Reasons Why Smoking Is Bad for Your Health
Reasons why smoking is bad for your health
Take a good look at the following: tar, carbon monoxide, ammonia, nicotine, arsenic, acetone, cadmium, benzene and formaldehyde. The substances that make up a cigar or cigarette are toxic. Still people are willing to spend money on this dangerous habit. It’s obvious that smoking is bad for you but not many people know the reasons.
The phrase “smoking is hazardous to your health” has truth to it. The main reason why smoking is bad is because of lung cancer. A lot of people stop to think that lung cancer is the only disease that comes from smoking but there are other cancers that smoking can cause. The cancers that come from smoking are mouth, throat, esophagus, larynx, pancreas, stomach, kidneys, bladder, cervix, uterus and acute myeloid leukemia (blood cancer).
It doesn’t stop there. Smoking can cause fatigue, stroke, cordinary lung disease, heart disease, reduction in blood circulation, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and many other diseases. Coughing is a sign of a breathing problem smokers have. Women should not smoke during pregnancy because it will harm the unborn child. It also harms people around you. Called secondhand smoke this secondary condition is just as toxic as smoking itself. It can cause breathing problems, cancer, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and other respiratory problems. It will also affect pregnant women and the unborn child.
If looks could kill then smoking does exactly that. Smoking also affects a healthy look on the outside. Smoking gives people who smoke an odor on their clothing and hair. The smoke also gives an odor to people around them. It gives smokers ashtray breath. Teeth will fall out and turn yellow or brown. Skin will turn yellow and cause scars. Wrinkles will appear on their face sooner than expected. It wrinkles arms and body. Bags will appear under their eyes. Hair will thin out. The chances of getting psoriasis, a skin condition, will increase when smoking. It contributes to stretch marks and a flabby tummy. It also turns off friends that don’t smoke.
Taking a gamble on your life and everyone around you just to feel good for the moment is not worth it. Whatever the reason may be it should be dealt with head on instead of smoking.
Argumentative Essay: Disadvantages of Cigarette Smoking
Everywhere, we see people smoking. It has become a daily necessity to smokers so it is very difficult to control. People thought that things are easy to say but difficult to act upon. This perspective is in the minds of most cigarette smokers. They said that whenever they try to quit smoking, they struggle very hard to control their craving for it. Based on statistics, average smokers temporarily stop smoking but after one year, they begin to smoke again. Although producing cigarette “helps” the economy of rural communities and there is no adequate law enforcement to change the behavior of millions of people but force to control smoking (civilliberty.com), cigarette smoking should be banned in public places as well as in their homes because (a) the negative effect of smoke to non-smokers who inhaled it is greater with 70% while only 30% to the smoker (b) the cost of buying it contributes to poverty and (c) the deterioration of the earth is caused by it.
It cannot be denied that people who smoke have higher risk of acquiring so many diseases than people who do not smoke and are unable to inhale smoke from any user. People care less about this because they are not feeling these diseases but rather, they feel pleased. They only get these diseases when they are older. When constant smokers are in their favorites, their complexion changes, they get out of breath easily, their hair becomes damaged and they have high risk of lung cancer, cervical cancer and heart diseases (Daniels, 2003). This effect is just the 30%. All of these negative effects are doubled to the second hand smokers for they receive the 70%. They acquire these diseases much faster than the actual smokers (“Quit Smoking”). Though people have the right to destroy their own bodies, they are not allowed to destroy others’.
Another argument is that it brings greater cost to the people in the community. They said that many factory workers will lose their jobs if they ban cigarettes, but the fact is, there is greater cost when they continuously buy these addictive products. Instead of saving money, which should be used for buying their basic needs, their salary decreases repeatedly by using this product. The cost of buying cigarettes is greater than the actual salary workers are getting through producing it. Thus is not really helping them, rather it even contributes to poverty (worldbank.org).
Lastly, it contributes to earth’s destruction. By using cigarettes, the smokers are contributing t global warming. The smoke from cigarettes contains carbon monoxide. These carbon particles are being trapped in the ozone. Carbon is unable to pass through the ozone so it bounces back to earth while emitting heat that causes global warming. This is also the reason why we experience weather disturbances.
Disadvantages of cigarette smoking s such as giving bad health effects to second hand smokers, causing poverty and contributing to earth’s deterioration out wage its benefits, therefore it should be banned. These damaging effects could be prevented through alternatives such as smoking patches, nicotine chewing gums and hypnotherapy (hubpages.com). Some say that it seems banning cigarettes is a practical impossibility but it is true that if there’s a will, there’s a way.
The Impact of Smoking
The current problem with smoking in today’s society is that its not only killing peoples wallets its literally killing people themselves. In many cases around the globe older and younger men and women are dieing from lung cancer because in fact they are smokers and the tobacco companies could care less because they are making money. Smoking causes emphysema in the lungs which is a build of tar in the lungs from the chemical Nicotine found in cigarettes. Dictionary.com deffine’s smoke is the visible vapor and gases given off by a burning or smoldering substance especially the gray, brown, or blackish mixture of gases and suspended carbon particles resulting from the combustion of weed, pent, coal, or other organic material. So the real issue with smoking in the end is that its killing people in today’s society but there’s one point they can argue its there choice to smoke or not to harm themselves or stay healthy by not smoking. In return cigarette companies have created a new type of electric cigarettes that give the same effect but just don’t contain the harmful chemicals. Many products have been created and organizations to help smokers quit but cant simply reach out and connect with tobacco users they have patches people put on for approximately 3 weeks and it declines their need to smoke. It is up to the people to decide if they will smoke or not but its up to the tobacco companies to provide a product that will satisfy there customers and not only keep them safe but keep them loyal. Unfortunately they have not stayed loyal to a healthy product and this is a growing issue today.
Smoking is the number one cause of lung cancer in all people who smoke. The issue with smokers now today is that people want to sue tobacco companies for the unlawful killing of their closest family members. When in return it is in fact their choice to smoke and cause harm to their bodies ending in brutal court cases. Smoking kills so many people in fact that...”Every year, smoking kills more than 276,000 men and 142,000 women through smoking-related diseases, including lung and other cancers, heart disease, stroke, and chronic lung diseases such as Emphysema”(Source 5 pg.1-2). The problem with today’s smokers is they become easily addicted to cigarettes which in return give off negative effects because they contain chemicals such as benzine, ammonia, tar, nicotine, acetone, and carbon monoxide. Over the last 60 years smoking rates between mena and women have varied, ”While smoking rates have fallen among women since 1965--33.9% of women were smokers in 1965, as compared with 20% in 2004--teenage girls and young women have been lighting up at an alarming rate since the 1970s”(Source 5 pg.3). What medical experts and scientists at tobacco companies have to take into effect for women is that if a woman being pregnant is still smoking is what those harmful chemicals can do to the child. Another possibility with smoking while pregnant is that it can cause SIDS or sudden infant death syndrome, when being a mother to a baby introduced to smoking u can also give nicotine to the baby through breast feeding and if your smoking while pregnant it could cause a low-birth weights.”The tobacco industry spends 11 billion dollars annually in the U.S. to advertise and promote its products, including print media Advertising(cigarette ads are banned from television and radio); distribution of free samples, cents-off coupons, t-shirts and other giveaways; movie product placements; cultural programs; donations to a wide range of national and local organizations; and political contributions to elected officials”(Source 5 pg.4). Second hand smoke has a great economic effect on the economy that in Source 4 pg.2-3 its says “Secondhand smoke imposes significant costs on nonsmokers and society, according to recent Society of Actuaries(SOA) study that concluded the annual cost of excess medical care, mortality and morbidity from secondhand smoke exposure in the U.S.mis approximately 10 billion”. Now what we have to take in effect from smoking is that it puts a big hole in our pockets because not only of product costs but media medical care for those injured and other indirect costs like lost wages. We spend to much on advertising something that’s not even good for the people in our nation it slowly progresses in killing the lungs, heart, liver, and kidneys; we should be more focused on issues like terrorism in the U.S. and Health-care. There are different types of cancer to and each has its price like lung, cervical, other effects may include coronary heart disease, chronic pulmonary disease, and low birth rates all coming to a wopping 4,982 Million(Source 4 pg.3).”The effects of prenatal exposure to second-hand smoke on mental development are exacerbated in children who experience socioeconomic hardships, such as substandard housing and inadequate food and clothing, during the first 2 years of life, according to a new study”(Source 3 pg.2-3). Prenatal smoking can cause many negative effects not only to the mother but the baby as well even possible death, its a fear amongst many pregnant women but many of them straight quit before the first two months. We also have to take in effect that medical costs could come out of the birth if any illness or difformities.”Cigarette smoking is the most preventable cause of illness and death in the United States.’A large number of Americans smoke cigarettes, and each year more than one million children and adults start smoking cigarettes”(Source 1 pg.2-3).”Cigarettes are filled with poison that goes into the lungs when you inhale.’Coughing, dizziness, and burning of the eyes, nose, and throat are early signs that smoking is harming you”(Source 1 pg.3). Smoking can also cause other negative effects like heart and blood vessel disease, lung disease, chronic bronchitis, and gastrointestinal disease’s other problems could include bad breath, smell of clothes hair and skin, sore throat, stained teeth, and a higher risk of bone fractures like your hip spine and wrist. Overall its bad for you in many ways its a threat to you, your family, your money and even possibly your life?
There are many debates on where people can smoke when they can and what type of methods are allowed. For example just straight up cigarettes, chew, dip, or electric cigarettes. Many laws have been placed on public properties where the government has declared it illegal to promote, consume or part take in anything smoking. In New York state smoking is prohibited in basically 85% of all public places these include government buildings, private workplaces, schools, child care centers, Health facilities, and most restaurants and bars (Source 8 pg.1-3). It seems pretty natural that we prohibit smoking from all these place because they could be distractions to work and buisneses and cause trouble for the smoker and those around them what if someone has asthma? Most of these place even though prohibit smoking have designated smoking areas where people can smoke away from other non-smokers. Penalties can be enforced on any persons with failure to comply with the provisions the designated area has established, in a year the total revenue of all cigarette incorporated sales is 958,466,000. One example could be the illegal sale of tobacco products to minors, or selling Bidis which have illegal wrapping leafs included in the paper, and other provisions like Internet sales containing illegal substances all of these can possibly give the seller a fine. If a whole store department is inclined to sell tobacco products they must first obtain a liscence from the Department of Taxation and Finance but they can be suspended or revoked if caught or accused of any suspicious narcotics or sales to minors(Source 8 pg.8-9).
Over the course of sixty years many people have had incidents with the tobacco companies and their products on how they have unlawfully killed their closest friends and relatives. In that state causing these people to sue and create famous cases on the dangerous effects of smoking and the total and utter blame of the killing of the companies consumers. This can go both ways though it was their choice to smoke but it is the responsibility of the company to establish the negative effects that could possibly partake in the health of the Consumers. In the court case “Philip Morris USA v. William’s” “James William died of lung cancer at the age of 67 after life spent smoking 3 packs of Marlboro cigarettes per day.’His widow sued Philip Morris, the maker of Marlboro cigarettes, alleging that the company had engaged in a deliberate, wide-spread campaign of misinformation on the dangers of smoking.’The jury found for Williams and awarded her 821,485.50 in compensatory damages and 79.5 million in punitive damages”(Source 6 pg.2). They awarded Ms.Williams because the tobacco company had not leagally and intentionally put a warning of any effects on Marlboro cigarette boxes because their just looking to make sales and the tobacco companies in fact are not concerned with the health of its consumers. In another court case “Olympic Airways v. Husain”. “Abid Hanson was allergic to second-hand smoke.’On an Olympic Airways flight, he and his wife Rubina Husain, sat in non-smoking seats.’However, because the seats were to close to the smoking section, Mrs. Husain requested she and her husband be moved.’Her request was denied twice, even after the smoke began bothering Hanson.’Hanson died during the flight.’Husain filed suit in California federal district court.’She sought damages under Article 17 of the Warsaw Convention, which allows damages recovery for international travelers for accidents on airplanes.’The district court agreed that Hanson’s death was an “accident” as defined by the convention and awarded Husain 1.4 million”(Source 7 pg. 2). In the turn out of this case i believe the widow of Hanson was right to sue the company because the employees of the airway were to careless to care about pre-existing health conditions that could possibly harm someone, in this case a man died. The connection between these court cases and the tobacco companies that sell harmful products to not only the consumers and the people around them is that they could careless about the sate of people’s health they just want to make a profit.
Smoking has had many problems with people’s health state and the well being of others. So the government has created certain agencies that would otherwise help the people in a situation that involved Smoking. These agencies protect not only the health of the people but they provide support for those in need and they give stability to all who look to quit and other options if a person is struggling. Some of these agencies include the ATF, AHRQ, the IHS, and NCI the National Cancer Institute particularly pertaining to smoking and the effects of long exposure to nicotine and other harmful substances in cigarettes. One of the most important agencies is the NCI- National Cancer Institute because it directly deals with the cause and harmful effects of cancer from smoker patients.
