Red Death Symbolism

In “The Masque Of the Red Death” the main character is shown around the castle of Prince Prospero and as he goes through all these rooms that are very lavish and well done there is a theme of sorts where each room symbolizes something. Prince Prospero begins with showing the rooms froms east to west, The first room,blue, is the beginning of the rooms and also symbolizes the beginning of life and or can be seen to symbolize birth. Next, the purple room is shown which symbolizes royalty, wealth and power. After that the prince shows the green room which symbolizes the part of life where one begins to grow and change, like in the spring when plants turn green and begin to grow so do people. Orange is the next room, which symbolizes autumn which
The second thing that Poe does to create fear is the clock of the black room. Every hour, on the hour the clock of the black room chimes and it causes every single person of the party to stop everything they are doing. This causes a silence to fall across every single room and everyone at the party. The clock causes everyone to be unsettled and give a sense of discomfort for a short period of time before they eventually shrug it off. The final event to cause fear in the store is the arrival of a never before seen guest at the party who is wearing a costume that causes people to be unsettled and uncomfortable. The costume was all red and also with a red mask. This costume caused outrage among everyone of at the party, especially the prince. The final way that fear is shown is when the red masked “person” goes into the black room and is followed by the prince, the prince attempts to attack the guest for ruining the party but as the red masked guest turns Prince Prospero drops to the ground and dies.
