The Human Services profession is an occupation where one is not limited to do just one job or one sense of duty. I discovered the profession is a more of a mission rather an occupation where one who is pursuing this career must be caring, patient, willing to set aside one own personal viewpoint and must be able to work with a wide range of diversity. More importantly, able to perform on a professional level, with the client’s best interest, despite what one may feel is justifiable.…

When I first heard about the case study I was very nervous. One because I thought we were going to present it, and two because I had never written a case study before (in all honesty I had no idea what it even looked like). Leaving a Legacy of Hope

So many people when asked what it was that drew them to this field would tell me, “I go home every night feeling good about the work I do.” Though this is a genuine and relevant answer to the question, it is not mine. I have always said that it is the people that make this work so special. What makes the population of people that we work with so incredible is that they are not caught up with the everyday way of life that you and I are. It is that freedom from conventions which sets them apart. They are not as worried about the latest fads, trends or fashions. They are people shaped through the years of their lives, filled with experience and wonder that is hard to imagine, let alone understand. They are individual’s not so much worried about “What do you think about me?” as much as, "Do you love me?" Their character and convictions are steadfast, and though they may be hardened to change, their hearts remain soft and tenable. The following essay has been written for these people, with hopes that it would inspire even a single person to take an earnest look at Oregon’s current service models for Seniors and People with Disabilities, and to keep Oregon as a premier model in which other states can continue to look to. What legacy will we leave? What hope will we inspire? My objective is to utilize this essay to answer these questions.…

Buddha once said, “If you light a lamp for someone else it will also brighten your path”. The purpose of helping is to assist others in learning to overcome and/or cope with the problems they face in every day life. Those providing the help often do so to feel a sense of purpose by making a positive impact on other’s lives. In terms of human services, helping comes from working professionals who possess the knowledge and expertise to effectively provide services to those in need. In order to better understand the helping process, we will define who a client is, the wide range of problems that clients face and the specific set of helping skills that human professionals use with clients.…

Reflective practice is something we all carry out every single day, probably without even realising it. We use reflection in many different situations and under many different circumstances, as a way of improving our own skills and abilities for different things, as individuals. Cowan proposed that learners are reflecting in an educational way, “When they analyse or evaluate one or more personal experiences, and attempt to generalise from that thinking” (1999: 18). Reflective practice allows us to look at something we have carried out and allows us to see whether or not we handled the situation properly or whether we would handle it differently if we were giving the opportunity to do it again. By doing this reflecting enables you to see how you have improved in certain areas and pinpoint areas which may need some improvement. It’s basically a way of seeing what you have learnt and perhaps shedding light on what could be done in the future. Moon’s theory runs parallel to this as he says that reflective practice is “a set of abilities and skills, to indicate the taking of a critical stance, an orientation to problem solving or state of mind” (1999:63). Suggesting that reflective practice is directly linked with the thinking you do surrounding something you…

With this I chose a game from the LSIS workshop that will help me as well to feel more confident in that area again. I also wanted to challenge my learners a different way than just questioning so I introduced a fun muscle game. I first found a great facial muscle diagram (Bodyteen.com Anatomy 2012) that I always think is a great way to see where the muscles are, seen on Appendix 1. The students do not get taught theory in my lessons however now I am teaching massage I wanted to bring in a game that will help their theory side but also how they perform there practical. I put my learners in to groups of three, they had a list of ten facial muscles, post -it notes and a pen. This was a race to write the muscles down on the post -it notes then stick them on the chosen person of where the muscles are on the face. They had ten minutes to complete the task, once their group had finished they had to put their hand up. When all the groups were finished I put a diagram up on the whiteboard and as a class and the groups we worked out the winner of who got them all right, then who got them all right and was the…

Our first SMART goal was to increase the sets or repetitions for the participants each session, but it unfortunately was not achieved. We noticed they were bored with the repetitiveness of the same routine, which brought us to devise a plan to get them better motivated. Instead of traditional weightlifting and cardio, we implemented sports equipment, such as soccer balls, volleyballs, and kickballs, and changed the workout routine a bit. Once we changed it and made a new SMART goal, we measured the progress by making sure the participants were actively motivated for at least thirty minutes of the session. We started with making sure they could stay active for fifteen minutes, and then the next session for twenty minutes, until we reached our goal of thirty minutes. Each week we saw an increase in their motivation and performance after we gave them encouraging remarks for their accomplishments in games that we took part in as well, like…

What exactly is Human Services? Human services is defined as “uniquely approaching the objective of meeting human needs through an interdisciplinary knowledge base, focusing on prevention as well as remediation of problems.”(National Organization of Human Services [NOHS], n.d) Ever since I was in my sophomore year of high school I knew that after college I wanted to work with human services in some sort of way. But being a naive sophomore, I knew nothing about the careers and the information that I did know was from the TV and the electives I took that briefly touched on this subject. So going into college and seeing that they had courses specially for students that were interested in Human Services, I knew taking this class would only further…
