Severn Cullis-Suzuki’s UN Speech
“If you don’t know how to fix it, please, stop breaking it.” These are the exact words of Severn Suzuki in her speech in the 1992 UN Plenary Session. It has been 21 years ago when she made this speech and yet it seems like nothing has been changed in our environment. There might be a slight improvement to what we now, but looking at the big picture, nothing really changed. It just got worse. People were amazed on how a young girl, during that time can make such an impact to the people, and I, was too amazed that her words are clear and true. People of our world should be able to see and listen carefully to what is inside of her speech, not only that it has made a standing ovation but her words can greatly affect the generations to come. Her exact words are still happening to our world, her exact words are still so true and full of emotions, her exact words can touch the minds of people who are governing our world. If you don’t know how to fix it, please, stop breaking it. Our government can’t fix the holes in our ozone layer, they can’t bring back an animal that is now extinct, and especially the can’t bring back a forest that was once grew where it is now a desert. We are all equal; we all share the same air, water soil – borders and the government will never change that. We, altogether should stand as one and act as one single world towards one single goal. It has been still a habit of making so much waste; we buy and throw away, buy and throw away. How come that some people has more than enough and yet still afraid of letting go some their wealth to those who in need of it the most. It was shockingly surprising on how emotional it can be, that a 12 year old, like Suzuki have already found out in Brazil when she encounter children living on the streets, told her, if only he was rich, he would give all the street children food, shelter, love and affection.
