Tyres of a taxi she arrived in screeched violently as it skidded to a halt. She did not pay any attention to infuriated driver, forced to stop abruptly, as she jumped out of a pulling over car. She was surrounded instantly by unbearable yelling of flashing emergency units approaching from all directions. Hot blaze that stopped her from going any further left her paralyzed with the sight of what was left over from her block of flats. All she could feel was numbness taking over her body that filled her arms and knees with concrete and by terror pinned her to the ground. Helplessly watched, battling with a blaze fire fighters. Street was unrecognizable, littered with debris of what once were life possessions of her neighbourhood. Closing stinging from smoke eyes, buried her hands in remains of interiors she could recognize and howled, listening to pledging for help cries, she could hear in a distance.
“A03, A03 to the A01 do You copy?! A03 reporting from a scene. Explosion at Duncan Street, case unknown, majority of a building collapsed, blast approximate 200 yards, flame spreading, evacuation of an area commenced, large number of casualties and injured with limited access to, A03, A03 to all units, we need some back up… do You copy?“ – shouted to hand held radio one of the fire fighters.
“You have to go there! You have to help them! “ – Screamed Beth getting up from the rubble and shaking of her office skirt – “I am begging you! You have to get them out! Why nobody is searching for survivors?! Do something, or they are all going to die!!
“Keep out please, it’s not safe for you here Mrs. We will do everything in our power to help those people. Rescue team will be here in the minute”.
She was petrified that they might not have that minute to spare. How could she remain calm not knowing what happened? Are they alive? This terrifying thought wringing her stomach, made her feel sick. Dearest Cherubs she devoted 18 years of her life to. Little boys she was
