Reflection: My First Thanksgiving In Social Studies
The students previously talked a little bit about the First Thanksgiving in Social Studies and were excited to read more about. Going through the book walk some of the students were able to identify exactly what each photo was and the names of ships illustrated. I felt like the students were engaged and eager to learn more. During the Fact or Myth game, the students were excited to hear more. My Cooperating Teacher said my strengths were being organized and prepared to teach the lesson. She also said I related to the students well, was always respectful, and gave clear instructions. During my second lesson I did not experience any unexpected circumstances. I was concerned about reading the book out loud to the students because there were a

“A Native American Thanksgiving”, written by Beverly Cox and Clara Sue Kidwell, is an informational article including recipes, all relating to Native American culture. They begin this piece by dating back to the earliest known facts of “Thanksgiving” between the Pilgrims and the Indians. Cox and Kidwell set out to show the reader the real meaning behind this holiday. Pointing out that Americans only give thanks once a year, they go in depth about the Native American’s beliefs of giving appreciations. Indians would give credit and acknowledgment to the spirits of nature throughout the year in hopes for generosity in upcoming hunting and planting seasons, considering farming was an important part of Indian life. This material allows Cox and Kidwell…

Blue’s class she reminded them of the Bill Nye video that they had watch, and the kids remember lots of things from the video. This was a great way to get the students engaged and to help with a visual representation. She also gave each of them a chance to explain their reason and definitions with the whole class. She kept the students engaged by having them all take turns reading and highlight as they went along. Her role was to present questions for the students, who were to think about the answer and then share with one another. It was a good idea to spilt the students in to partners to discuss. In Mr. G’s he explained that the students had only been giving him work that was about fifty percent effort. He did allow for students to take out there phone and take pictures of the board to make sure they had the information. They also were very good at reading along with him and answering his questions out of the book. I think it was a good idea to get the students more engaged in the learning process, by working in smaller groups together. These are both great examples of their responsibility as a teacher to create good creative and instructive…

As a teacher dedicated to consider how children think, feel, and understand their world, I am like a good book. Like a good book, once you get started and really get into it, you start thinking about it when you are not even reading it. I want to become the main focus point of my students’ attention. I want them to always be interested in what they are about to learn, but also very excited about what is coming next. A good book helps people solve problems they might be having and inspire people to do great things both academically and personally.…

Thanksgiving represents what it's like to be an American because on that day my family does something that only happens once a year. My family gathers around the dinner table and we all pray, thank god, talk, laugh, sing and for those of us who can’t sing, listen and we eat untill we pass out. Thanksgiving to me is a time where all is right, where family comes together and we refelct on the year, the good, the bad, we talk about our plans for the future and morn our losses of the year. Thanksgiving defines being American by making my family united, and that’s what being an American is, being…

Personally, I’m going to have to say no. The painting does a very horrendous job at depicting the relationship between the Wampanoag Indians and the Pilgrims during the First Thanksgiving. The painting is very simplistic. In other words, it fails to recognize the crucial details of what actually led up to the First Thanksgiving, and what occurred afterward as a result of the Peace treaty between the Pilgrims and the Wampanoag Indians. There’s a lot more to the story of Thanksgiving. The painting only focuses on a very small piece of the whole ordeal and fails to capture the big picture of it all.…

Ever since the colonization period in the 1600s, many settlers had come to North America as a land of opportunity. As civilizations became developed in America, many will see that this hope will be realized. After the Civil War and towards the end of the 19th century, America will have became an industrial empire, creating the term “millionaires.” With the discovery of new raw materials and the enhancement of the technological era, many people took on the jobs of becoming businessmen. People such as John D. Rockefeller, Andrew Carnegie, and J.P. Morgan, invested their lives and money into creating corporations that either thrived or died. The ones who did manage to make it big, many of whom were owners of the major railroads, factory bosses,…

Take a moment and think of all the things that are in modern day lives; advanced technology, business, cars, electricity, along with many other things. Now, think back to the beginning of America when there was nothing but the land when the English settlers arrived. The trip to America and even the first few months post-arrival were very hard on the English settlers, as they had no experience, preparation, or familiarity with the land. Many of the settlers were dying, but thanks to the gracious aid of some Indians, the English settlers were able to learn and better adapt. Though the trip brought great difficulties upon the English settlers, they were able to survive, thrive, and eventually colonize various parts of the Eastern United States.…

On Monday, April 13th I taught a lesson to Ms. Ross’ fourth grade class at Hawthorne Elementary School with Ms. May. Overall, I believe the lesson went well and had a successful outcome. I was extremely prepared for the lesson with a detailed lesson plan, materials, and discussion questions all planned in advance. This was very beneficial when teaching the lesson and resulted in a smooth and effective lesson. The beginning of the lesson did a great job introducing the lesson because I asked the students effective questions to get them thinking about the topic. One way I believe I could have enhanced the introduction of the lesson even more is by getting more students involved in the discussion. After asking each question, I could have asked students to turn and talk to a neighbor and leaned down to talk to individual students, which would encourage every student to participate instead of just a few. After introducing the topic, the students participated in interactive game on the Smart Board involving measurement. This went well because the game not only got students participating but excited, motivated, and grabbed their attention. If I were to teach this lesson again, I would make sure to ask more questions while the students were playing the game in order to check that the students were not only doing the activity but also understanding it. In order to have enough time for the entire lesson, only a few students were able to play the game, which could be a negative but I believe the game was successful even with not every student participating, The students seemed to really enjoy this part of the lesson and were very engaged. It was easy to tell the students enjoyed the game because every student had their…
