Re - Unanswered Prayers
Explain why unanswered prayers may lead some people to become atheists

Definition of prayer – and attempt to contact God, usually through words.

Some people claim that when they pray, they can feel God’s presence, and that he is listening. These people are usually Christians.
However, other people say that when they pray in church and at home, they cannot feel God’s presence. This can sometimes make them feel like they are doing something wrong, such as they are not praying correctly, or just that God simply does not exist, so there is no God to listen to the prayers.
This may lead them to ask for advice from people who are strong and faithful Christians, and try harder when they are praying. However, if they still don’t feel the presence of God when praying, they may begin to question the actual existence of God. This can sometimes lead to agnosticism or atheism.

Another reason that may lead people to believe that there is no God; are unanswered prayers.
Christians believe that God answers their prayers, and loves and cares for everyone. In church, they may be given examples of answered prayers. For example; many Catholic Christians believe that St Jude is the patron saint for those who have no other hope of help.
However, when some people pray, their prayers are not answered and they may begin the wonder about a God who answers some people’s prayers, but not others. For example; a young missionary couple asked the members of their church to pray that they would have a safe journey to their new posting in Nepal. However, the plane crashed killing them and their three young children.
Examples like this may make people ask why God answers only some peoples prayers, and not everyone’s prayers. They may come to the conclusion that God is in fact bad, and does not care for everyone on Earth. It might make them believe that God just can’t answer everyone’s prayers, as some prayers are selfish, and answering them would come with great consequences.

All throughout generations, humans have desired to know what to put their faith into when it appears that God is not there. To Louie Zamperini, he finds that if he does not put his trust in the Lord and does not ask to be saved, that he would surely be put to death. Through Laura Hillenbrand’s Unbroken, pastor Billy Graham displays how impactful God is through maintaining faith and how to live that life through Him: “What God asks of men, said Graham, is faith. His Invisibility is the truest test of that faith. To know who sees him, God makes himself unseen.” (Hillenbrand 190)…

“Lord please save my sister’s life. Please keep her safe even in the midst of her drunkenness and drugs. Jesus please keep her alive long enough to come to you for salvation.” I have been praying this for over 30 years and still I believe for her salvation. I am comforted by the knowledge that He hears my cries and has kept her alive thus far. In fact, last week she approached me about going to church again (she hasn’t gone since she was in middle school)!…

We all have had moments of tragedy and despair. It is in our darkest hour that many of us pray to God for comfort, I believe he answers our prayers when we are ready. We need to understand that asking God for material things will probably be ignored, that the greatest gifts we receive from God come from what we live and learn. For instance, my life was very difficult in many ways. I came from a home plagued by mental disease and addiction, it was a very lonely existence and I had often prayed for peace and to be loved unconditionally by another person. It did not seem like too much to want from life, however inside me grew resentment and anger. I was not ready to be loved or for a peaceful existence because I had not even loved myself. Over twenty years I lived my life angry at God for not giving me what seemed basic for most people and it consumed me to the point of near death. I saw what I had become, but now I had a child and I did not want her to feel the pain that I felt. If I did not change, it would just be repeating the vicious cycle. A very life altering decision was made and I began to heal from my past, but I still had a long journey ahead. I still felt lost and needed someone to understand. Finally I begged God to show me…

It should be acknowledged, however, that there is, of course, some persistence of this element, which can be demonstrated by the phenomenon of people praying; it is often the case that people pray for others and actually get a sense of helping from this. Wisdom chalks this up to there still being mystery surrounding how humans work. For example, one can never know what another human will do next so expecting a prayer to make a difference [to a person] is not so definite a thing as believing in its mechanical efficiency (185). Despite theists and atheists having difference views as to the facts of the world, this difference is not the kind that can be settled by an…

Second, God is at work answering everyone’s prayer. The Bible says in Isaiah 65, verse 24, "It will also come to pass that before they call, I will answer; and while they are still speaking, I will hear." God wants to hear your prayers. He is eager to hear our thoughts and request. He has a desire to have a relationship with His children. The Bible says in James 1, verse 17 that, “Every good thing bestowed and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation, or shifting shadow.” God loves us enough to hear our prayers and to help us when we need Him most. The apostle Paul reminds us in…

Prayer is being in the presence of God. It is being in the position where the ego is put aside, hope is elevated and requests are made. One admits his needs, accepts humility, and asks God for help. Prayer is having the opportunity to be in touch with God being able to confess sins and touching the heart of God via his son, Jesus Christ our savior (Christian Apologetics & Research Ministry, 2011). When one prays, prayer is love, devotion, and a walk that allows one to participate daily to keep their thoughts positive (McMinn, 1996). Prayer is like a foundation, one need to pray for strength, understanding, help, peace, love, guidance and gratitude. When one prays, he is conversing with God, walking closer to him, talking and listening to him. One who believes can pray from his or her heart on anything that they want to talk to God about. Another reason to pray is because God told us to pray. Being obedient is a result of discipleship. In Luke 18:1 it states “then he spoke a parable to them, that men always ought to pray and not lose heart” (New King James Version). Ephesians 6:18 states “pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of…

Praying is a lovely thing but this won’t stop a genocide. Going out and protesting can, signing petitions can, actions can stop a genocide. Syrians have been praying the same God as you, the same God that spoke to Moses, that this massacre is put to a halt and that they can live peacefully as they once did. Why would God listen to your privileged prayers instead those of the victims? What makes you greater in Gods eyes than those who are suffering? God has left us, he is disappointed in us and how selfish we have…
