The general argument made by Rushin in his work Give the Kids a Break is that kids need to have adequate recess time to provide them with the break and physical exercise they need. Additionally, he argues that the cut back on recess time and the general “wussification” of our over concerned society is a disservice to our children and our future. His claim that recess is important to a child’s development is strong because he suggests the many benefits and supports them with statistics, examples, and appeals to the audience of active adults who understand the benefits of recess and exercise.…

Many elementary schools have reduced or eliminated recess during the school day in an attempt to improve test scores. That has been especially true since the No Child Left Behind Act introduced in 2001. In order to allow for more instruction time for achievement standards to be met, more time was spent in the classroom resulting in something having to be cut out of the school day. In most cases, that is recess. However, doing so has not had the desired results and children have been losing out on very important aspects of their development. Having recess is vital to the development of children because it helps them to perform better academically in school, it gives them the opportunity to learn the social skills needed throughout life, and it improves their physical well-being.…
“The school schedule is a series of units of time: the clock is king...how much time do I have with my kids, is the teacher’s key question” (Sizer pg. 40). School periods are about fifty minute each and students and teacher have a few minutes to go from class to class. Mr. Sizer argues that going from class to class gives the school day a kind of restless and hectic quality and provides the students with many distractions. Mr. Seizer point is strong, restlessness and distractions seem to go hand and hand here, once the children enter the class they must be resettled and their attention refocused leaving even less time for learning. In addition, most schools have at least one class that is called a “split class”. During “split classes” the student starts their class period, then, half way through it is interrupted so they can go to lunch or attend another activity. After they have finished lunch or the other activity they then…
“About 40% of public schools have already cut, or plan on cutting recess from their school day” (Education Reporter, 1). Along with that more and more schools are now taking away physical education classes to make more time for math, reading, and writing. The main concern with taking these out of schools is that it will contribute to the rising issue of childhood obesity. Also, children benefit from short recess breaks throughout the day in many different ways. The last reason recess and P.E. should be required is that physical activity is a very important part of the development of a young child. Academics and test scores are important; however educators must look out for the health and well-being of every child. I believe that recess and physical education class should not be taken out of schools; they should be required as part of every day curriculum.…
The author introduces Playworks in the essay to demonstrate to the audience how children can be safe and have fun during their recess. The Playworks program also works toward a bully free environment and allows for all children to play together without discrimination or exclusion. Recess can either be a really good thing or a really bad thing, all depending on individual’s experience. Bornstein uses real accounts of people sharing their memories of recess. He then uses these memories to show the audience that…
Many things that kids learn are best in school, as much as humans that are social in nature, it is necessary that being socializing is not everything that many people want to learn during their kid life. Once school is over many kids are told to be quiet and follow directions every day in class. Once school is over for the day many students don’t spend time playing outside like they used to at school and at the neighborhood as the previous generations used to. This leaves the recess as the best…
Recess is a playground for debate amongst educational researchers and philosophers. In primary schools, twenty five percent of injuries will take place on the playground (Hill). Bullying and unhealthy competition are areas of recess concern and thus recess is considered a waste of academic time. Is this a valid reason to completely eliminate recess in elementary schools? Forty percent of the nation’s 16,000 schools have either already modified, replaced, or consider eliminating recess (LaHoud).…
Most students today struggle under the heavy load of countless extracurricular activities and lengthy homework assignments, all for a tiny opportunity to get accepted into the most exclusive colleges and eventually the competitive workforce. Starting school at the break of dawn does nothing but deter students from functioning at the best of their ability. In spite of multiple attempts by parents, educators, and students to adapt to schools ' early starting times, the best remedy to this problem seems to be a later school day.…
Do you think that middle schoolers should have time for recess? I don’t think that middle schools should have a set time for recess. Recess is for little kids not almost adults.…
Taking extra time out of the school day for “free time”, can be seen as a waste of time. The additional time given to students may not be used in effective ways. This is in agreement with Perspective Two which claims that giving students a “genius hour” is a waste of time because not everyone will use the time well. For example, some students do not use their time wisely in study halls. However, more often than not, students want to be productive so they will not have as much work to do at home. This ties in with the idea in Perspective Three, which argues that giving students extra free time during the day is a waste of tax dollars, and that…
Eating, eating can be hard when you don't have enough time because maybe the line is very long or maybe your lunch has to be heated and it can take awhile to heat something up. In fact, kids may have an eating disorder so maybe they eat slower so it take awhile. Also, kids love recess because it's active you can talk and you can get outside. Another fact kids may need more time a recess to get out their energy because people have more energy than other kids that why school should do MIUL. Mix it up lunch is a great style for schools maybe you should try…
Remember the good old days? When you had that very precious valued free time, known as recess. Well it's gone now right? But should it be? I myself, being in 8 grade, still in middle school, wonder, why don't we have recess? At this age feel that we need it more than anyone! Recess if fun, it is great and offers student a break from all the stress of their classes. I want recess back. Even if it is only for 15 minutes. Recess time will provide a very helpful benefit to middle school students. Research indicates that learning and memory actually improve when learning is spaced out rather than presented all at once. The obesity rate for teens has tripled. In short, kids need to be encouraged to move more.…
After working diligently all day, a chance to socialize with a few friends is exactly what you need. After going from class to class students are overloaded by work, and may even get stressed out. All that's needed is a little break during the day, to keep boredom levels at its minimum and have students performing better in classroom. What's the point in teachers teaching if students are not going to pay attention? Its better to have students performing at their best, and on top of that teachers will benefit more, and would be happier knowing they taught students valuable things, instead of raising their voice and having to resort to force to keep hold of their attention.. It is obvious that free periods would make school a much better place to learn.…
I like recess most of all, though now, it’s mostly referred to as ‘break-time’ or ‘in-between classes’. This is especially after a few hours of torture trying to figure out some tough ‘sums’ and listening to the history teacher bore on about some half-forgotten war. The relief of consuming food and drinks at the cafe-shop is really satisfying. What more, my friends are always there to provide great company and companionship. We yack on and on about nothing in particular. It is great to be among those you know well.…
