Reconsider Columbus Day
Reconsider Columbus Day
Should Columbus be celebrated due to his “discovery” of “New World” – America Land? This is a controversial topic. The detractors of Columbus thinks he is the major factor that Native American were decimated after he “discovered” America Land. There was no need from Native American to be discovered at that time. They were peacefully live in their own way on that scenic land.

Columbus is not a hero, but he certainly is not a villain. He is the guy who steps on America land accidentally. He is the guy necessitates the need of progression of indigenous people in America land. He is also the guy who unifies the world in the first time of history.

According to Eakin’s book, Columbus is a fanaticism who tries to find Asia in order to trade with people there for wealth. Columbus’s primary purpose is to find a place that is not Latin America. He only stumbles upon the Americas by accident. His motive is pure and benevolent. The urge to explore is human nature. Columbus is driven by this human nature for sailing out of Europe to Latin America in the spite of his miscalculation. He still thinks he arrived in the India before he dies. He calls the people on the American “Indian” which is used today when we refer to Native American people in America. All of his deeds are not intentionally harmful to Native American people at that time. He is somewhat

His arrive on the America causes the following dramatic change on the America land. Many Spaniards came to the America and showed to the Native Americans the “outside” of their world. Even though Columbus indirectly decimate the Native American because he is the one who leads those Spaniards to ravage and ruin the land, he also opens a door for Native American to see that they need to improve the way they live on the land for connecting the rest whole world.

Before 1492, the people on the “New World” and people on the “Old World” had knew nothing about the existences of each other. On the

From the moment Columbus was greeted by the natives, he immediately lost all respect towards them. Their nude bodies were defined as a lack of knowledge, skill, and religion (DeWitt). Columbus wanted to spread the word of Christianity among the Native Americans and at the same time he saw a source of easy profit by enslaving the Indians. Not once did it come to Columbus mind that these lands were not his to take but rather began to rename these islands when he sailed back home he had the entitlement of being “the founder”. During his first voyage, Columbus did not do anything incriminating against the Native Americans because he simply analyzed their culture. When he sailed back to Spain, he returned with many new items as well with kidnapped…

I must admit, at the onset, that I have a pretty negative thoughts about Columbus. My teenage idealization of the man who "discovered" America was crushed when I read the text book and hearing class discussions. From the book, I learned how Columbus enslaved and murdered thousands of Arawaks and other Native American people. The New World he had once portrayed as a paradise had swiftly spun into something much darker. Columbus's actions were unjustifiable immoral, to say the very least, inhumane. However, he honestly believed that he was doing a good thing by "converting" the Arawaks. Based on the cruel historical events and the fact that he didn’t really discover America. Why should he be celebrated?…

I believe Christopher Columbus was a hero in his time, and in ours. But before I can go any further I want to say that what was right and common sense in 1492 was different then in 2011. It is unfair to say he was a villain based on standards and morals that came 500 years later. Also, another thing we forget is the world was different back then. Europe was starting its Renaissance and each country was trying to top the other in development to become the most powerful country. So, there was a lot of competition going on. Besides, the planet was not very well known. The people of the time only knew of Asia, Africa, and Europe. They did not even know the continents they were aware of very well. They were mistaken in many of their beliefs about the world that they did know. They had seriously underestimated the size of Asia, therefore thinking the world was 2/3s smaller than it really was. However, it was a time of great exploration. People were starting to map out the world, partly for trade routes. With those mistaken beliefs: the need to explore, and the Renaissance, you can see what drove Columbus across the ocean blue. I think he is hero for many reasons: he discovered two “new” contents and took the risk of crossing the Atlantic into unknown waters and defying what people said was impossible. Also he was being heroic to Spain by finding gold and killing non-Christians.…

My impressions on Columbus when i was just a young child was he helped discover the place that i lived today and if columbus didn't find this land then i wouldn't be here today. Columbus had a large role on America’s views and treatment of the indigenous peoples. While most Americans credit Columbus with finding America, (which he did not), what they tend to miss out is that Columbus is also responsible for the genocide of millions of Native Americans. This lead to many issues we have with Native Americans today, one being racism. Racism towards indigenous peoples is so a…

Some will argue that Columbus was not the first European to discover America as the Viking, Leif Ericson, probably found a Norse village on this Newfoundland almost five-hundred years earlier. They will also argue that the Native Americans discovered North America about 14,000 years before Columbus was even born. As it says in “change.org” there is DNA evidence now that suggests that some Polynesian adventurers sailed dugout canoes across the Pacific and settled in South America long before even the Vikings did. Much research has been put into this, and even though this may be true, demolishing this holiday would almost crush America as a nation.…

When asked should Columbus Day be celebrated? The answer we get is yes because we have a holiday on Monday of the second week of October. Columbus Day is the celebration of the day Christopher Columbus apparently discovered America. If I was asked that question I would say most definitely we shouldn’t celebrate Columbus Day. First, he brought disease that spread around the Americas killing 9off the Native Americans. Second, most people think that by celebrating Columbus Day we are celebrating the discovery of America, which is not true. Third, he destroyed Native Americans and their culture.…

The class material influenced my understanding of American history by giving me very graphic details about Columbus. It was never brought to my attention that he was so ruthless. All this time, Columbus Day has been looked at as a holiday that was for someone who was heroic at some point. After that reading, it’s disturbing to know that a guy who was essentially a mass murderer is recognized once a year. I feel like if more people were told the truth from the victims point of view, no one would want to celebrate this guy.…

    Why Was The Columbus Day

He wanted the land to be free of the people that were thought to be inhuman. These were the Native Americans, or as they were more commonly known during this time period, the Indians. “The innocent lives of countless Americans were lost as a result of acts of violence incomprehensible to most people. Children were left without parents. Husbands were left without wives. Sisters were left without brothers.” (Kroenke) This shows how the acts of Columbus in 1492 can be compared as equal to acts of terrorism today. He slaughtered many innocent people when he was conquering the almost defenseless Native Americans, he committed many of the acts listed above. He made it so that families were no longer together because he and the people he traveled with murdered many of them. All because the natives were considered inhuman. This can easily be compared to the Holocaust because in that circumstance, the Jews were considered inhuman and in Columbus’s case, he considered the Native Americans to be inhuman and committed genocide. “This man’s voyage initiated the first invasion of America. The terrorists came from foreign lands to the east. Highly organized and with a mission supposedly given to them by their God, the subjugated, intimidated and killed our people through acts of terror and violence not much different from the terrorists of modern times.” (Kroenke) This further proves the point that the genocide committed by Columbus and his men can be compared to acts of terrorism of this time. In this case, the article was comparing Columbus’s acts to the terrorist attacks in New York on September 11, 2001. This is considered a day of mourning today, so why is there a day for a man who committed these same crimes of terrorism being celebrated with honor today? There is controversy about this day, but nothing has been done to remove the holiday for…
