Rebuttal to Twain’s essay

Mark Twain says that the human race I cruel, and uncivilized. Unlike the animals, humans have the ability to care for those who are weak, sick, and otherwise unfortunate. In the wild if an animal is sick or weak, they are abandoned by their own species and are, ultimately, a source of food for another. The wounded are killed without a hesitation. Man has compassion, not only for our species but for the others. There are many organizations that are created to help people in need. There is the Red Cross that steps in during an emergency to provide shelter, blood and food to those who need it. There are homeless shelters that take in the homeless to shelter them from the elements.

Mark Twain argues in his essay "The Damned Human Race" that man has not ascended from the animals but rather descended from them. According to Mark Twain, the animal kingdom is more civil then human society. During the course of this essay, I will address why Twain's argument is flawed and endeavor to show that man is not, as he would have us believe, the lowest of animals. Man is, instead, accurately called the "highest of animals". Humans have the ability to reason and have compassion on the less fortunate, of both his species and others. Man is also the only species that builds upon, and learns from, the knowledge of previous generations.…

Over the course of time man has interacted with the world around him in order to find the happiest way to live. He started off in the wilderness, with nature, where he discovered God, who kept him on the right path. Man than came together in communities to attempt to help one another to achieve happiness. In his novels Mark Twain does an excellent job discussing the relationships man has had with his surroundings. Twain's most renowned and praised work, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, is coincidently also his most controversial novel. It is the compelling story of a young boy, Huck, who runs away from his drunken father with Jim, a runaway slave. Their journey takes them down the Mississippi River in hope of eventually being able to return north. Throughout Huck's adventures, the reader watches as society changes around him as he heads deeper and deeper into the South. It shows how horrible the blacks were treated before the Civil War and how little society has changed in the time after the Civil War. Another Twain novel, Letters from the Earth, shares the same theme of society. It contains an interesting collection of letters written by Lucifer, who is banished from heaven to live on Earth for a period of time. Lucifer writes to the other Archangels about the way humans live out their lives and their views on God and religion. Twain's own views on society are expressed in these letters; he writes about human nature and how the race functions in everyday life. Mark Twain's novels, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn and Letters from the Earth, critique the prosperous relationship man has with Nature, the unsteady bond Man has with God, and also critiques the rough relationship Man has with Society.…

All throughout known history humans have always been the most dominate and distinguished animal. Humans are and have been constantly learning, thinking, and deciding based on what they belief is right, wrong, or neither. This unique behavior is caused by a unique ability called moral sense, which is what enables a human to know when something is cruel and when something is kind. In the essay by Mark Twain called “The Damned Human Race,” he claims that it is our (the humans) everyday meanness, unkindness, and cruelties that make us the “lowest animal.” Humans are not the “lowest animal” because of our everyday meanness, unkindness, and cruelties. Humans are the “lowest animal” because they have a rational mind to understand…

Human beings…..who are we? Are we Gods or we are just the top of the food chain on Earth? Do we have rights to harm other nonhuman species? These and many other questions I have in my head when I see how cruel we are sometimes to each other and even harsher toward the other nonhuman beings. Personally, I treat animals with respect because I consider them to be reasonable creatures that are in many perspectives similar to us, human beings. I am confident that animals have emotions; they can feel pain and happiness like we do. As we can see this is not enough for us to consider them our “little brothers.” From ancient times, many animals are being used for satisfying human’s different needs, such as food, transportation, and materials. Nowadays, human beings use animals not only for abovementioned purposes, but also for cosmetics and medical experiments. All these experiments definitely cause harm to animals. Majority of human population believes that all these experiments are the required attribute for all pharmaceutical and cosmetics companies. They believe that these practices can prevent many people from suffering by testing all new medicine and cosmetic products on animals first. According to this I can say that animals’ sufferings caused by people became moral issue for our last generations. In my essay I will use the work of Peter Singer “All animals are Equal,” because his work covers most of the aspects that I agree with. The main purpose of this essay is to emphasize that nonhuman beings have many similarities with human beings and they need to have basis rights for life without pain. It means that human beings must understand that all species are equal…

The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, by Mark Twain, starts out talking about lying. Finn says “This book was made by Mr. Mark Twain, and he told the truth, mainly. There was things which he stretched, but mainly he told the truth”.(1) Finn then goes on to say “I never seen anybody but lied one time or another”.(1) Twain is letting the reader know upfront that this book is going to be about lying. Throughout the book Twain gives examples of different types of lies. The lies are broken into four different types: childish lies, innocent lies, vicious lies, and noble lies. Twain is trying to show that all lies are not equal.…

There are many big differences between animals and humans. Even within the different species of animals you have many differences. It is nearly impossible to compare an insect to a wolf for example. So when studying animal rights activists’ articles and media, it is hard to agree and say animals are equal to humans. Even when comparing animals to humans who are mentally ill and cannot communicate, there is still a huge difference. Humans are able to communicate with one another where animals have their way of communicating as well but it is tough to compare their way to ours. If an animal is mistreated, it is impossible for that animal to speak up for itself and seek protection. Sometimes animals find protection but this is because humans will stick up for them and act as their voice.…

Different aspects of human nature have always been a part of literary works written by writers of every era. Human beings are portrayed as compassionate, loving, caring, empathetic and concerned about society and the people around them. However, literature is also filled with the abundance of negative facets of human nature such as hatred, discrimination and cruelty. This very form of cruelty is shown in the “Adventures of Huckleberry Finn,” by Mark Twain in which Huck remarks “human beings can be awful cruel to one another”. With the help of his portrayal of cruelty, this facet of human nature is further analyzed in two thought provoking literary works, “A Rose for Emily” by William Faulkner and “A Very Old Man with Enormous Wings” by Gabriel Garcia Marquez. Human nature allows people to be especially cruel to one another, regardless of time, gender, and even economic status.…

There are over a hundred of different animal species out there and yet the cruelest animal of all is man. Man has a very manipulative mindset that animals could not even begin to comprehend. Animals physically hurt their prey, while humans hurt their own kind mentally and physically. We watch TV shows such as Criminal Minds and Dexter that show how cruel one person can truly be. We watch those shows for entertainment, but what we fail to comprehend is that there are people out there who are really just that cruel. Friedrich Neitzsche said it best when he quoted “man is the cruelest animal.”…
