I couldn't imagine my life if I dropped out of high school. What would my parents say? Where would I live? What kind of job would I get? Watching this story I thought about the schools that my family members and friends attend , in fact I saw alot of kids in there that I know who are like the four students in this documentay, Sparkle, Lawrence, Marcus, and Marco issues that affect them like alcoholic parents, no parental guidance, deportations and fear of missing out on non-important things.
Lawrence who doesn't want help from those who care about him, and his attitude reminds me of myself because sometimes I don't want to take help from others or having an attitude with my teachers or parents because their right

During his first visit Sister Julia stated that the new school was sinking because of the roof was too heavy. According to the Post-Dispatch, Martin Luther King Junior High had been evacuated for the second time in the spring of 1989 because of sewage fumes, backed-up toilets, and sewage in the bathrooms, kitchen, and basement. Kozol discussed the topic of inequalities with students and administrators. He discussed inequalities in classes, with teachers, and with facilities. These black students are required to attend East St. Louis schools without the hope of being transferred or bussed to a better school. As a teacher stated only about 55% of the kids will graduate from school and from this 55%, maybe one out of four will go to college. As Kozol travels through East St. Louis High School, he finds that teachers are not able to teach properly because of the lack of proper materials. The science labs are outdated by at least 30 years, they lack of proper text books/no textbooks, no lab tables, understaffed rooms, etc. In this school a lot of the teachers do not care about teaching anymore and a lot of them are full time substitutes without proper qualifications. Which of course, leads to students not paying attention or not getting any encouragement or the push they need to succeed, or even care about going to, school. Kozol observed in a lot of the classrooms students sitting around talking to other student. In most cases the teachers were not able to teach, or unwilling to even try anymore. The school is so poor that it cannot even afford toilet…

They went into depth when they wrote about the different situations they encountered everyday inside and outside of the school. In one entry a student explained that one of their close friends died in a drive by shooting. The student wrote about the occurrence as if it happens often. “I’ve lost many friends, friends who have died in an undeclared war. A way that has been here for years, but has never been recognized”.…

In the article “In Defense of the Liberal Arts”, Lane Wallace gives an example of what someone could do if they drop out of college. It also explains why staying in college and earning a degree is important. I agree with the article and believe that staying in school will benefit the student in the long run, even if they don’t think it is important.…

One of the main factors that contribute to the drop out rates is the lack of support. There should be more prevention programs in place at various high schools and locations with high poverty rates. Programs like this will encourage students to work harder in their studies. According to the video, many individuals who do not attend school on a normal basis end up dropping out of high school. One way the prevention program in Bronx, prevented students from dropping out by encouraging students to attend school daily. There is a serious need, of such prevention programs in schools because this clearly demonstrates the participants of the prevention program keeps them on track to graduation and in obtaining a higher education. One thing that surprised me the most was how topics like this are not ever mentioned on the news. This topic needs more media coverage. Our society needs to be aware of such problems that exist in our society. The government needs to step in and help finance schools so that they can obtain or build prevention programs like Dr. Robert Balfanz to help build a better future. Everyone should be treated fairly no matter what someone's issues…

This article shows just how many students are dropping out of schools all across the nation, from small rural schools to big suburban schools. They focus on a town called Shelbyville, IN to show us about students who dropout and why it happens. They also talk about how America is very oblivious to the dropout rates because many schools cover up the actual dropout rate using the GED trick. They talk about how at this high school in Shelbyville they had what they call “push-out” students rather than dropout students, as they do in many other schools. They say how the school used to have the tendency to focus more on the needs of the rich kids, even though the poor students were the ones who really needed the attention and help. They say how the…

In the article The Right to Fail, William Zinsser believes that the word dropout should not always have negative connotations. Persons who are under a certain age and leave school, or drop out, are often considered failures by societies set standards. Zinsser believes these standards set by society makes failing an almost unspeakable act and that the media, through advertisements and commercials, shows successful people living an American dream, filled with happiness, not the failure associated with dropouts.…

The high school has more of a minority population and their graduate rates are pretty low. As I watched this documentary, it hit me that I am lucky to be sitting in a charter school at the moment because the kids being documented have it way worse that I do. Most of them have no economic support, which makes it even worse to get accepted and continue staying in that school. In my opinion, this was an eye opener and I enjoyed every second of the film. This movie made me appreciate every little thing I have in my life, and to not complain so much about my school, because we all do it even though we have a great school system. I personally despised the fact that most of the children in this movie did not get accepted, because it was clearly shown how much they wanted it and how much they really needed it. Charter schools are exclusive, which does not give every student the opportunity that I have. After watching this, I re-evaluated my perspective on school, and agreed to value what I…

For my entire life of schooling, both my parents and I would agree that I constantly complained about the educational systems in which I was enrolled. But when I actually take the time to think about everything I have been through, I realize that I have indeed had an excellent education. My schooling was full of opportunities and experiences, all of which contributed to the person I am today; adequate education has been an indispensable facet of my being. Sadly, not everyone has had this same privilege. And now as a college student, I am becoming even more aware of this sad fact. Looking around me in such a diverse city as Chicago, I find myself being more and more grateful. When I read Jonathan Kozol's Fremont High School, this these feelings were even more reassured.…

“Success is not final, failure is not fatal: it is the courage to continue that counts,” this is an inspirational quote by Winston Churchill, which can lead as an example to all the students in the United States that have dropped out of high school. According to dosomething.org, the U.S, which had some of the highest graduation rates of any developed country, now ranks 22nd out of 27 developed countries. Stress, low self-esteem, and poor support from family members are all responsible for leading students to dropping out of high school. However, the United States have been improving in that area and they’ve been efficiently, increasing the number of students that earn a high school diploma. Ultimately, the amount of students that have dropped…
