Reading Strategy Activities
Reading activities for emergent readers can be challenging and fun at the same time. The reading activities can be used before, during and after the story. There are many resources and ideas to make reading fun: word sort, KWL Charts, pictures, story wheels, PowerPoint presentation, graphic organizers, discussion Prompters, whiteboard retelling, readers theater, journaling and draw your favorite part of the story.
Since I am a kindergarten teacher, most of my readers are emergent and I need to use non-writing strategies to help foster interest in literacy—one of my favorite is “abc summarizing.” Reading Strategy Activity: ABC Summarizing
Materials
A list of alphabet written vertically
IPad/Apple TV.
A list of questions
Pencils
Crayons
Blank journaling paper
Procedure:
This activity is used as an assessment and to summarize after the story is read to the students
Have a typed alphabet list, vertically leaving space to write down the student’s answers.
Compile questions that follow the alphabet.
Project the list on the IPad/Apple TV.
Review the story with the students.
Ask students the “B” answer question. It can be a phrase of sentence beginning with that letter of the word that is related to the topic.
Then one with a “C” answers and so on, except for the vowels.
First group breakout session: When the group has completed all the consonants, divide the students into groups of 5. In the groups they are to illustrate the words associated with the story that starts with the vowels: A,E,I,O,U. You may need to help with the “U”
As the student start to discuss the story, they will find more than one answer for each letter.
Some letters are difficult, be creative: Xtraordinary, for example.
When the alphabet list is completed, bring the students back in the circle and have them discuss

As looking through Box 4.7 in my textbook, I came to what for me would be the most useful research-based practice is developing reading skills and strategies in children. If a child does not possess any good reading skills, this child will not want to read. Developing these literacy skills will help them to achieve their reading goals. I believe all four of the shared reading strategies are extremely important to use in a classroom for a child’s reading success. As a teacher, I would use all four of them. But if I had to pick one I would introduce, talk about, and read a new story. As our book says, “there is no better way to create a love for books in children of all ages than by reading aloud” (Vecca, Page 127). This will also help them appreciate literature more “and build absolute strong concepts about reading and writing” (Vecca, Page 127). I work in an elementary school; I know how important it is to read aloud to children and on a daily basis. It helps to build their imagination and develop their own ideas and even begin developing their critical thinking skills. I also believe that it gets children involved with the book, especially young children. I believe to develop a love for reading, in turn to benefiting the student in the long run. Asking them before beginning the story, what do you think this story is about? Proceed to ask questions about the story during and after is another way to get them involved in the reading. If they know that questions are coming, this may get them to pay attention during the story more often..…

This paper will explain how to incorporate the SIOP lesson plan for Literary Arts at the 5th grade reading level which can be found at the completion of the paper. It takes into account the language acquisition stages of development when presenting the lesson. The standard being followed for the lesson is reading, analyzing and interpreting literature. The content objective is from the Pennsylvania State Academic Standards which states, “students will be able to compare the use of literary elements within, among texts including character(s), setting, plot, theme and point of view”. The language objectives chosen to align with the content objective were taken from the Pennsylvania Standard Aligned Systems which states, 1) “students will effectively use language in a group setting of their peers to verbally communicate information”, 2) “students will be able to identify character(s), setting, plot, theme and point of view”,3) “students will be able to retell the story using key vocabulary as a guide” and 4) “students will listen for context clues to appropriately identify definitions of new vocabulary”.…

During my weekly readings I start by previewing and scanning information. I read titles and the beginning sentences to get a brief description of what it may be saying and realizing if I know the information or not. I take notes from each section and review the information throughout the week. I highlight information I believe to be important and useful towards discussion questions and assignments and or exams. Also I find a nice secluded area that way I can focus all of my attention towards my readings and fully understand what I am reading and apply it when needed.…

Another strategy is Social stories. Social stories are short scenarios written for students to teach them appropriate behaviors in specific situations (Shepard & Linn, 2015, p.298). The following format is usually presented by is first the main character is introduced, second the problem is identified, third the skill steps are outlined, and fourth the problem is solved through the skill (Shepard & Linn 2015, p.299).…

Aims: The aim of this assignment is to demonstrate and plan a story to read to a group of children aged 2 and half to 4. I chose this age group because this is the group I work with on a daily bases from 9:30 to 12:30 five days a week. I am picking a story called “Oh Dear” by Rod Campbell who is a Scottish writer and illustrator of several popular children's books including the classic lift-the-flap board book “Dear Zoo”. As it is a story that helps the children with learning the different animals on the farm and also encourages the children to use their imaginations as they lift up the different flaps in the book to see what is behind them. Which Maria Montessori says “Imaginative teaching materials are the heart of the process”. All of Rod Campbell’s “books have simple text often with repeating phrases which is ideal for pre-readers” and will also Help the children with langue and intellectual skills. “The child proceeds at his own pace in an environment controlled to provide means of learning” -Maria Montessori. this book also helps the children physically as they have to get up to lift up the flaps on the book “movement is therefore the essential of life education cannot be conceived of ad a means to moderate or worse to inhibit movement; it should only function as an aid to a better expenditure of energy whilst allowing it to develop normally” -Maria Montessori pg 102 discovery of a child. “The aim of the children who persevere in their work with an object is certainly not to “learn”; they are drawn to it by the needs of their inner life, which must be recognized and developed by its means.” – Maria Montessori pg 120 discovery of a child. To develop their attention spans…
