Recognizing and Avoiding Homophobia at the Workplace in the United States Matthew Robert Horton

Using data from studies, testimonies, and various types of articles from the past decade, the author will recognize the occurrence rate and impact, both emotionally and financially, of discrimination based on sexual orientation and identity -- also known as homophobia -- at the workplace in the United States. Once the urgency of the issue is established, the author, again using the aforementioned mediums, informs the reader, how to find, and then verify, working environments that are welcoming of varying sexual identities and orientations, as well as how to retain said orientation and identity in a way that does not diminish ones value as an employee -- particularly while first interviewing for and becoming acquainted with the desired working environment.

The author chose this issue because of its relevance to his personal and professional life as a gay man.

In a 2007 testimony before the Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions Subcommittee of the House Education and Labor Committee, Brooke Waits of Dallas, Texas, described the interaction that lead to her dismissal as a regional Inventory Control Manager for Cellular Sales of Texas:

I had a photo of me and my girlfriend -- sharing a midnight kiss at a New Year’s Eve party -- saved as my cell phone screen saver. One day in May 2006, my manager came into the back office to ask me a question. I was across the room sending a fax, but my manager stopped by my desk, noticing my cell phone sitting on it.
