Reflection of My Idiolect
"Reflect on some aspects of your own personal talk (idiolect)

Including perhaps some criticisms made of it by adults"

Whilst completing this project on spoken language, I discovered aspects of my own personal speech (also known as idiolect) and the variation between people's language due to their culture and environment. Living in north London for fifteen years I have had many experiences which shapes my idiolect to what it is today. Three main factors which have influenced me the most are my family, my friends and the media such as internet, music and TV.

As a teenager myself I feel that the media has played a strong part in the influence of young teenagers, especially by the internet and TV. Often slang words such as "OMG, peng, lol, fam and convo etc " these words are commonly used on social network sites like Facebook, Twitter and MSN messenger; slang like this is becoming a vast growing trend with the click of a button a new word can be made and used by thousands of teenagers all over England.

Whilst I was growing up, TV was big influence on me and it still is today as it is portrayed in American programmes such as family guy and jersey shore etc, these particularly use slang words like "shawty and dude". This has had an impact on my idiolect as changing my accent and vocabulary is my own way to achieve this. It is also my way of converging to what everyone believes to be socially accepted.

My family has had the hugest/largest impact on my idiolect. With my parents i will often code switch between Gujarati and English. For example when coming home from school my mother will ask me "school kaasi thi?"(how was school) and "school mein kya kiya" (what did you do in school today). I would respond my say "school was okay" notice how I responded in English. There are many reasons why I code witch at home. Firstly I would speak to my parents Gujarati to show respect where as having a older brother i would not code switch and speak in slang (English).

Synopsis: The video American Tongues is a documentary, illustrating the aspects of geographical linguistics within the United States. A dialect or an accent means the words we use and how we pronounce them, and in this case the language is American English. Variations of English that result in local dialects are discussed, reasons for dialect differences are given, and attitudes about dialects are shown in the video. There are several ways that dialects form from "standard" languages. First there is accent or the way the language is pronounced. Second there is vocabulary and the different words used to describe the same item or activity. The documentary goes from the streets to the countryside; from the streets of Boston to Louisiana teenagers, from Texas cowboys to New York professionals. Overall, the movie focuses on the way people perceive others with different accents.…

There are as many different styles and variations of spoken language as there are people on Earth as language is an abundant ocean of creativity that will never dry up. The inventions of modern day technology such as the TV have meant that English spoken language is as varied now as it has ever been; you only have to flick through the TV channels to discover the differences in the language a news reporter uses, compared to that of a chat show host. This also applies to different people talking about the same subject; this can be illustrated in the study of Jamie Oliver’s and Gordon Ramsay’s unique adaptations of spoken language to suit the audience and purpose of their different cooking shows.…

Week one of Language and Literacy for Teachers has broadened my thinking about the English language, how vast it is and the different ways people communicate. The first, and most interesting topic for me that was brought up in week one was vernacular language. “A vernacular variety of language is the form of language people use in their “everyday” lives when they are not speaking as specialists of experts of any sort.” (Gee & Hayes, 2011, p. 8). Learning about vernacular language led me to think about and explore the different ways language can change depending on factors such as a social setting, social class or geographical location.…

The way in which we speak now has developed noticeably over the years from the way in which we use to fifty years ago so much so that it has almost entirely become another language. During the course of this essay i will be analysing the spoken language between both the liverpodlian teacher, student interview and the Lancastrian teenagers’ exchange of ideas by commenting on how they both use linguistic devices such as fillers, Standard English, modern slang, power and dominance; how they adapt their language to suit different situations and exploring why they do so.…

Language was not always easy to speak, write, and understand when I first moved here from India. Understanding two different culture shocks from Indian culture and American culture, was surely one of the toughest part about moving to the United States was. Everything was very different from my skin color to the way I spoke English. Every time I passed by people in the hallway, everyone would stare at me because they all knew about “the new girl from India.” Slowly as months passed by I started realizing the difference in culture, lifestyle, and behavior. Looking back before I moved to the US, growing up with a single parent impacted my view in society. My mom always taught me to be the hardest working person in the room. She always told me…

I am going to analyse an MSN conversation between two boys named ‘JJ’ and ‘Pete’ and a girl called ‘Kat22’. In this online conversation, the two boys are talking about going to a party, then one boy leaves the chat and a girl is added. During the conversation, many slang words are used, for example; ‘wagwan’ meaning what’s going on? (A greeting), ‘safe’ and ‘fam’. This is quite different to the way that other generations speak. Some people can misunderstand the meaning of the word causing conflict and occasionally may not understand words full stop. Sometimes, people use it because they see others using it and want to follow the crowd but others just gradually catch on to slang as it is often used around them causing accidental usage.…

My idiolect is intensely influenced by the individuals who reside in my house or visit regularly. This happens because I have been with them most of my life so I pick up some language techniques they use. I belong to a family of five; my mum, dad, older brother (Alex), little sister (Daniella). My aunty, whose name is Kenny, lives in my house frequently and various other aunties and uncles visit if we’re are celebrating or just to have a little catch up with what has been going on in family affairs. My family originates from Nigeria, therefore, the native language; Yoruba is spoken and integrated with the English language. No one in my family lacks the ability to converse in English fluently.…

Despite the more obvious physical differences we share amongst society, it is often our use of language that separates us from each other. Our language can reveal many things about our identity and can disclose such aspects as our nationality, culture, age, gender and even our level of education. Often our nationality can become explicit through our accent but also through our lexical choices in which we choose to use and it may even become evident that English is not our primary language and that that we have actually grew up in another country and have spoken a different language in our past. Our cultural heritage is a defining feature of our identity, contributing to how we see ourselves and how the groups we belong to identify us.…
