Reading Strategies Worksheet

Identify two reading goals, one short-term and one long-term. * Long-term reading goal: Read a 500 page book and extend my vocabulary. * Short-term reading goal: Read a 350 page book in a week.

Write a 100- to 150-word response to each of the following questions:

How do you currently approach the weekly readings in the course?
The first thing I do is check my syllabus to see what reading I need to get done so that I can complete my assignments, once I have identified them, I make sure that I am not disturbed with phone calls or emails, and lock myself in the quietest room in the house.
I will read 2 or 3 paragraphs at a time and summarize it in my notebook with my own words, once I am done, then I would read the entire chapter in the book again and make sure that I am covering the main points of the reading in my summarizing.

How might you incorporate three of the suggestions covered this week into your study time?

I already use some of these techniques, before I even start reading, I always skim through the book to see what topics are in it and know what I am about to read. Every time that I am about to read a textbook, I make sure that I have a highlighter, to highlight the most relevant parts of the book and a notebook to take notes for myself about what I am reading or summarize a paragraph. It is time consuming but at the end very beneficial, for me anyway.

How might this plan help you accomplish your reading goals?

I think it will help me a lot by sticking to these simple rules when it comes to reading, that way my reading and comprehension of a book will be faster and effective; by having these skills it will also allow me to extend my vocabulary, retain information better and for a longer period of time, and eventually will help me accomplish my reading

Describe the reading and comprehension strategies you will employ. How will these help make you a more effective reader? The reading and comprehension strategies that I will employ are marking and reading comprehension. Some other strategies I will employ are vocabulary skills such as using context to determine the definition of words and writing down unfamiliar terms. Utilizing marking helps me to better highlight and outline key points for better understanding. Reading with comprehension helps me to better focus and concentrate on readings. I approroach this week’s reading by printing everything out so I will have all course work and chapters in front of me. Then I read the entire chapter taking note in my own word so I can understand them better. When I have all my notes and key headings marked out, I read the assignments to see if I read the answer. Sometimes I’ll read the chapter over again to make sure I didn’t miss anything important in my notes. I even reread my notes a couple of time to make sure they make sense, but before I do any type of finial paper I search the library to find more info if I quite don’t understand.…

When you were younger did you ever take a minute to think about how you started to read and write? What made you decide to pick up that pen or pencil and just jot down your feelings, your surroundings? Perhaps it was for school because you were "made" to write and read for the class or reading and writing were in your nature. However reading and writing for some people were never easy: they took motivation, dedication, being independent and possibly even teaching themselves. Fredrick Douglass and Malcom X are classic examples of famous writers who struggled with both reading and writing. I would like to focus on one of the main reasons for their success, which was being self-motivated, which is a key element.…

In my own education, the reading activities that have had the most effect on my reading have varied. During my primary years, the strategies that we now call direct reading instruction helped build the foundational comprehension and vocabulary skills needed for reading more complex texts in college. While reading, I use context clues to try and understand any unknown vocabulary words. If this strategy does not work, I use my computer to look up synonyms for the word and re-read the sentence by replacing it with a word I understand. Additionally, I reread the entire paragraph with the synonym to derive the meaning of the concept or topic.…

I currently approach the reading in the course very cautiously. When reading any of the material in or out of class, I take my time. It is important to do so because by going to quick, there is a chance of missing some of the material. By reading slowly I can assure myself that I have better chance of taking in more information. Also by removing myself from any distractions, I can concentrate harder on the things that I am reading. Preparing for my reading sessions in advance helps to optimize my chance of greater concentration on my reading materials.…

Skim the textbook first, even though the assignment is on a set page, skim trough the chapter, look at titles, sub titles, heading, pictures, first and last paragraphs to get a general idea of the topic and as a result put you in a better place to answer the question. Take notes on what you are studying. The idea is to summarize the main idea so it's much easier to make reference to weather studying for a test or doing an assignment.
