. The Eagle service project is one of the largest challenges a scout faces. Completing the eagle project means that you have successfully found a solution to a problem, planned it, and executed it without fail. I was able to accomplish my goal while learning how to be a leader in a project of this proportion. As the leader I learned how to put my trust into other people's abilities and use their advice to solve setbacks. This skill is something that I can use to impact my school and community in the future. Another reason why this project was significant to me is because it will be used by people for a long time, meaning that my project will impact numerous people in the community. The overall impact of my project is that the church, benefactor, now has a safe and durable space to use during baptisms. They now have easier access to the river and a large platform for the families to watch the special occasion. The deck can also be used as an outdoor classroom for the church's school; students are now able to view the river and nature around them without going near the dangerous edge. In addition, the deck is used as recreational area. People from the community can come and enjoy sitting on it for one afternoon or use it as a nice spot to hold…

I am currently fulfilling my passion as social work intern at Interfaith Ministries – Meals on Wheels (MOW) which is located on 3303 Main St. Houston TX. 77002. MOW has been around for many years assisting homebound older adults usually over the age of sixty with nutritional meals. MOW provides more than 4,300 meals in the Houston area. However MOW just recently expanded their routes to service some parts of Galveston. There are some eligible clients that qualify for additional meals such as breakfast, frozen weekend meals. I have noticed a higher population of Hispanic, African-American, and Caucasian clients, mostly in low poverty areas and have little-to-low income. There are many homebound clients that do not have social support and just…

I am honored to be considered among the superior academic students at MCC and to be applying to the National Honor Society. If I am accepted into the National Honor Society, a service obligation that I would like to propose is collecting items for the babies and mothers in the Genesis House here in Melbourne. The Genesis House is a donation run organization that not only helps pregnant mothers, but also mothers who have newborns or young toddlers. I feel that this project would make an impact on many people’s lives. Most people in our world today believe that people in the Genesis House of Melbourne are fine because they have the volunteers there to support and care for them which sadly, isn’t always the case.…

Being active in National Charity League for six years, I have had the pleasure of working with many different philanthropies, my favorite being The Tualatin School House Pantry. Operating out of the basement of a church, the food bank helps to feed families in the community who are struggling financially. While my first few experiences at the food pantry were emotionally challenging, I found them to be very eye opening. I met many people from different backgrounds, yet they all shared the same hardship, the inability to afford food for themselves and their families. Wanting to do more for the recipients, I received training to be one of the personal shoppers.…

During my junior year in high school I visited the oncology area at St. Christopher's hospital for children with the Quilt for Kids a nonprofit organization dedicated to brightening the lives of children who suffer from abuse or life threatening illnesses. Oncology is the study and treatment of tumors such as cancer. The volunteers made quilts for the kids for support and comfort during their recovery. I made two-horse stuffed animals instead of a quilt, I wanted them to hold on to something while they went to a difficult process. I made a chestnut-brown horse color, with hazel eyes, and light-colored hair. The other horse was a dun horse with tannish tint, with brown eyes and dark long hair. This experience had an emotional impact on me it…

Appalachian Service Project is about helping people and building relationships. The people who are served in Appalachia live in homes and circumstances that are difficult for me to understand. The feelings of accomplishment and fulfillment I felt when I saw the looks in the eyes of the homeowners when our work was finished was indescribable. They had so little, yet were so happy. But each year is…

The place that I decided to volunteer at was the St. Thomas Church Pantry. The purpose of this service is to get food to people who have fallen upon tough financial times. One business skill that this group needs to keep the food pantry running is marketing skills. One of the struggles that food pantries have is not getting enough food donations of items they need. So, the leader of the pantry must ask for donations of the items that they run low on. This also means that the volunteers at the Pantry must take inventory on food items to ensure that they will not run out of certain food items. Also, they have to have a volunteer schedule just like most businesses this is to ensure that at least two volunteers will be working during the two days of the week that the Pantry is…

Over the past summer I had the opportunity to go to Deep Impact in Shelby, North Carolina. Deep Impact is a mission camp that is run by The Baptist Men that gathers youth groups throughout the state to help the needy and to spread the Word of Jesus. There were different mission teams at the camp and I was placed on a construction team. On my construction team, we helped elderly and disabled people by building wheelchair ramps for them. The construction team had three supervisors, and they made the kids on the team do most of the work. We would do different kinds of work like digging out holes for posts, saw boarding, or screwing in decking boards. I really enjoyed this kind of work and it really made me feel good that when we finished, we were…

I served as a student volunteer for Hammer and Nails a non-profit organization that works to serve the community with the mission of improving the quality of lives for low-income families through home repair. Most of the home owners in Canton, Ohio faced financial hardship and could not fund the extensive repair and renovation that their homes needed and thus relied on volunteer services for help. Through my time spent with Hammer and Nails I savored learning about the families within the community and how their lives were impacted by the local volunteers throughout many years. I enjoyed helping in the office with administrative work and with home renovations through painting and carpeting. I learned that a healthy life begins at home, and a clean and well-constructed home contributes to good physical and mental health.…

Do you have an elderly senior citizen in your family? Are they capable of cooking? They probably are not. Meals on Wheels are a community service program used to deliver meals to elderly people in their homes. The Meals on Wheels Program began delivering meals to homebound elderly residents since 1989, and since that time, over 1,500,000 meals have been delivered. (“MEALS”). This program for the elderly not only delivers food, but friendship to those whose age and health has declined (“MEALS”). In 2007, Meals on Wheels was awarded with the Congressional Hunger Award for eliminating the most hunger for the frail senior citizens (“MEALS”). Meals on Wheels have some positive and negative qualities. Some good qualities include helping the elderly;…

This summer I took a trip with my church to the Appalachian mountains on a service project. The trip was through an organization called the ASP or Appalachian Service Project. The goal of this organization is to make homes dryer, safer and warmer for people in need of better living conditions. Durring my trip there we helped a family with four children all under the age of four. They had electricy but they did not have suffiecent running water. As the week progressed my team of people from my church helped fix the house. We helped this family close a hole in the side of their house made from the previous winter, we helped fix the stairs up the side of the mountain to their house and we gave their plumbing system back to them. All of the things we did made their house safer to live in. The hole that was fixed in the side of the house would cut down the amount of money the family would have to spend on keeping the house warm in the winter, The stairs we built gave them access to their house without the change of slipping down the side of the mountain. The plumbing was fixed and we were able…

As a member of group 2, introducing University District Food Bank(UDFB), I work on what does UDFB do in Seattle and why does this social issue matter in Seattle. I read a lot of articles on the topic of hunger in the United States and in Washington, trying to provide supportive statistics to speak out how serious hunger issue is. Also, I try to analyze the rhetorical usage from the Food Bank website. However, when I start working on the powerpoint, we shared on Google Drive, I find others have already done my job. At first, I just simply believe it is my problem that I don’t communicate well with my partners. On that day we meet to practice presentation, everyone seems courtesy to each. So, we always comply with the one who has suggestion. The night before the presentation, I…
