Rebel without a cause

Sitting in the office with his parents, grandmother and the police officer, Jim seems uncaring and unwilling to listen to his parents. All his parents want him to listen to what they have to say. “You can’t protect me,” Jim says to his dad as they argue with the police officer. Jim has a hard time answering a “simple” question. Frank, his father, is puzzled as to why all the things he has given Jim and love are not enough for him. What Jim’s parents are unable to recognize is that they do not understand what Jim has gone through. They cannot comprehend that Jim cannot be bought with items and that he really needs them to show they care. Jim’s dad is certain that he buys Jim things but he questions whether he gives him love. Jim with in the first couple minutes displays however teen-ager feels “you are tearing me apart”. Rebel Without a Cause allows a parallel between teenage rebellion in the 50’s and teenage rebellion now. Jim rebels against not only the law but as well his parents in the first scene. His father says drinking every once in while isn’t the worst thing while his mother states that it is not acceptable to drink. This view of mixed opinions shows a typical argument in teenage life. Mom says one thing dad says another, which do you listen to? If you choose Dad you defy Mom, if you pick Mom you defy Dad. Parents force children to choose a side and pit their children against their spouse. Even for parents that aren’t divorced children still have to pick a side and stay loyal. Jim’s parents put a lot of pressure on Jim. They don’t understand the stresses for teens. Rebel Without a Cause is allows parents to have an insight into the struggles teens face. Many of the struggles in these teens’ lives have escalated. I’m sure my parents watched this movie when there were younger and felt like they could relate to how they felt.
