STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM:
This research paper seeks to present and discuss the poverty in municipality of Tboli. More specifically, it answers the following questions:
1. What are the causes and effect of the small scale?
Some effects of mining on the environment 1. It destroys forest and wetlands. 2. It may mean that you have to cut down lots of trees just to get to the spot that has all the gold or iron ore. 3. Many mine require tailings dams to prevent waste being washed into the rivers. Unethical miners can dispense with the dams, to save costs, resulting in massive pollution downstream. In other cases, the tailings dam can overflow, and even breach, during periods of heavy rain. 4. Underground coal mining can require the removal of almost an entire layer of material deep under the surface. When the timber supports collapse, this can lead to subsidence. The subsidence can mean economic loss to people above or damage to natural areas. It can even cause cracks in river beds, leading to loss of river flow. 5. Some mining involves the inadvertent dispersal of heavy metals, such as lead, into the atmosphere. This can have serious health effects, including mental retardation in children. 6. Asbestos mining causes the dispersal of asbestos into the environment. This will cause deaths among local residents and workers, often several decades later.

2. What are the disadvantages of the small scale?
The advantages and disadvantages of mining can be determined based on facts uncovered by scientists and by personal opinions. One definite advantage is the fact that it brings in large amount of profits for the companies doing the mining. It also provides employment for people who are unemployed in the mining regions. Mining for gold, coal and other ores are valuable.

OBJECTIVES: 1. To define what is Small Scale.
2. To know what are the disadvantages and advantages of Small scale.

Coal mining, particularly surface mining, leads to large areas of land being temporarily disturbed. The mine workings collect and conduct water that is in contact with the widespread pyrite, a mineral that produces iron and sulfuric acid when exposed to air and water. In this lab, you will see first-hand the reasons why mine drainage can be harmful to the local drainage system if left untreated.…

Answer = Coal mining basically removes the coal from the ground which would hinder the Earth's ability to reduce its acidity as the charcoal helps raise and ultimately balance the planet's pH. The soil's pH greatly affects the way planet life ingests nutrients and flourishes, which allows humans to harness essential components from nature.…

Firstly, the Gahcho Kue mine is great for the economy as the mining industry provides $57 billion dollars to Canada’s GDP and Canada makes a lot of money trading mined goods, since 80% of all mined goods are exported. Also, De Beers donates $71 billion dollars/year towards taxes, therefore helping Canada economically. Socially, about 33 first nation’s communities have been affected by mining as the air and water is polluted. As well, since many animals are at risk of losing their habitat or going extinct, it affects the hunting that the first nations do for food and other uses. Lastly, the environment is threatened, since the Gahcho Kue mine is located near the Kennedy Lake, De Beers is planning on draining 870 hectares of water for mining, affecting the vegetation and ecosystems living in the lake. On top of that, the caribou migration is affected as a winter access road system is being built, making caribou vulnerable to accidents and other accidents, which can eventually lead to their extinction. In conclusion, the Gahcho Kue mine will help the economy, but will have negative impacts socially and…

This contaminates a whole community’s supply of water. In a study that was released in 2011, it showed that Appalachia communities had an increased rate of birth defects (Ahren, crmw.org). A lot more health issues began to become present as time went on. It’s been proven that people living near mountaintop removal sites have cancer rates of 14.4% compared to the 9.4% for people who live elsewhere in Appalachia (Hendryx, crmw.org). Due to the mountaintop being removed with explosives, air near the areas becomes contaminated due to the coal dust and other dirt entering the atmosphere and being breathed…

The Upper Big Branch Mine disaster occurred on April 5th, 2010, in Raleigh County, West Virginia. The mine was located in Montcoal and owned by Massey Energy, but bought out by Alpha Natural Resources in 2011. Twenty-Nine of the thirty one miners at the site were killed by the explosion. A state funded independent investigation would later find Massey Energy directly responsible for the accident. (www.sourcewatch.org) The explosion was ignited by high methane levels being a contributed factor. You have to ventilate the air in the coal mines so methane levels do not get high and cause an accident. The miners failed to do so, and they paid for it. They also did not rock dust, you have to rock dust the coal mines so you can see and help ventilate…

Although there are a lot of safety equipment for mine, but still not safe. For example, Hayes, workers in uranium mines, has suffered from persistent skin problems. He falls into the uranium mill and trying to reached the safety line but he got grabbed nothing because the previous worker forgot to secure it (Scientific American, 2010). Uranium mining might cause health risk for people and might contaminate the surface water, groundwater and soil. As stated by International Atomic Energy Agency (2005), radiological risk in the mine can cause disease such as lung cancer and bone cancer. For example, in the article "The Dangers of Uranium" it is stated that, 70% of lung cancer deaths occur in non-smoker miners because of exposure from radon (cited from Martinez, 2015) and another example is according to the Institute for Energy and Environmental Research (2011), many Native Americans have died from lung cancer as they work in uranium mining. Workers may be exposed to internal radiation from radioactive elements by consuming dust containing radioactive elements, such as eating food with dust-covered hands or by inhaling dust (JBC against Uranium, n.d). The other risk is uranium mining can affect the drinking water supply and the recreational use. As stated in Scientific American (2010), Evers said that nuclear power is not clean. It is devastating to the water, environment, and…
