“In the United States today, there is no more certain investment than a college education”(Carnevale and Melton). Education has always been a major component of American society. One can only go so far without an education, and the more education and knowledge someone has, the better their chances of being successful. Some people believe a high school education is enough, and it is, enough to land a job at a fast food restaurant. I speculate they feel this way because they feel school is not for them, or maybe they just do not want to go far in life. To get far in life people must go above and beyond, and learn things that others do not know to make them stand out in job interviews. College helps develop skills that are necessary for life, and gives them an education that will enhance their future; and despite its few drawbacks, college is worth it.…

Sometimes high school doesn’t really prepare students for college because they never get a realistic view of life. Even in high school you’re sheltered and teachers constantly remind you of assignments. Professors won’t waste their time reminding a student of their assignments. You receive a syllabus and they expect you to be aware of all the readings and upcoming assignments. Many turn to the social scene when work is too hard.…

“By far, though, the most common reason for teens leaving school is poor performance.”(Stewart). Some students do not like school in general, or the school he or she is attending. Many are failing, getting poor grades, or he or she just cannot keep up with all their school work. Some do not get along with teachers and/or other students. Also, he or she might get married or get pregnant. And, of course, drugs or alcohol are problems that play a major role in the dropout rates. Some factors that may lead to dropouts are: “External locus of control (i.e., being in agreement with others' perceptions -- believed or actual -- of their individual ability, worth, or value), low self-esteem, at least one disability (e.g., ADHD, learning disabilities), Poor peer support, depression or other emotional problems, early sexual activity or promiscuity, substance abuse.”(Focus Adolescent Services). Whether the issues are with the…

Thinking about many issues in today’s society, there are many reasons an individual would drop out of school such as pregnancy, family concerns, and individual reasons. Most people know that education is important however, there can be many circumstances and/or situations that could prevent a person to drop out of school. One reason that came to mind was pregnancy. With me being a mother, I know the hardships and the problems that came come about after having a child. If a parent does not have a good support system as well as some financial help, then this could cause a parent to drop out of school to take care of their child. Another reason for a person to drop out of school would be family concerns. Meaning, if a person’s relative becomes sick and there is no other person to take care of them then one may drop out of school in order to take care of that relative. Another reason I feel that could cause a person to drop out of school is that the school is not addressing their needs or if the person feel being in school is not helping their situation. Some people have to have special attention or needs in school and if the school is not addressing them, then it could cause the person to fall behind in their studies. From all of these reasons, there are many effects that are created from a person dropping out of school. One effect is that it increases their chance of not being able to find a good job. Another effect for not attending school could be isolation. In other words, if a person does not graduate with their peers they may begin to think negative of themselves and then may isolate themselves from friends and family because they do not feel that they are “good enough.” Overall, there could be many more causes and effects of dropping out of school. I just chose to discuss the…
