No one should be discriminated by the way they look, where they are from, or the way they act. In the novel, Red Queen, written by Victoria Aveyard, a young girl lives in a society where the social classes are divided up by blood, red and silver, and reds are always discriminated. The protagonist, Mare, is red blooded but soon discovers that she has powers as if she were silver blooded, forcing her to join the royal family. Throughout Red Queen, the story’s conflict increases due to the fact that she is secretly going against the throne with the queen’s son. The conflict develops throughout the story but is not resolved at the end.
The story’s initial problem is when Mare is forced to become princess after the queen discovers she has special abilities, like the silvers. As soon as Mare meets the queen she begins to think, “She’s a Silver, I can’t talk to her that way. She could put me in the stocks, take away my rations, punish me, punish my family. No, I realize in my growing horror. She’s the queen. She could just kill me. She could kill us
When they join them, or the scarlet guard, they plot to attack the palace, but quickly after the attack the queen becomes suspicious. The queen starts to talk about the scarlet guard and claims, “‘They are a disease, one you allowed to take hold. And it’s time to kill this disease where it grows….They are Red devils, and they must have allies inside our walls’”(247). This truly shows the queen’s hatred towards the reds, especially the scarlet guard since they are battling for equal rights. This is meaningful because the queen becoming suspicious makes the situation a lot more intense because if she finds out anyone is working with the scarlet guard they will be punished severely. However, even after the she becomes leery about the workers around her, Maven and Mare still continue to support the scarlet guard and go behind the royal family’s
