Reading Specialist Challenges
I believe that a reading specialist will face numerous challenges, however at the same token; the challenges should motivate the reading specialist to work harder and sharpen their craft. As a reading specialist in my district that supports Title 1instruction, I believe some challenges I will face is a lack of resources. Although, some Title 1 schools have access to available resources, most don’t. I know without the right resources, the teachers and the students will not receive an accurate amount of support in reading comprehension, however with that being said, there are multiple grants that are given to Title 1 schools that can bring the proper materials into the classroom. I think the next challenge will be reading comprehension deficiency. …show more content…
It may be harder to produce parent involvement in assisting the students with homework support and etc. In spite of this, as a reading specialist, I will encourage and bring awareness to reading through literacy night events where the parents will learn how to increase their child’s reading comprehension through the education of enjoyable activities, lessons, and games that will be provided by me, teachers, administration, and school staff. Furthermore, the literacy night will offer tutoring for students and homework assistance tips for parents. The literacy night, in addition, will provide each parent with a free library card application to our school’s local

A person who faces such challenges when it comes to learning how to read can best tell his or her story on the success of reaching such an accomplishment. Having someone like that to speak can be, and inspiration to those who are willing but yet lack the desire to learn. It is necessary to give those in need a role model who was once just like them but was able to reach their educational goals (Belzer, 2002). With the help of those individuals who face adult literacy, they can provide a service to educators on the best way to teach…

In the article “Their teacher can't be an app: Preschoolers' listening comprehension of digital storybooks”, Kathleen A. Paciga, discusses the effects that digital storybooks can have on children from low income families or families where the parents may have lower literacy or in which English is not the parents first language. Paciga looks at how children at risk of reading failure aren’t necessarily not listening to their teachers or not trying, but at how they may just not have the same availability of someone to read and practice with them at home. Due to this, she also studies the effects that digital storybooks in the home can have on reading skills in these families. In this article review, I will note the important findings and correlations between students at risk for failing and the…

In the video segment, Getting to Know Your Students (2011), Dr. Almasi states that it is important that teachers get to know who each student is as a person. Therefore, at the beginning of the year I assessed my students’ non-cognitive abilities by using an assessment tool called the Elementary Reading Attitude Survey (ERAS) (McKenna & Kear, 1990). I found that many students (from both high and low groups) enjoy getting a book for present and starting a new book. Both groups also stated…

I currently approach the reading in the course very cautiously. When reading any of the material in or out of class, I take my time. It is important to do so because by going to quick, there is a chance of missing some of the material. By reading slowly I can assure myself that I have better chance of taking in more information. Also by removing myself from any distractions, I can concentrate harder on the things that I am reading. Preparing for my reading sessions in advance helps to optimize my chance of greater concentration on my reading materials.…

Six years ago, I walked in to my oldest son’s school eager to participate in their celebration of reading, a week long hiatus from regular school activities in which the children simply read books all day. Parents and members of the community were invited in to read aloud as well. This was the first year my sons were in a public school, and I was so excited to discover that the school district and I shared a very important priority: the love of reading. My son and I had just finished reading The Giver, by Lois Lowry. The book had a profound effect on both of us, eliciting thoughts and insight into the values of our society and the cost of conformity. This was the book I…

Literacy is a major part of our daily lives it’s a way we read, write, and communicate effectively. Literacy also enables individuals to interpret and discern the many aspects in our world. Without being able to read or write will limit opportunities like jobs. However, not everyone in our world can read or write. In order to become literate, we must educate ourselves and our youth while they are young. In fact, when I was in first grade, I was unable to read effectively or spell correctly until I was in the fifth grade; although, the process was tedious, but the outcome was worthwhile. I learned a lot of information through my path to become literate. However, I was not able to become literate alone. I was helped along the way by great teachers,…

The importance of reading is often taken for granted in today’s society. Many children who don’t get the opportunity to read due to low income face the challenges of keeping up with school work. The goal of this paper is to present a plan for a book drive for Lincoln Middle School, a low income middle school in Gainesville, Fl. A problem that many schools may have is trying to find the money to provide books that the kids will be excited about instead of boring textbooks or old books that are falling apart. This book drive will help to increase the literacy rates of children who are struggling in school. A book drive can help to motivate children to read more and introduce them to how fun reading can be. Our goal is to get children on the right track to help them succeed later in life. By introducing children to reading and its importance now, it reduces the risk of them dropping out of school and ending up unemployed and on the streets. According to the National Center for Family Literacy, Research Facts and Figures, “children who lack early exposure to reading struggle academically, tend to suffer from low self-esteem, and are at much higher risk of substance abuse, teen pregnancy, and delinquency.” Having parents that can’t read increases the chances that their children will also struggle with reading, thus continuing the cycle of illiteracy (Page Ahead Children’s Literacy Program). Not having the luxury of reading or being read to as a child can cause these problems. Our solution is to provide books to these students to stop these problems. According to the Page Ahead Children’s Literacy Program website, “reading aloud to children is the single most effective parent practice for enhancing language and literacy development” (Page Ahead Children’s Literacy Program). Simply reading to a child can have a big impact on their literacy development and later on their academic career. According to an…

I would like to mention that for my parents, especially for my dad, reading has always been a favorite hobby. Partly due to this fact, I have always received positive emotions while reading. If both of one of the parents often read, the likelihood that their child will want to receive positive emotions from this activity is very high. On the other hand, if parents do not read but require a child to read too much, the reading can become a field of resistance between the child and his or her parents. Reading has always been an easy and pleasant leisure for my parents. I am immensely grateful to my father who was an influential literacy sponsor and still has the biggest impact on me. I am used to see my dad who is a cardiologist working on his own development and expanding his knowledge in many fields. We have a family tradition to read a science book every month and later discuss some of its points together. I find such kind of pastime to be truly useful and…

Mrs.Childs promotes literacy in the classroom daily. She has a word wall posted to help students remember how to spell certain words that are hard for them to remember. While the children play at centers most of the games require reading, writing or spelling of some sort. Guided reading programs are used in the classroom at centers, as well, at the computer center. The students listen to a book about animals being read and the program highlights the word that the recording is reading at that specific time. Children’s books are used across the curriculum to make sure students get the gist of what is being taught. One day the students went to the library and read a book and then they were asked questions about the book and the students hit the answers spot on, they told us the book was about “No matter how big your Christmas presents are what really matters is being around your family for the…
